ALBEMARLE — Bertha “Bert” Hatley Blake, 89, 609 Coble Ave., died Saturday (March 9, 2002) at her home.
She was the sister of Betty H. “Dixie” Hill, New London.
Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Albemarle Wesleyan Church. The body will be placed in the church at 10:30. Burial, Herrins Grove Primitive Baptist Church cemetery, Mount Pleasant.

Sandra Herrin Canup
Sandra Kay Herrin Canup, 53, Salisbury, died Saturday (March 9, 2002) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after a period of declining health.
Born Nov. 14, 1948, in Stanly County, Mrs. Canup was a daughter of the late Ollie Smith and Vernon Herrin. She was educated in Stanly County schools, was a homemaker and member of Parkdale Baptist Church.
Survivors include husband Billy Ray Canup; daughter Vicky Phillips, Stanfield; brothers Larry Herrin, Midland, and David Herrin, Hemingway, S.C.; sisters Judy Preslar and Lois Barbee, both of Stanfield; half brother Carl Smith, Stanfield; and three grandchildren.
Services: 1:30 p.m. Tuesday graveside, Wildwood Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Billy Huffman, pastor of Parkdale Baptist Church, and the Rev. Steve
Holshouser, pastor of Calvary Baptist Tabernacle.

LEXINGTON — Dorthy Edwards Grubb, 83, 988 Robert Beck Road, died Saturday (March 9, 2002) at Lexington Memorial Hospital after six months of declining health.

Daniel John Krotchko
Daniel John Krotchko, 67, Salisbury, died Sunday (March 10, 2002) at his home.
Born June 17, 1934, in Mount Carmel, Pa., Mr. Krotchko was a son of the late John and Susan Katzara
Krotchko.
He graduated from Mount Carmel High School, attended Pennsylvania State University in State College and graduated from the University of Denver in Colorado with a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering.
He worked for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. and in the mid 1960s helped start Kern Roll Rubber. He was employed by Permaflex for 19 years and was general manager of the Salisbury plant when he retired in 1996.
A volunteer with Rowan County Habitat for Humanity, he was a member of the First United Methodist Church, where he served on the administrative board, was a member of the Sanctuary and Celebration choirs and taught adult Sunday school.
He was also a member of the National Slovak Society, where he served as a lodge treasurer, and had served in the U.S. Navy as part of the crew that operated the Nautilus, the first nuclear-powered submarine.
He was preceded in death by a son, David Krotchco.
Survivors include wife Virginia Fetterman Krotchko, whom he married June 17, 1959; sons Mark D. and Timothy D.
Krotchko, both of Salisbury; brother the Rev. David Krotchko, Linden, N.J.; sisters Lillian K.
Hopey, Mount Carmel, Pa., and Anna K. Martin, Linden, N.J.; and four grandchildren.

Sister Lucille Lyerly
Sister Lucille Lyerly, 91, Salisbury, died Saturday (March 9, 2002) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after a period of declining health.
Born Dec. 8, 1910, in Rowan County, Sister Lyerly was a daughter of the late Mary Trexler and John Calvin
Lyerly. She graduated from Granite Quarry High School, Catawba College and the Lutheran Deaconess Training School in Baltimore, Md.
She was a registered parliamentarian and served as parish deaconess for First Lutheran Church, Miamisburg, Ohio, First English Lutheran Church, Columbus, Ohio, St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, York, Pa., and Christ Lutheran Church, Roanoke, Va.
She later was employed with the Albemarle and Salisbury units of the N.C. Lutheran Homes.
She was a member of Christiana Lutheran Church, a member and teacher of the Jennie Thomas Sunday School Class and a member of Women of the
ELCA.
She also was a life member of the Auxiliary of the Lutheran Theological Seminary and was honored in July 2001 on the 65th anniversary of her consecration as a deaconess at a special service at the Salisbury Lutheran Home.
Survivors include brother the Rev. Dr. J. Wilford Lyerly, Mount Airy, and sister Katherine E.
Lyerly, Salisbury.

Ruth T. Trexler
Ruth T. Trexler, 91, Salisbury, died Saturday (March 9, 2002) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after a period of declining health.
Born Feb. 23, 1911, in Rowan County, Mrs. Trexler was a daughter of the late Fannie Ida Cauble and Charles Adam
Trexler. She was a 1929 graduate of Granite Quarry High School and N.C. State University.
She retired as a public school teacher.
She was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church and had been church secretary, treasurer, pianist and primary department superintendent. She taught the Young Ladies Sunday School Class, helped organize the Golden Age Sunday School Class and was a member of
WELCA.
Her husband, Claude Howard Trexler, died in 1992.
Survivors include daughter Joan Trexler Rusher, Salisbury; sisters Lucy Welch, Salisbury, and Elizabeth
Willmotte, Granite Quarry; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, conducted by the Revs. Doug and Lori Hefner, co-pastors. Burial, family plot in the church cemetery.

Helen L. Small
KANNAPOLIS — Helen Marlene Lumsden Small, 66, formerly of 2403 McGill St., and a resident of Five Oaks Nursing Home, died Sunday, (March 10, 2002) at NorthEast Medical Center after a lengthy battle with Multiple Sclerosis.
Born on June 3, 1935 in Salisbury, she was a daughter of the late Harold D. Lumsden and Myrade Barger
Lumsden.
Her husband, Jack Herman Small, a Church of God minister, died on Nov. 3, 1988.
She was an active member and vocalist for the Kannapolis Church of God on West A Street. Mrs. Small worked for Cannon Mills until diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 1991.
Survivors include: a brother, Roy Lumsden of Kannapolis; and a sister, Carol Corbett of Kannapolis; and several nieces and nephews.
Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Whitley’s Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastors. Sam Crisp, Doug Small and James Masters. Burial at West Lawn Memorial Park, China Grove.

Harvey G. Wagner
CHINA GROVE — Harvey Gayle Wagner, 70, of 707 Yost Road, Salisbury, died Saturday (March 9, 2002) at his home.
Born on Sept. 14, 1931 in Yadkin County, he was a son of the late late Lucy Chappell Wagner and Arthur C. Wagner.
A graduate of West Yadkin High School, he retired in 1988 as a senior mechanic for Martin Marietta after 25 years.
Mr. Wagner, known as the “ Old Goat,” enjoyed NASCAR racing and loved to visit race shops. A craftsman he enjoyed wood working.
Survivors include: his wife, Helen Reynolds Wagner; a son, Randy Wagner of Linwood; three daughters, Becky
Sifford, Rockwell, Suzanne Price, of Kannapolis; and Cindy Hinson, of Salisbury; two sisters, Dorothy Pate, of Hamptonville and Maggie Collins, of Fayetteville; and eight grandchildren.
