A major farmer in Rowan County, Frank Small is sold on conservation.
Small, of 1220 Lake Farm Road, is seeking re-election to the Board of Supervisors for the Rowan Soil and Water District.
A native of Rowan, Small graduated from North Carolina State University with degrees in mechanical and agricultural engineering.
After a few years in public jobs, Small returned to his grandfather’s farm in Rowan.
He now has the largest hog operation in the county and also raises crops on 1,000 acres.
As the county becomes more urban, Small believes conservation will become more important.
“As farmers leave, we will have to switch gears to more urban issues. We need to help them with conservation,” he said.
He also wants to get more people involved countywide in conservation and with the efforts of the LandTrust of Central North Carolina.
Although the Soil and Water Conservation District work is relatively low profile, Small said the job is important.
By seeking re-election, he wants to ensure a farmer’s perspective on the board.
Small and Ben Knox are both seeking re-election.
Edd Church, a former member, is also a candidate.
Filing for the board ends at noon on July 5.
