Verney Meeler Barrier, 102, formerly of Salisbury, died Monday (March 4, 2002) at Evergreen Nursing Center, Greensboro.

Mollie Cain Brown, 90, 209 W. 11th St., died Monday (March 4, 2002) at the home of a son, after a period of declining health.

MOORESVILLE — James “Jim” Edward Cashion, 83, Malibu Road, died Sunday (March 3, 2002) after a lengthy illness.

Services: Memorial, 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Central United Methodist Church.

Visitation: At the church after the service.

Helen Briggs Dunn

LEXINGTON — Helen Briggs Dunn, 79, Greensboro Street Extension, died Sunday (March 3, 2002)at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center,Winston-Salem.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Wesley Heights United Methodist Church. Burial, Forest Hill Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight,Davidson Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home on Greensboro Street Extension.

Kyongmi Choe Flagg

Kyongmi Choe Flagg, 34, Salisbury, died Monday (March 4, 2002) at her home.

Richard Harris

RICHFIELD — Richard Harris, 51, of 202 Floyd Street, died Sunday (March 3, 2002) at NorthEast Medical Center.

Born Dec. 31, 1950 in Stanly County, he was the son of Gertrude Sloan Harris and the late Van Junior Harris. He was educated in the Stanly County public schools.

He was a former employee in the construction field. He was a member of First Baptist Church of New London.

Survivors include wife, S. Francine Crump Harris, Albemarle; twin brother Ronald Harris, Salisbury, and brother Larry S. Harris, Salisbury; and sisters Patricia H. Stanback, Clarksville, Tenn., Joreane Little and Pamela Little and Denise Bailey, all of Richfield.

Services: 3 p.m. Wednesday at Parker’s Grove Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Roger WIlliams, pastor.

Visitation: The family will be at the church 30 minutes prior to the service.

Phillip E. Hege

LEXINGTON — Phillip Eldridge Hege, 79, Ridge Road, died Sunday (March 3, 2002) at Brian Center of Lexington after a month of serious illness.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Pilgrim Reformed United Church of Christ. Burial, church cemetery. Military rites by VFWPost 3074.

Visitation:6-8 tonight, Davidson Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home on Ridge Road.

Ray Hogue

The funeral will be Saturday for Ray Hogue, 71, Detroit, Mich., who died Saturday (March 2, 2002) at his home after several years of declining health.

Born March 14, 1930, in Rowan County, N.C., Mr. Hogue, a son of the late Vernon and Nancy Hogue, was educated in the Rowan County schools.

He relocated to Pittsburgh, Pa., where he worked as a constable. Later, a resident of Detroit, he retired from a beer distributor.

Survivors include wife Geraldine Hogue; sons Felton and Anthony C. Gordon, both of Detroit; daughters Ann Benton, Georgia, Sophia Garf, Linda Hogue, Maryette Gordon and the Rev. Regina Yancey, all of Detroit; brothers Van and James Hogue, Ohio, Ozzie Hogue, Cleveland, N.C., and Willie Hogue, Florida; sisters Robenia Barnett and Pauline Copeland, both of Florida; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Services will be held in Detroit on Saturday at Swanson Funeral Home.

Jean Lee Holloway

Jean Lee Holloway, of Salisbury, died Sunday (March 3, 2002) at Kindred Hospital, Greensboro, after a period of declining health.

Born in Iredell County to the late David Earl and Bessie Watts Lee, she was educated in the Iredell County Schools.

Employed with Linn-Corriher Mills, she was a member of Community Baptist Church.

Survivors include daughter Norma Darlene Holloway Brown, Mooresville; brothers David E. Lee Jr., Florida, James E. Lee and Harold L. Lee, both of Salisbury; sister Linda Sue Lee Brady, Salisbury; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday at Rowan Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Randy Crowell, pastor of West Cornith Baptist Church, Mooresville. Burial will be at Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday morning, at Lyerly Funeral Home.

Iris Bailey Hughes

GRANITE QUARRY — Iris Bailey Hughes, 73, formerly of Granite Quarry, died Monday (March 4, 2002) at Genesis ElderCare of Salisbury.

‘Dot’ Jenkins

LEXINGTON — Lelia Dorothea “Dot” Warner Jenkins, 84, Van Dyke Road, Dillon, S.C., formerly of Lexington, died Monday (March 4, 2002) at Regency Hospital, Florence, S.C., after six months of illness.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Lula M. Leonard

LEXINGTON —The funeral was today for Lula Money Leonard, 91, Brian Center Nursing Home, formerly of Hames Street, who died Sunday (March 3, 2002) at Lexington Memorial Hospital after two years of declining health.

The family received friends from 10-11 this morning at Davidson Funeral Home. Services were held at 11 this morning at the funeral home chapel. Burial was at Forest Hill Memorial Park.

The family is at the home of son Charlie Leonard, 503 Westside Drive.

 

Nell M. Owensby

The funeral will be Wednesday for Nell McNeely Owensby, 87, 309 First St., who died Sunday (March 3, 2002) at the home of daughter Gwen McNeely in Charleston, S.C.

Born Aug. 21, 1914, in Cherryville, Mrs. Owensby was a daughter of the late Sam and Nellie Maye Maxwell McNeely. She was educated at Farm Life School and a graduate of Appalachian State Teachers College, Boone.

A first grade teacher, she retired from Kannapolis City Schools. She was a member of First Baptist Church and the church choir.

Her husband, Ross Owensby, died in 1969; and a son, Sam Owensby, died in 1976.

Survivors, in addition to her daughter, include other son Steve Owensby, China Grove; other daughters Suzanne Hudson, Greensboro, Ga., Gwen McNeely, Charleston, S.C., and Kathy Belleman, China Grove; brother John McNeely, Boone; sister Eloise Howard,Aiken, S.C.; and five grandchildren.

Services: 1 p.m. Wednesday,First Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Steve Wilson and the Rev. Mike Long. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home,China Grove. At other times the family will be at the home on West First Street.

LEXINGTON — Alba Fe Carracedo Skipas, 83, MillstreamLane, died Sunday (March 3, 2002) at Centerclaire Nursing Home after several months of declining health.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday, Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church. Burial,Forest Hill Memorial Park.

Visitation: The family will receive friends at the home of daughter Marie DeHombre, Millstream Lane.

Joseph J. Spandel

The funeral will be Wednesday for Joseph James Spandel, 71, Salisbury, who died Sunday (March 3, 2002) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after six months of declining health and two weeks of serious illness.

Born Nov. 2, 1930, in Minneapolis, Minn., Mr. Spandel, a son of the late Inez Spandel, was educated in the Brainerd, Minn., schools.

He retired after 21 years from the U.S. Navy. Later, he retired after 25 years from Lyon Shaw, now Woodard. He was a member of Harold B. Jarrett American Legion Post and AMVETS.

Survivors include wife Ann Loflin Spandel, whom he married May 24, 1994; stepdaughters Cheryl B. Morgan, Charlotte, and Chrystal B. Jenkins, Salisbury; and five grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Wednesday, National Cemetery, Statesville Blvd., Salisbury, conducted by the Rev. James Cook, chaplain, Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Lyerly Funeral Home.

Ida M. Torrence, 94, of Heritage Plantation Rest Home, died Saturday (March 2, 2002) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

ALBEMARLE — Gilbert Vigil, 70, 526 Eastwood Drive, died Sunday (Feb. 24, 2002) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.

ALBEMARLE — The funeral will be Wednesday for Nealie Ann Rummage Waisner, 86, of Albemarle, who died Monday (March 4, 2002) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.

Service: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Union Grove Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Jerry Mabry and the Rev. Lee Church. Burial will be at Union Grove Baptist Church cemetery.

Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. tonight at Hartsell Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the home of son Dwain Waisner, 24240 Hwy. 138, Albemarle.

 

Lucy Ervin Walker

MOORESVILLE — Lucy Mae Ervin Walker, 83, East Mills Avenue, died Sunday (March 3, 2002) at Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Cavin-Cook Funeral Home chapel. Burial,Glenwood Memorial Park.

Visitation: 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Frances C. Weaver

CHINA GROVE — Frances Casper Weaver, 77, formerly of 1755 N. Main St., died Monday (March 4, 2002) at Brian Center.

Born Nov. 6, 1924, in Rowan County, Mrs. Weaver, a daughter of the late William and Mary Goodnight Casper, was educated in the Rowan County schools. She was a homemaker.

A member of Grace Bible Church, she was a former member of Mount Zion United Church of Christ, where she was active in church work.

Her husband, Robert Edward Weaver, died July 31, 2000, and a son, Robert “Eddie” E. Weaver, died April 25, 1993.

Survivors include brother William C. Casper, Aiken, S.C..

Services: 3 p.m. Wednesday, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home chapel, China Grove, conducted by the Rev. Alan Misenheimer. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park.

Visitation: 2-3 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

  • The March 2 obituary for Stahle Linn Jr. misidentified his sister, Mary Anne Woodson of Salisbury. He was a graduate of Woodberry Forest School, which was also incorrect.
