China Grove board meets to set public hearing on zoning

?CHINA GROVE — The town will have a called meeting Thursday to set a public hearing regarding a zoning change request on property formerly owned by Tuscarora Yarns.
The meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. at the China Grove fire station, 333 N. Main St.
The old mill office, which sits on half an acre at 404 N. Main St., was purchased by Jesse Link.
Link owns South End barber shop and has been working to move the shop from its current location on South Main Street, where it has been since 1948. Link has said the North Main site is the same size as his current shop but will provide customers easier access and more parking. It’s the parking and surrounding landscaping that seems to be causing some concern.
The parcel is zoned light industrial and Link is requesting it be rezoned to commercial business, which would exempt him from certain landscaping requirements.
In August, Link submitted a minor site plan to the planning board for a parking lot expansion. He revised his original plan to meet the minimum requirements of the unified development ordinance. The technical review committee approved the plan, which consisted of a concrete parking lot with a certain type of landscaping.
Link expressed his displeasure about the landscaping at an October planning board meeting, according to a town memo to the board. If the zoning changed, the landscaping requirements would also change.
The planning board approved the change at its November meeting.
