Tickets for the West Rowan-Parkland basketball game are available at West Rowan High.
The 3A state championship game will be played at 9 p.m. on Saturday at the Dean Smith Center in Chapel Hill.
Tickets will be sold until 3 p.m. on Tuesday, until 4 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday and until 3:30 p.m. on Friday.
Pre-sale tickets are $7. They will be $8 at the gate. Regional champion T-shirts are on sale at the school for $10.
- West, North stars in nationals
West Rowan’s Sherina Steele and Mark Sturgis and North Rowan’s Andre Tillman and Terry Wood competed in the triple jump in the recent Nike Indoor Track National Championships.
Mt. Ulla’s Steele was ninth in the girls meet with an effort of 37 feet, 14 inches. She also finished 19th in the long jump.
Cleveland’s Sturgis was seventh in the boys meet with a personal best effort of
45-1012 in the triple jump. Sturgis’ effort was good for a new school record.
Tillman placed 10th in the triple jump with a leap of 45-1, while Wood was 14th at 44-312.
MOUNT ULLA — Brittany Harkey came up with three hits and Devon Williams pitched a five-hitter as West Rowan’s softball team knocked off East Lincoln 7-0 on Monday at home.
The Falcons (4-0) got two hits apiece from shortstop Lyndsey Gay and second baseman Stephanie
Athey.
- Intimidators to have audition
The Kannapolis Intimidators will hold auditions for anyone singing the national anthem at home games for the 2002 season.
- West jayvees roll over Davie
Bryan Aycoth pitched a two-hitter and had two hits to lead West Rowan to a
15-3 jayvee baseball win over Davie County on Monday.
Luke Overcash and Adam Taylor also had two hits for the Falcons (3-1).
- Pfeiffer baseball splits two
Pfeiffer’s baseball team defeated Shaw University 19-1 on Monday.
Robert Scott hit a three-run homer and Mark Schleicher had three hits.
Pfeiffer’s lost to Mt. Olive 6-2 on Sunday despite a spectacular relief pitching effort by Jim Brown.
- Southard player of the week
Catawba sophomore outfielder Spence Southard has been named SAC position player of the week.
Southard hit .679 for the week, helping Catawba win five of seven.
Southard drove in 10 runs and stole 11 bases, including five in one game with Limestone.
- Intimidators,Tribe to play
The Kannapolis Intimidators will play Catawba College in an exhibition baseball game at 6 p.m. at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium on April 2.
The game is set up to follow the annual Intimidators media day.
“It should be a fun and exciting experience for our players. Hopefully we can continue this in the future,” said Catawba coach Jim Gantt.
- North girls top West for title
North RowanMiddle’s girls basketball team won the Mid-South Tournament championship recently with a
44-43 win over West Middle.
Sheena Mashore’s free throw provided the game-winning points.
Sophila Hipps led the undefeated Mavericks, who also won the regular-season title, with 23 points. Shameaka Brown scored 13, Mashore seven and Sharlene Blakney two.
Courtney Sifford, Whitney Bost, Cornitha Miller, Rashida Bush and Keyona Lyles played great defense for the
Mavs.
Other team members include Jasmine Suber, Shamarka Lynch, Brandi Sims and Jessica
Heilig.
Coleton Boone won his first NCAAU state wrestling title over the weekend in Southern Pines.
Boone’s Wild Ponies teammate Josh Patch brought home his fifth consecutive title.
Other local medalists were Kaitlyn Leonard, who was third, and Chandler Johnson, Mike Robinson and Daniel Green, who finished fourth.
Craig Patch and Tim Pittman coach the Ponies.
- China Grove’s Voyles wins
Jimmy Voyles of China Grove won the Mini Stock race at Concord Motorsports Park on Sunday.
Billy Lemmons of Salisbury was fifth in the Limited Stock race, while China Grove’s Wes Filyaw was ninth.
- Catawba softball drops five
FLORENCE, S.C. — Catawba dropped five games against tough competition from the Peach Belt Conference at the Francis Marion Invitational over the weekend.
Catawba now stands at 10-12-1.
Catawba lost 10-2 to Kennesaw State; 10-1 to Armstrong Atlantic; 8-7 in nine innings to
USC-Aiken; 4-0 to Columbus State; and 5-0 to Francis Marion.
The Faith Jaycee Diamondbacks 11&under AAU/USSSA baseball team finished second in the USSSA Carolina Classic with a 2-1 record.
The Diamondbacks lost the championship game to the Winston-Salem Rangers 8-0. The locals beat the Roanoke Rippers 8-0 and the Carolina Angels
11-6 to reach the finals.
Kent Basinger and Billy Veal combined on a three-hit shutout of the Rippers. Alex Litaker had two hits and Nich Glass had a double.
Austin Shull doubled and Matthew Miller tripled in a comeback win over the Angels.
Other Diamondbacks are Ethan Fisher, Blain Doby, Ethan Austin, Bryce Corbett, Ian Hudson and Brandon Miller.
Coaches are Dale Litaker, David Miller, Rocky Corbett, Ken Fisher, Scott Shull and Greg
Basinger.
- Five in CCISAA all-star game
Salisbury Academy’s Mallory Gardner and Liza Fisher and Sacred Heart’s Virginia Ball, Renée Roberson and Emma Miller played in the Central Carolina Independent School Athletic Association East-West All-Star Game.
The West won the game 50-31.
Miller, Ball and Roberson scored four points each, while Fisher had three and Gardner two.
Warren Blythe scored three times to lead Southeast Middle to a 5-1 soccer victory over Knox on Monday.
Also scoring for Southeast were Logan Brooks and Allen DeBerry. Daniel Garwood scored for Knox.
Getting assists for Southeast were Blythe and DeBerry.
Registration for Salisbury YMCA soccer leagues lasts through March 25.
Leagues are for boys and girls in grades K-8. The cost for Y members is $28. It’s $55 for non-members.
The season begins the week of April 15 and ends around May 25.
