Joe N. Jackson
Joe Nathan Jackson, 57, 1100 W. Fisher St., died Wednesday (March 6, 2002) at the home of a relative after declining health for several years.
Born April 18, 1944, in Chesterfield, S.C., he was son of the late Dessie Mae Burch Jackson and Arthur James Jackson Sr. He graduated from Dunbar High School and also attended Livingstone College.
Mr. Jackson worked for Fiber Industries as a production operator. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and previously attended Jerusalem Baptist Church.
Survivors include brothers Gene D. Burch, Newy York, N.Y., and Arthur James Jackson Jr. of Tennessee; sisters Barbara Johnson, Lexington, Gelina Camp, Gaffney, S.C., Gladys Alford, Winston-Salem, and Jessie Fox and Juanita Walker, both of Salisbury.
Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. David Bracken. Burial, Oakwood Cemetery, with military rites by Rowan County Veterans Council.

Curtis Lear
CONCORD — The funeral will be Sunday for Curtis “Wormy” June Lear, 75, 8100 Davidson Hwy., who died Thursday (March 7, 2002) at his home.
Born Nov. 15, 1926, in Richmond County, Mr. Lear, a son of the late William Franklin and Nancy Leona Lineberry Lear, retired from Cannon Mills.
A veteran of the U.S.Army, he was awarded the Combat Infantry badge, the U.N. Service and SBC medals, and four bronze stars. He was a member of Graybeards.
Survivors include daughter Shasta L. Hatley-Matthews, Concord; son Terrell Collins Lear, Kannapolis; sisters Mattie Liner, Chester, S.C., and Geraldine “Jerri” Alexander, Landis; brothers Bobby Lear, Kannapolis, William “Bud” Lear, Salisbury, Ted Lear, Moline, Kan., Wayne Lear, Landis, Jack Lear, Gastonia, and Harold Lear, Westminster, S.C.; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Services: Military graveside, 2 pm. Sunday, Carolina Memorial Park, conducted by DAV Chapter 27.

LEXINGTON — Joe Melvin Mitchell, 69, Old Highway West, died at 11:20 a.m. Thursday (March 7, 2002) at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem after a sudden illness.

Mabel B. Overcash
CHINA GROVE — The funeral will be Sunday for Mabel Bostian Overcash, 91, formerly of China Grove, who died Thursday (March 7, 2002) at Genesis Eldercare, Salisbury.
Born Dec. 12, 1910, in Rowan County, Mrs. Overcash was a daughter of the late William E. and Lula Roberts Bostian. She attended Farm Life School.
Retired from Cannon Mills, she was active in the Kannapolis Women of the Moose.
Her husband, James Lee Overcash, preceded her in death.
Survivors include sons Glenn Overcash, Salisbury, and Oscar Overcash, Wilmar, Minn.; daughter Pauline Glover, China Grove; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

CHINA GROVE — William Alfred “Bill” Painther, 48, died Friday (March 8, 2002)) at his residence after three months of declining health.

Myrtle B. Ritchie
KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Sunday for Myrtle Blackwelder Ritchie, 91, formerly of 310 William St., who died Thursday (March 7, 2002) at Salisbury’s Lutheran Home at Trinity Oaks.
Born May 22, 1910, in Cabarrus County, Mrs. Ritchie was a daughter of the late John Henderson and Cora Safrit Blackwelder. She was a homemaker.
An active member of Kimball Memorial Lutheran Church, she was involved in various phases of church activities throughout the years.
Her husband, W. Guy Ritchie, died Aug. 8, 1982.
Survivors include son Dr. William Craven “Bill” Ritchie, Tucker, Ga.; and two grandsons.

Dr. William Rock Jr.
KANNAPOLIS — Dr. William Alfred Rock Jr., 84, of 1466 Oakwood Ave. died Friday (March 8, 2002) at NorthEast Medical Center in Concord.
Born Aug. 29, 1917, in Winston-Salem, he was son of the late William Alfred Rock and Essie Lamley Rock.
A graduate of Duke Divinity School in 1944, Mr. Rock was appointed to and pastored many churches from 1944-84. Since 1984, he has been pastor emeritus of Bethpage United Methodist Church.
A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, Mr. Rock served as a chaplain.
He was preceded in death by a son, William A. “Billy” Rock III, and a daughter, Martha Jane Rock.
Survivors include his wife, Frances Lenora Morse Rock, whom he married June 10, 1945; a daughter, Louise Gardner, Concord; a sister, Emily Winfrey, Winston-Salem; three grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Bethpage United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Randy Foster. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.
Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Whitley’s Funeral Home. The family will make its headquarters other times at his daughter’s home, 2298 Helen Drive, Concord.

Caleb ‘June’ Stout Jr.
The funeral will be Monday for Caleb Cleophus “June” Stout Jr., 54, 817 W. Bank St., who died Wednesday (March 6, 2002) at Hefner VA Medical Center.
Born July 20, 1947, in Rowan County, he was son of Willie McCoy Stout and the late Caleb C. Stout Sr.
Mr. Stout graduated from J.C. Price High School and was a maintenance worker at Livingstone College. He was a U.S. Army veteran and member of Crown in Glory Lutheran Church.
Survivors, in addition to his mother, include brothers John Frank Stout and Norman Lee Stout, both of Salisbury; sisters Helen Burgess, Granite Quarry, Ruby Blackwell, Salisbury, and Elizabeth Curtis, Mitchelville, Md.
