Everson’s grand slam sparks West

BY STAFF REPORTS
SALISBURY POST

MOUNT ULLA — Clay Everson’s grand slam keyed an eight-run fifth inning as West Rowan rallied past North Rowan 12-9 on Friday night.

North starter Brandon Doby carried an 8-2 lead into the bottom of the fifth, but walks and the failure to turn a double play set up a big inning for the Falcons (6-1), who plated all eight runs after there were two outs.

“We came out flat again and Doby was pitching a super ballgame,” said West coach Chris Cauble. “Before the fifth we had a heart-to-heart, got some intensity back and the guys answered the call.”

Especially Everson, who had been in an 0-for-10 slump. He actually had two hits in the fifth, as he started all the excitement with a single.

North (0-5) outhit the Falcons 14-8. Blake Nichelson, Jimbo Davis, Brett Mulkey, Ronnie King and Ranon Barber had two hits apiece for North. Davis homered, doubled and scored three runs.

Matt Morgan tripled and two runs scored for West. Justin Graham and Everson scored two runs apiece, while Bryan Graham and Ben Hampton knocked in two.

Paul Link was the winning pitcher. Daniel Cauble notched the save.

  • Wonder baseball loses to Mountaineers

KANNAPOLIS — A.L. Brown lost to Kings Mountain 6-3 in nonconference baseball on Friday night.

Five errors and a critical baserunning mistake in the seventh did in the Wonders (1-4) and pitcher Zach Ward.

John Graham, Ryan Petty and Brett Stirewalt had RBIs for the Wonders, who start 3A North Piedmont Conference play next week.

“We could’ve played easier teams before we started conference but that just gives you a false sense of security,” said A.L. Brown coach Empsy Thompson. “Hopefully, these tough games will get us ready.”

  • Green Dragons drop another tough one

West Davidson left the bases loaded twice and dropped a 5-3 nonconference baseball game to East Davidson on Friday.

Dustin Hobbs pitched well for the Green Dragons (2-5) but took the loss.

Michael Joyner went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI and Adam Self went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

“We’re starting to hit our stride,” said West coach Dale Barnes. “Tonight, we gave ourselves a chance to win against a real good team.”
