Erwin Middle School’s Howard Hurt won the Elks Hoop Shoot Regional title for boys 12-13 on Saturday in Charleston, W. Va.
Hurt, the N.C. state champ, was the first local ever to win the title for the region, which consists of N.C., Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and Washington, D.C.
Hurt made 23 of 25 from the foul line, then shot 5-for-5 to nip Maryland’s Ty Newman in a tiebreaker.
Hurt will compete as a regional champ in the nationals in Springfield, Ma., on April 20.
n Boyles, Hatley hot in sweep of Lions
MARS HILL — Catawba beat Mars Hill 14-7 and 3-1 in a SAC baseball doubleheader on Saturday.
Jeff Boyles homered to lead the Indians in the first game. Israel Morrow, Matt Smith and Boyles had three RBIs apiece as Catawba (16-10, 3-2) pounded out 14 hits.
Zach Snyder (4-1) picked up the mound win.
Brian Hatley (4-1) tossed a complete-game gem in the nightcap, fanning four and scattering seven hits.
Blair Reynolds and Matt Baker led the offense with two hits apiece.
Mars Hill fell to 13-10, 3-2.
Sunday’s game was rained out.
- Pfeiffer baseball drops pair to Lancers
Longwood swept Pfeiffer’s baseball team 5-2 and 9-7 in a CVAC doubleheader on Saturday.
In the first game, Chuck Martin homered for the Falcons and Jim Brown pitched well in relief.
In the nightcap, NCAA homer leader Mark Schleicher belted his 12th of the year for the Falcons.
Sunday’s game was rained out.
- Davie County shut down by Cougars
TAYLORSVILLE — Davie County suffered a 5-0 baseball loss at Alexander Central on Friday night.
The War Eagles (4-2), who beat AC 8-3 earlier this season, got only one hit.
- West Davidson shut out by Ledford
Ledford scored seven runs in the first inning and went on to rout West Davidson 12-0 in nonconference baseball on Saturday.
Ledford scored those seven first-inning runs on just one hit. West committed two errors and gave up six walks in that frame.
West (2-6) takes on YVC foe South Davidson on Tuesday.
- Davie softball gets first victory
OLIN — Davie County racked up its first softball win with an 8-1 nonconference rout of North Iredell on Friday.
Amanda Sink went 3-for-3 with five RBIs to lead the War Eagles. Brandi Sain had two hits and Brittany Holt added a triple.
Layne Grout pitched a three-hitter and fanned nine.
Allison Parsons had two hits for the Raiders.
Davie (1-2) plays West Rowan (4-1) on Tuesday.
