Marvin Ray Bowman
Marvin Ray Bowman, 63, Salisbury, died Wednesday (March 6, 2002) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after a period of declining health.
Born July 16, 1938, in Idaho, Mr. Bowman was educated in the Idaho and Rowan County schools.
A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he served during the Korean War. He was employed with Daniels Construction.
The body will be cremated. No services will be held.

Ariel Corrinne Furr
ALBEMARLE — Ariel Corrinne Furr, 19, 712 Corbin St., died Thursday (March 7, 2002) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.
Born Feb. 16, 1983, in Albemarle, Miss Furr was a daughter of Sherrill Lee Furr, Rocky Mount, Mo., and Debbie Hinson Leslie, New London. She was a homemaker.
Survivors, in addition to her parents, include stepmother Katherine Furr, Richfield; stepfather Richard Luie Leslie, New London; daughter Trinidy Napier, New London; sisters Chanda Burleson Smith, Salisbury, and Emery Jade Carter, New London; brothers Dray Alexander Carter and Gaden Sawyer Burleson, both of New London; stepbrother Shannon D. Leslie, Albemarle; half brothers Zachery and Elliot
Furr, both of Richfield; and grandparents Bill and Joyce Hinson, Albemarle.

Lula Wyatt Goodman
Lula Wyatt Goodman, 88, Salisbury, died Thursday (March 7, 2002) at Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation.
Born Jan. 19, 1914, in Rowan County, Mrs. Goodman was a daughter of the late David Eli and Esther Frick Wyatt. She was a graduate of Salisbury High School and Pfeiffer College and received her master’s degree from Catawba College in 1940.
Early in her career as a teacher, she taught at Ponds School and Hamilton School, both one-room schools, where she taught students who were older than she was. Later, she taught at Morgan Elementary, Granite Quarry Elementary and Erwin Middle School. She retired after 39 years.
A member of First United Methodist Church, she was a former Sunday school teacher. She was treasurer of Rowan County ARC and was a member of NEA and NCEA teachers organizations.
A son, Larry W. Goodman, died Feb. 15, 2000.
Survivors include husband Roy Goodman, whom she married Aug. 22, 1940; brother Paul W. Wyatt, Albemarle, and Roy Wyatt, Richfield; and sister Mary W.
Cater,Conover.

Charles W. Hadley
BADIN — Charles William Hadley, 94, 2401 Wayne Memorial Drive, Goldsboro, formerly of Badin, died Thursday (March 7, 2002) at Britthaven of Goldsboro.
Born Oct. 16, 1907, in Charlotte, Mr. Hadley was a son of the late Zebulon Zachary and Elizabeth Davis Hadley. He retired as an owner of a men’s retail clothing store.
He was a Sunday school teacher at Badin Baptist Church for over 60 years.
A Gold Medal winner in the state Senior Olympics in horseshoe pitching, he was an active boxer up to age 75.
Survivors include a niece and a nephew.

CLAUDVILLE, Va. — Steve A. James, 54, 2181 Hatchers Chapel Road, died Thursday (March 7, 2002) at his home.
Born Nov. 28, 1947, in New Haven, Conn., Mr. James was a son of Alice M. James, Salisbury, N.C., and the late Arnold B. James. He graduated from Elon College and was the quality assurance manager at Kaba Ilco in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Survivors, in addition to his mother, include wife Jenny Sue James; daughter Beth James, High Point, N.C.; sons Brian James, Wilmington, N.C., Shane Manuel, Salisbury, N.C., and Judd Manuel, Kenai, Ark.; and brother Charles James, Salisbury, N.C.

MOCKSVILLE — Carroll Smith Johnstone, 94, North Main Street, died Friday (March 8, 2002) at her home.
Born Oct. 14, 1907, in Indianapolis, Ind., Mrs. Johnstone was a daughter of the late Harold Ogden and Elizabeth Carroll Smith. She was a graduate of Baldwin College, Stanton, Va.
A homemaker, she was a member of Mocksville First Presbyterian Church.
Her husband, Knox Johnstone, preceded her in death.
Survivors include son John Johnstone, Mocksville; daughter Carroll J. Crowell, Mocksville; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Archibald C. Rufty
Salisbury native Archibald Caldwell Rufty, 87, lawyer, judge, Democratic party leader and major shareholder in Food Lion, died Tuesday (March 5, 2002) at his home at 209 Canyon Drive, Las Vegas, Nev., where he has lived since June, 1989. He had been in poor health for two years.
Born June 27, 1914, he was the son of the late Henry Edward and Helen Rothrock
Rufty.
A 1931 graduate of Boyden, now Salisbury High School, he earned a degree in mathematics from Catawba College in 1935, was admitted to the bar in 1937 and graduated in 1938 from the University of North Carolina Law School at Chapel Hill.
He practiced law in Salisbury until he was drafted into the U.S. Army at the beginning of World War II. He rose to the rank of captain, serving from 1942 until 1945 in counter-intelligence work. Except for the three years in service, he practiced law in Salisbury until he moved to Las Vegas in 1989.
Rufty also served three terms as solicitor and two terms as judge of the Rowan County Court and was president of the Rowan Bar Association.
During those years he also became greatly interested in the stock market and became the largest individual stockholder of Food Lion, except for co-founder Ralph
Ketner, and served on its board.
He and his wife, Frances, are also known as benefactors in many areas of Salisbury and Rowan County life.
The Ruftys and Jim Hurley each donated $200,000 to the Rufty-Holmes Senior Center and served on its first board. The Ruftys also donated the Helen Rothrock Rufty Picnic Shelter, gave generously to Horizons Unlimited and have been continuing supporters of Catawba College.
Active for many years in the organization and work of the Democratic Party, he served as chairman and took a leading role in alumni affairs of Catawba College and Salisbury’s civic life.
President of the Catawba Alumni Chapter in Salisbury-Rowan, he was on the committee which drew up the by-laws for the Catawba Chiefs athletic support organization and was a member of the Chiefs board of directors.
He was president of the Salisbury Lions Club, a member of the Samuel C. Hart Post of the American Legion, a director of the Salisbury Jaycees, a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and president of the Lutheran Brotherhood and the James L. Fisher Bible Class.
After moving to Nevada, he became a member of Good Samaritan Lutheran Church in Las Vegas.
His first wife, Betsy Ross, died in 1953, and their oldest son, Joe Hearne Rufty, was killed in Vietnam in January 1970.
He is survived by his wife, Frances Fulk Rufty, whom he married April 16, 1955; sons Bruce Ross Rufty of Salisbury and Archibald Rufty Jr. of Las Vegas; daughter Frances Rufty Parkton, Las Vegas; and six grandchildren.
Services: A memorial services was held at 11:30 this morning at Shadow Hills Baptist Church in Las Vegas. A second service will take place in Salisbury later in the spring. His ashes will be buried in the family plot at Chestnut Hill Cemetery.
