Sports briefs: East baseball team survives close call against Mount Pleasant

BY STAFF REPORTS
SALISBURY POST

GRANITE QUARRY — East Rowan got fine pitching from Julian Sides and Jason Cauble to beat Mount Pleasant 2-1 in non-league baseball played Tuesday at Staton Field.

Sides worked five innings for the win, while Jason Cauble pitched two hitless innings for the save as East improved to 3-0. The Mustangs have allowed only three runs in three games.

Cal Hayes Jr. drove in Brent Jones for East’s first run and scored on a hit by Drew Davis for the second tally.

Michael Gegorek’s sac bunt and Spencer Steedley’s fly ball to right helped moved the runners around.

“We’re not swinging the bats right now, but good pitching and good defense always keep you in the game and give you a chance,” said East coach Derry Steedley. “All our pitchers are doing a great job. We played errorless ball and (third baseman) Bobby Parnell and (shortstop) Cal made some great defensive plays.”

East plays at South Rowan on Friday.

  • Salisbury loses to Concord in seventh

CONCORD — Concord scored a run in the bottom of the seventh for an 8-7 non-league win over Salisbury on Tuesday.

The winning run scored after two hits, a balk and a passed ball.

The Hornets (0-3) dug a 6-0 hole by issuing six early walks, then bounced back after Todd Utech took the mound in the second inning and pitched well the rest of the way.

Matt Butler and RyanLesley had two RBIs apiece for the Hornets, while Daniel Wallace and Tommy Ludwig had two hits each.

The win gave the Spiders (3-2) a sweep of the Hornets.

Salisbury plays at West Rowan on Thursday.

  • Davie opens with victory over Cougars

MOCKSVILLE — Strong pitching by Lonnie “Hammer” Barnes and a three-run double by McKenzie Willoughby led Davie County to an 8-3 season-opening win over Alexander Central on Tuesday.

Barnes worked six innings and allowed five hits. Cody Wright finished up.

Willoughby drove in five runs to lead a 12-hit War Eagle attack. Josh Golding went 3-for-3 with three runs and Andrew Daywalt went 2-for-3 with a double.

Davie visits North Rowan today.

  • Same old Storey for West Davidson

Central Davidson’s Russ Storey baffled West Davidson for the second time this season, tossing a one-hitter and fanning 16 batters.

Earlier this season, Storey pitched a no-hitter against the Green Dragons (1-2) and fanned 15.

Dustin Hobbs got the only hit for West and was the hard-luck loser on the mound.

West, thankfully through with Storey for this season, takes on Ledford on Monday.
