Martha Gobble Beck

Martha Gobble Beck, 81, of Salisbury, died Saturday (March 9, 2002) at Genesis Eldercare after several months of declining health.

Born June 20, 1920, in Rowan County, she was the daughter of the late Horace and Lena Eagle Gobble. She was a graduate of Woodleaf High School.

A homemaker, she was a member of First Baptist Church of Salisbury.

Survivors include Husband, Gilmer Carlton Beck, whom she married on March 24, 1940; daughter Sandra Kay B. Moose, Salisbury; brother Adam Gobble of Salisbury; and one granddaughter.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday at Summersett Memorial Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Tom Roberts. Burial will be at Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: 1 to 1:45 Monday at Summersett Funeral Home. Other times, the family will be at the residence.

Tom Burkhart

LEXINGTON — Clarence Hill “Tom” Burkhart, 86, of Brian Center of Lexington, formerly of Beck’s Church Road, died Friday (March 8, 2002) after six weeks of serious illness.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday at Beck’s United Church of Christ, conducted by the Rev. Ed Rawls, the Rev. Banks Shepherd and the Rev. Michael Greer. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Visitation: 6 to 8 tonight at Davidson Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel. Other times, the family will be at the home of son, Gary Burkhart, 1017 Beck’s Church Road.

William ‘Bud’ Miller

William Frank “Bud”Miller, 94, of Salisbury, died Friday (March 8, 2002) at Genesis Eldercare.

Born Aug. 26, 1907, in Iredell County, he was the son of the late William Marvin and Annie Childers Miller. He was educated in the Iredell County Schools.

A farmer and a trader, he was of the Methodist faith.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Janie Evalee Brown Miller, on Nov. 11, 1993.

Survivors include daughters Pegg M. Helms, Kannapolis, and Norma M. Agner, Salisbury; brother Everette Miller, Stanly; sisters Ann M. Bringle, Granite Quarry, and Viola M. Brown, Mooresville; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday at Powles Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Gil Werner, pastor of the Salisbury Seventh Day Adventist Church. Burial will be at Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: 5 to 7 tonight at Powles Funeral Home.

 

William ‘Bill’ Painther

William Alfred “Bill” Painther, 48, of 5755 Faith Road, Salisbury, died Friday (March 8, 2002) at his residence after three months of declining health.

Born Jan. 2, 1954, in Lexington, he was the son of the late Laurence Lee and Lena Belle Grubb Painther. He was a graduate of West Davidson High School.

A Correctional Officer at Piedmont Correctional Institute, he was a member of the Spencer Moose Lodge.

He was a member of Trinity Baptist Church.

Survivors include wife, Deborah Frick Painther; son William Brent Painther, Woodleaf; step-son J.P. Frick, Salisbury; step-daughter Shannon Frick, Salisbury; brothers Melvin Painther, Lexington, and Troy Painther, Salisbury; sisters Judy Furr and Patty Carter, both of Lexington.

Services: 2:30 p.m. Monday at Linn Honeycutt Funeral Home Chapel, China Grove, conducted by the Rev. Steve Holshouser. Burial will be at Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7 to 9 p.m. tonight at Linn Honeycutt Funeral Home.

George Thomas Smith

KANNAPOLIS — George Thomas Smith, 74, of 506 North Ridge Ave., died Friday (March 8, 2002) at his residence.

Born May 14, 1927, in Madison County, Ga., he was the son of the late William Bennie Smith and Corrie Bullcok Smith Hampton.

He was retired from Cannon Mills Co.’s bleachery department. After retirement, he was employed as a security guard with Freightliner, Cleveland. Mr. Smith was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

He was preceded in death by his brother, J.B. Smith.

Survivors include wife of 48 years, Louise Morrow Smith; son Glenn A. “Butch” Tomlin, of the home; daughters Sharon S. Vaughn, Concord, and Timisha S. Adams, Kannapolis; two grandchildren; and one grandchild.

Services: 6:30 tonight at Lane Street Church of God, conducted by the Rev. Wade Easom. Graveside rites will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 4 to 6:30 today at Lane Street Church of God.

Memorials: Hospice of Cabarrus County, PO Box 1235, Concord, NC 28026.

Ruth T. Trexler, of Salisbury, died Saturday (March 9, 2002) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Harvey Gayle Wagner

Harvey Gayle Wagner, 70, of 707 Yost Road, died Saturday (March 9, 2002) at his residence.

Linn Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove, is serving the Wagner family.
