South Region notebook: Another surgery awaits Krzyzewski

BY BRET STRELOW
SALISBURY POST

GREENVILLE, S.C. —Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski had his left hip replaced in 1999, and another surgery awaits him this summer.

Krzyzewski has been seen walking around with a slight limp this week, and he will have the right hip replaced after the season ends.

“My right leg now is shorter than my left leg,” Krzyzewski said. “What happens with the hip, it disintegrates, bone-on-bone, and your leg ends up getting a little shorter.

“It’s not so much pain. I’m off-balance.”

FANTASY ISLAND:During Mike Brey’s eight seasons as a Duke assistant coach, the Blue Devils went to six Final Fours and won two national championships.

“It was a little bit like Fantasyland. There was a comfort zone at times,” Brey said. “I think after my fifth year I was ready to be a head coach, but you think, ‘Hey, life’s pretty good.’You can get spoiled — there’s no question about it.”

Brey, when asked what his duties as an assistant were, downplayed his importance to the Duke program.

“I think I was in charge of getting Mike’s Diet Cokes before practice,” he said.

RECRUITING PITCH:When Steve Wojciechowski was a player at Cardinal Gibbons High School in Maryland, Brey played a big role in bringing the point guard to Duke.

“He’s a terrific guy, a class guy, and a heck of a basketball coach,”Wojciechowski said. “No one I’ve ever met has had a bad word to say about him. Having first-hand knowledge of him, I can see why.”

n

TOO UNSELFISH:Kent State star guard Trevor Huffman will lead the 10th-seeded Golden Flashes’ into today’s second-round game against No. 2 seed Alabama following Duke’s contest.

The Golden Flashes and Blue Devils could possibly meet up in the regional final in Lexington, Ky., next weekend.

Huffman admires the way Duke plays, but he had trouble watching last night’s game against Winthrop.

“It was sick,”Huffman said.“It was fun to watch because of their unselfishness, but after awhile, you can’t watch any more unselfishness.”
