LANDIS — Students and teachers at Corriher-Lipe Middle School have a unique way of recognizing each other for good deeds.
It’s called the PACT (Positive Attitudes and Character Traits) Cafe, and it allows students and teachers to recognize each other for acts of good character.
When a student or teacher sees such an act at Corriher-Lipe, they can drop a PACT Cafe character coupon in the mailbox outside the guidance office.
Teacher Karen Peck Harris gave eighth-grader Kassie Watson a coupon this week after watching her help another student who had dropped all of her books in the hallway.
“Although the hallway was crowded with students, I noticed that Kassie was the only student who stopped to help the girl retrieve her items,” Harris said. “I was impressed by Kassie’s kindness and consideration ... even though she did not know a faculty member was right behind her.”
Three times each year, the school has a luncheon to recognize students and teachers who receive coupons.
The latest luncheon was held Thursday.
In the past three months, teachers and students have turned in about 300 coupons. Last year, people took the time to fill out about 100 coupons in that time period, according to Guidance Counselor Carol Shorter.
“It’s a way of recognizing good character,” said Shorter.
“It’s snowballing,” Shorter said. “It seems to be growing and improving.”
