GRANITE QUARRY — East Rowan’s baseball team got only two hits but made them count in a 2-1 nonconference win over visiting Jay Robinson on Thursday at Staton Field.
Drew Davis hit a two-run homer in the first with Spencer Steedley aboard to account for both Mustang runs.
“I hit a hanging curveball,” said Davis, who yanked the mistake over the left-field fence.
The other hero for the Mustangs was lefty hurler Jacob Cooper, who shut down the Bulldogs with a complete-game effort. Robinson got its run in the sixth.
Tyler Poole produced the other East hit.
East is 4-1, but has struggled at the plate at times. This was its second win by a 2-1 score.
“We’ve all been putting too much pressure on ourselves because of the high expectations,” said Davis. “But we’re going to be fine.”
East hosts South Rowan in a big rematch today. The Raiders (4-2) won the first battle 8-7.
- Davie County keeps North Rowan winless
MOCKSVILLE — North Rowan’s tough start continued on Thursday evening with a 5-2 loss to Davie County at Rich Park.
North (0-4) outhit the War Eagles 6-4, but left 12 men on base and lost two more potential runs on baserunning mistakes.
North left the bases loaded in the seventh against Davie’s Andrew Daywalt, who had relieved starter and winner Cody Wright.
North starter Stephen Johnston threw well, but Davie (4-1) took advantage of walks, errors and wild pitches to plate enough runs to win.
“We’re just not hitting and we’re not going to beat good teams wasting 14 baserunners,” said North coach Bill Kesler. “Our hitters have been pressing with Aaron (Rimer) out, and he could be out another three weeks.”
Jacob Garner drove in two runs for the War Eagles.
North plays at West Rowan today.
