Verney Meeler Barrier
The funeral is today for Verney Meeler Barrier, 102, formerly of Salisbury, who died Monday (March 4, 2002) at Evergreen Health Care, Greensboro, after two years of declining health.
Born June 25, 1899, in South Boston, Va., Mrs. Barrier was a daughter of the late John Russell and Martha Katherine Adams Meeler. She was educated in the South Boston, Va., schools, Longwood College, Virginia, and High Point College, High Point.
A retired teacher, she taught for 30 years in the Liberty, Farmer and Winston-Salem schools. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Greensboro, and a former member of Milford Hills United Methodist Church.
Her husband, John Franklin Barrier, died Feb. 21, 1979. A daughter, Dorothy Barrier Greene, also preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughters Katherine B. Bondurant, Conover, and Louise Barrier,Greensboro; brother Clyde Meeler, South Boston, Va.; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services: Graveside, 1 today, Rowan Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. Neill Shaw, pastor, Milford Hills United Methodist Church.
Visitation: At the cemetery after the service.

Willie ‘Wootie’ Blake
The funeral will be Friday for Willie James “Wootie” Blake, 57, 1025 Grady St., who died Sunday (March 3, 2002) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after three weeks of serious illness.
Born April 20, 1944, in Salisbury, Mr. Blake, a son of Lawrence Crockett and the late Ethel Blake Saunders, attended J.C. Price High School.
He was a member of Hall’s Chapel Primitive Baptist Church and was a Mason. Employed by Livingstone College, he was physical director for the physical plant.
Survivors, in addition to his father, include wife Frances Eberhart Blake; sons Willie J. Blake Jr., and Theodore and Jermail Blake, all of Salisbury; daughter Latesha Daniels, Atlanta, Ga.; sisters Linda Morganton and Asalee Bruce Sanders, both of Cary; half sisters Nicole and Songi Crockett, both of Charlotte; and three grandchildren.
Services: 1 p.m. Friday, Livingstone College, Varick Auditorium, conducted by Elder Richard Johnson. Burial, Oakwood Cemetery.
Visitation: 12 p.m. Friday at the college.

Carol H. Gilman
EUGENE, Ore. — Carol H. Gilman, 73, Eugene, died Saturday (March 2, 2002).
Born March 30, 1928, in Chicago, Ill., Mrs. Gilman was a daughter of the late Boyd and Louisa Sanborn Hill. She was reared in Lake Forest, Ill., and attended Maryland College for Women.
She resided in Salisbury, N.C., from the mid 1950s until 1993, when she moved to Eugene. A homemaker, she was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Salisbury, N.C.
She married James W.P. Gilman in June 1949 in Chicago, Ill.
Survivors include children Lyn Gilman-Garrick, Eugene, Ore., James P. Gilman, Salisbury, N.C., Boyd H. Gilman, Boston, Mass., and W. Allen Gilman, Raleigh, N.C.; sister Joan H. Peck, Winnetka, Ill.; and three grandchildren.
The family will have a memorial service in the spring at Lake Forest, Ill.

Leila Wilson Howard
KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Thursday for Leila Mae Wilson Howard, 84, formerly of 304 Rogers Lake Road, who died Monday (March 4, 2002) at Brian Center, Hickory.
Born Oct. 8, 1917, in Iredell County, Mrs. Howard was a daughter of the late Charlie Lee and Effie Cumi Cagle Wilson. She was a graduate of Davidson High School.
In earlier years, she worked with F.W. Woolworth and Co. Later, she was employed with Barlow and Brown Supply Co. She retired from Mills Garden Center in 1982 after 40 years. She was a member of Shadybrook Baptist Church.
Her husband, Parks Colton Howard, died in 1978.
Survivors include daughter Rebecca Ann Howard Smith; sister Margaret Seaford, Kannapolis; brother Oni Wilson, Davidson; and two grandchildren.

KINGS MOUNTAIN — Nancy Hill Kerns, 88, White Oak Manor, died Monday (March 4, 2002) at White Oak Manor.
Born in Rowan County, Mrs. Kerns, a daughter of the late William Baxter and Julia Cope Hill, was a member of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church.
She was a former vice president of City Auto and Truck Parts and secretary/treasurer of Kerns Brothers.
Her husband, Clyde Wilmoth Kerns, preceded her in death.
Survivors include sons Johnny Kerns, Kings Mountain; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Born March 31, 1941, in Albemarle, Mr. Moore, a son of the late Arnold Terrell and Virginia Turner Moore, was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.
He operated Moore’s Hydraulic Sales and Service.

Born Dec. 11, 1921, in Landis, Ms. Murph, a daughter of the late Thomas O. and Kizzie Poole Murph, was educated in the Landis schools.
Prior to retirement, she was employed at Linn-Corriher Mills, Landis, and had also been a child care worker. She was a member of Memorial Baptist Church, Landis.

KANNAPOLIS — Mary Lee Medlin Nance, 84, formerly of 509 E. 10th St., who died Tuesday (March 5, 2002) at Salisbury Lutheran Home.
Born March 9, 1917, in Union County, Mrs. Nance was a daughter of the late Thomas Luther and Lena Taylor Medlin.
In 1979, she retired after 30 years from Cannon Mills Co. Plant 4, No. 1 spinning room. She was a member of Central Baptist Church.
Her husband,Walter Roseman Nance, died in 1992.

Mary Campbell Shoemaker, 90, Birmingham, Ala., died Monday (March 4, 2002) at her home.
Mrs. Shoemaker resided in Spencer for 50 years while her late husband, Ralph S. Shoemaker, was employed as a machinist with Southern Railroad. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Spencer, and Fidelis Sunday School Class.
