JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. — Catawba College dropped its South Atlantic Conference baseball opener 9-6 to host and 20th-ranked Carson-Newman on Saturday afternoon.
Carson-Newman improved to 16-6 overall, while Catawba fell to 13-6.
Israel Morrow, Blair Reynolds and Curt Motsinger had two hits each for the Tribe.
n North Middle boys take championship
North Rowan beat West Rowan 47-38 for the Mid-South Conference boys championship on Thursday.
The Mavericks (12-1) finally got over the hump against a group of Bulldogs (14-2) that had nipped them three times over the past two seasons.
North’s 1-2-2 zone gave West problems, said Bulldog coach Erich Epps, who lauded the victors.
“North had good scoring balance and played excellent defense,” said Epps. “It seemed like there were six of them on the court.”
Greg Kimber led the Mavs with 14 points. Lamonte Savage scored 11, while Curtis Blackwell and Mannue Flames added 10 each.
Bradley Reid scored 10 for West, while Wesley Turner and Ronnie Cuthbertson added six each.

Hornet baseball loses fifth straight
TROY — Salisbury’s baseball team fell to 0-5 with an 11-7 loss at West Montgomery on Friday.
Salisbury coach Scott Maddox said it was the same old story: too many walks issued and too many runners left on base.
The Hornets stranded 11 and left the bases full in the first and fifth.
Ryan Lesley led Salisbury’s offense with a two-run double. Matt Butler had two hits and scored twice and Daniel Wallace picked up two RBIs.
Adam Butler pitched well in a relief appearance.
Please not that the Salisbury-South game originally scheduled to be played at Salisbury on Monday has been moved to the South field.

Errors hurt Wonders in loss to Vikings
CONCORD— Central Cabarrus took advantage of two A.L. Brown errors and two walks to score five runs in the fourth inning and held on for a 6-4 nonconference baseball victory Friday.
Andrew Petty took the loss but also led the Wonders with two hits. John Graham starred and Zach Ward threw the final three innings.
The Wonders were hurt by an error at second base with the bases loaded that cleared the sacks.
A.L. Brown fell to 1-2.

North Moore defeated West Davidson 7-3 in YVC baseball on Friday night.
The Green Dragons fell to 1-4.
Dustin Hobbs was the losing pitcher.

Barnes’ slam leads Davie past Tabor
WINSTON-SALEM — Davie County’s baseball team defeated Mount Tabor 6-3 on Friday night.
Lonnie “Hammer”Barnes hit a grand slam and also picked up a save in relief of winner Cody Wright.
Andrew Daywalt led Davie’s offense with three hits. Josh Golding scored two runs, while McKenzie Willoughby had two hits.

Pfeiffer baseball splits with Mt. Olive
Pfeiffer divided a CVAC baseball doubleheader with Mt. Olive on Saturday.
Pfeiffer won 6-5 in the first game when Jamie Tucker scored in the bottom of the eleventh on a throwing error.
Pfeiffer (9-11, 2-5) lost the second game 5-4.
On Thursday, Mark Schleicher hit a grand slam as Pfeiffer’s baseball team beat St. Augustine’s 11-1.

Grafton Young has resigned as head men’s basketball Coach at Newberry. Young came to the SAC school in 1993 and was named athletic director in 1995.

Limestone lacrosse hammers Catawba
Catawba (2-2) scored six goals in the final 5:02 of the opening half and went on to defeat visiting Lees-McRae 15-7 in Deep South Conference men’s lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Frock Field.
Josh Maphis scored four Indian goals.
Catawba fell 19-6 to Limestone on Wednesday.

Roanoke sweeps Catawba softball
Roanoke College swept a softball doubleheader from host Catawba on Wednesday afternoon at Whitley Field.
The Maroons won by scores of 4-3 and 8-3 in six innings.
Catawba fell to 10-7-1.
South Rowan YMCA is taking registrations for its spring soccer program for boys and girls in grades K-8.
Registration runs until March 16. Practice starts on April 8, with games beginning on April 20.
Cost is $31 for members and $54 for non-members.

The Salisbury Parks & Recreation Department will hold its first of three softball clinics Sunday, March 10, at 5 p.m. for umpires interested in calling adult softball games.
The clinic will be held at Hall Gym. Umpires will be paid $15 per game.
All umpires must be USSSA certified.

Registration has been extended for girls coach-pitch (ages 8-10) and girls fast-pitch (ages 11-13) softball leagues sponsored by Salisbury Parks and Recreation.
Teams will play on Mondays and Thursdays (fast-pitch) and Tuesdays and Fridays (coach-pitch).
League play opens in April at the Salisbury Community Park and Athletic Complex.
Cost is $25 for city resident, $50 for non-residents.
