‘Meme’ Brown

MOORESVILLE — Armetta “Meme” Mize Brown, 75, of Farmplace Drive, died Friday (March 15, 2002) ar her residence.

Services: A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Oakwood Cemetery, Statesville, conducted by the Rev. Billy Honeycutt and the Rev. Sam Adams.

Visitation: 7 to 8:30 tonight at Cavin-Cook Funeral Home.

James L. Davis Sr.

LEXINGTON — James Luster Davis Sr., 92, of Graybriar Nursing and Retirement Center, Trinity, formerly of Lexington, died Saturday (March 16, 2002) at Graybriar Nursing Home after two months of declining health.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday at Davidson Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Bob Burns, the Rev. Curtis Herring and the Rev. Jason Bumgarner. Burial will be at Lexington City Cemetery.

Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m Monday at Davidson Funeral Home. Other times, the family will be at the home of daughter Ernestine Shoaf, 1737 Welcome-Bethesda Road.

Sarah Dillard Guine

BADIN — Sarah Dillard Guine, 77, of 901 Sherman St., died Friday (March 15, 2002) at NorthEast Medical Center.

Services: 2:30 p.m. Thursday at McDonald Chapel AME Zion Church, conducted by the Rev. Curtis Long, pastor. Burial will be at Oak View Cemetery, New London.

Visitation: The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service at the church and other times at the home.

Lois McCormack Hall

Lois McCormack Hall, 84, of South Main Street, Salisbury, died Friday (March 15, 2002) at Carillon Assisted Living of Salisbury after a brief illness.

Born July 16, 1917, in Rowan County, she was the daughter of the late Amos Alexander and Lessie Butler McCormack. She was educated in the Rowan County and Salisbury City Schools.

She was employed by Cone Mills as a spinner before retiring. Mrs. Hall was active at Stallings Memorial Baptist Church. She was active in the WMU and a member of the Young at Heart Senior Citizens. She was a founding member of the Rowan Doll Society.

Her husband, Harvey L. Hall, preceded her in death on August 22, 1988 and by and infant son on Jan. 16, 1946.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday at Summersett Memorial Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Robert Heard, minister of Stallings Memorial Baptist Church. Burial will be at Chestnut Hill Cemetery.

Visitation: 1 to 2 p.m. Monday before the service at Summersett Funeral Home.

Glenn W. Huffman

LEXINGTON — Glenn William Huffman, 46, of Shiloh Road, died Friday (March 15, 2002) at Lexington Memorial Hospital.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday at Reeds United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Gary Foster and the Rev. Kip McBride. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Visitation: One hour prior to the service at ReedsUnited Methodist Church Fellowship Hall. Other times, the family will be at the home.

Memorials: Donors Choice.

Lt. Col. Sidney Kersey

Retired Lt. Col. Sidney P. Kersey, 820 Klumac Road, formerly of Trinity Oaks, Salisbury, died Friday (March 15, 2002) at the Lutheran Home of Trinity Oaks.

Born in Dillon County, S.C., he was the son of the late John H. and Maggie Dew Kersey. He was educated in the Dilon County and Marlboro County, S.C., schools. He was a graduate of the Citadel and did post-graduate work at Appalachian State University and the University of South Carolina.

In a career of 30 years in the United States Army, Lt. Col. Kersey served in various capacities and locations including Iran, Korea, Germany and multiple state-side assignments. He was a member of the 95th Division during World War II.

He was awarded the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart and the Combat Infantry Badge. He earned four campaign stars for the European Theater.

He retired as a lieutenant colonel. from the Regular Army in 1965. After retiring from the Army, Lt. Col. Kersey taught high school math in public and private schools in South Carolina for 12 years. He retired from public school teaching in 1977.

He was a member of First Baptist Church o Chester, S.C.

His wife, Katherine Cuthbertson Kersey, preceded him in death on May 19, 1991.

Survivors include sons Rodney Kersey, Salisbury, and Sidney P. Kersey Jr., of Houston, Texas; brother Lewis Kersey, Columbia, S.C.; sister Sudie Addie, Colombia, S.C.; and four grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday at Summersett Memorial Chapel, conducted by Dr. Robert M. Lewis, minister of First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Clay Waldrip, minister of First Baptist Church of Chester, S.C., will conduct the graveside service. Military honors will be conducted by the Honor Guard from Ft. Jackson, S.C. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Evergreen Cemetery in Chester, SC.

Visitation: 7:30 to 9 p.m. Monday at Summersett Funeral Home.

LEXINGTON — Orianna Gabriel Link, 94, of Piedmont Center, formerly of Lexington and Hickory, died Saturday (March 16, 2002) at the Piedmont Center.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church Chapel, Lexington, conducted by the Rev. Tommy Wilson and the Rev. Sarah Snell. A graveside service will also be held at 4 p.m. Monday at Centerview Baptist Church Cemetery in Maiden.

Visitation: The family will receive friends at First Baptist Church following the service. Other times, they will be at the home of her daughter, Doris Ann Link Helvey.

Lillian Hazel Mauldin

LANDIS — Lillian Hazel Mauldin, 86, of 2255 Hwy. 153, died Friday (March 15, 2002) at NorthEast Medical Center.

Born Sept. 8, 1915, in Virginia, she was the daughter of the late James Adam and Mary Edna Bass Honeycutt. She was educated in the Cabarrus County Schools.

She worked in the weave room at Cannon Mills for 24 years.

She was a member of Miami Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William F. Mauldin, in 1967 after 37 years of marriage. Sons Charles, Larry and William Mauldin and daughter Faye Blake all preceded her in death also.

Survivors include sons Tony and Vernon Mauldin, both of China Grove; daughter Helen King, Huntersville; brother Robert Honeycutt, Charlotte; sisters Ola Troutman, Kannapolis, and Mae Honeycutt, Charlotte; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday at Linn Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove, conducted by the Rev. Glynn Dickens. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery.

Visitation: 7 to 9 tonight at Linn Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove.

LEXINGTON — Beverly Sue Wood Phillips, 52, of Popeye Lane, died Friday (March 15, 2002) at her residence.

Harriett Wilson Smith, 104

ALBEMARLE — Harriett Wilson Smith, 104, of 406 Summit Ave., died Friday (March 15, 2002) at Autumn Care Nursing Center, Biscoe.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday at Greater Mount Zion Ministries, conducted by the Bishop James T. Worthy, pastor. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Brian Douglas Smith

Brian Douglas Smith, 32, of 1105 Davis St., died Thursday (March 14, 2002) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born in Greenwood County, S.C., he was the son of Deborah K. Smith, of Charlotte, and the late Douglas Smith.

He graduated from Northwest Cabarrus High School in 1986. He attended ECPI and the Art Institute of Charlotte. He also attended Rowan Cabarrus Technical College.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his son, Aaron Lee Smith, Kannapolis and maternal grandmother, Peggy B. Keasler, Concord.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday at Hartsell Funeral Home, Concord, conducted by the Rev. Coy Privette.

Ruth Thomas Snyder

POLKTON — Ruth Thomas Snyder, 72, of Route 2, Box 144, died Friday (March 15, 2002) at Presbyterian Hospital.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday at Rocky Mount Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Wayne Hamilton. Burial will be at Rocky Mount Baptist Church Cemetery.

Elleanore Spiceland

Elleanore Inez Johnson Spiceland, 84, of Lutheran Home at Trinity Oaks, died Friday (March 15, 2002) at the nursing home. She had been in declining health for six months and seriously ill for four days.

Born June 5, 1917, in Flat River, Mo., Mrs. Spiceland was a daughter of the late Brooks and Hazel Lee Karsch Johnson.

Educated in Michigan and a graduate of River Rough High School, River Rough, Mich., she was a homemaker and attended Wesley Chapel Methodist Church, Misenheimer.

Her husband, James Roy Spiceland, died March 31, 1994.

Survivors include son James D. Spiceland, Salisbury; daughters Anne Ebner, Roseville, Minn., Joan Frankhouse, Longmont, Colo., and Deborah Spiceland, Gainesville, Fla.; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services: Memorial, 3 p.m. March 23, Wesley Chapel Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Robert Clanton, pastor. The body will be cremated, and burial will take place later at Michigan Memorial Gardens, Monroe, Mich. Lyerly Funeral Home is in charge.

Visitation: Following the memorial service.

Virgie Lee Wall

ASHEBORO — Virgie Lee Wall, 88, of Asheboro Health & Rehabilitation Center, died Saturday (March 16, 2002) at the center.

Born Feb. 8, 1914, in Johnson County, Mr. Wall was a son of the late Monty and Bessie Lee Faithcloth Wall.

He retired fromJordan Spinning Co. and was a Baptist.

He was preceded in death by his wife, CarrieLee Cates, whom he married in 1932, and son Bobby Wall.

Survivors include daughters Jean Wike and Agnes “Pinkey” Helton, both of Kannapolis; sons, the Rev. J.D. Wall, Archdale, Billy Wall, Goldsboro, and Thomas Wall, Denton; sister, Essie Ivey, Roanoke Rapids; 15 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Cumby Family Funeral Service, Archdale, conducted by the Rev. Grayson King and the Rev. J.D. Wall. Burial, Cedar Falls Baptist Church cemetery, near Asheboro.

Visitation: 6:30-8:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home and at other times at the home of son, the Rev. J.D. Wall, 4906 Westhaven Lane, Trinity.
