MOUNTULLA — West Rowan’s baseball team improved to 2-0 with an 18-4 romp over South Iredell on Monday afternoon.
Paul Link fanned five Vikings (1-2) for the win. Daniel Cauble finished up on the mound.
“For the second straight game, our young pitchers threw strikes, while the other team was walking a bunch,” said West coach Chris Cauble.
Ben Hampton homered to ignite the West offense. The senior drove a 1-0 fastball over the fence in dead center to start the scoring in the second inning.
“After that, everything fell into place for us,” said Cauble.
West went on to score seven in the third and seven more in the fourth to send fans home after five chilly innings.
West got offensive production from three sophomores — Patrick Adams (three RBIs), Chris McDaniel (two RBIs) and Seth Waller (two RBIs).
“The young guys grew some and it was good to see the older guys do a good job of leading,” said Cauble.
West plays at South Rowan (0-1) on Wednesday and hosts Salisbury(0-2) on Thursday.
- Runners brave cold for Hogs run at South
Despite a cold rain falling Saturday, 125 runners and walkers braved the elements for the fourth annual Ain’t Hogs Great 5K at South Rowan High School.
Chris Lamperski crossed the finish line first in a time of 16 minutes, 35 seconds. Diana Cushing was the top female runner in a time of 19:56.

- King, Heggins help CCC win tournament
Former South Rowan players Drew King and StephenHeggins scored 11 points apiece as Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute defeated Butler College (Pa.)107-49 in the District 7 championship game on Sunday.
Heggins also had seven assists in CCC&TI’s 81-68 semifinal win over Montgomery College (Md.) on Saturday.
The Cobras now head to Delhi, N.Y., with seven other teams for the Division III National Junior College championships.
- Pfeiffer athletes of the month named
Softball player Kristen McVerry and baseball player Mark Schleicher were Pfeiffer’s athletes of the month for February.
McVerry is batting .400.
Schleicher batted .603 with 10 homers for the month and set an NCAA record for consecutive hits with 12.
He is leading the NCAA (I and II) in homers.
- Catawba softball splits tourney games
Catawba split a pair of games at the Catawba Invitational Softball Tournament on Saturday and Sunday.
The Indians (8-5-1) fell to Kutztown 8-4 on Saturday and topped Queens (N.Y.), 12-4 on Sunday.
Jackie Carson had three hits and three RBIs to place the win over Queens. Megan Wilson (4-0) got the win.
- Pfeiffer baseball gets victory
Pfeiffer defeated University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown 14-6 in baseball on Monday.
Jordan Taylor and Ben Garland had three hits apiece for the Falcons (6-10).
- South Rowan team places fourth
The South Rowan Spartans 11&under AAU basketball team placed fourth in the King of Spring tournament.
The Spartans lost to the second-ranked Charlotte Monarchs 52-47 and by 38-24 to the Winston-SalemLakers.
After staving off elimination with a 51-20 win over the Piedmont Panthers, the Spartans’ third game of the day caught up with them in a 61-24 loss to the Charlotte Royals.
The Spartans play again at the 2002 Fastbreak Invitational on March 15-17.

Francis Marion’s 298 paced the field after the first day of the 18-team Rendleman Invitational Golf Tournament in Salisbury.
Pfeiffer (302) stands third after the first day with Catawba tied for sixth (311).
Pfeiffer’s Ben Case was tied for fourth individually with a 73. Pacing Catawba was Andrew Wymer with a 76.
