Walter P. Burris

ALBEMARLE — Walter Petticord Burris, 87, 33420 Old Salisbury Road, died Wednesday (Feb. 27, 2002) at Britthaven of Piedmont.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Hartsell Funeral Home chapel. Burial, Pleasant Grove Baptist Church cemetery, Oakboro.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of son Marvin Burris, 611 Knollwood Circle.

Memorials: Alzheimer’s Association, Southern Piedmont Chapter, 3420 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, NC 28215-3298.

 

Ozell Kiser Freeman

The funeral will be Saturday for Ozell Kiser Freeman, longtime fourth-grade teacher and author of “History of N.C. ... The Goodliest Land,” a book that was accredited by the state for accelerated students.

A resident of Lutheran Home at Trinity Oaks, she died Wednesday (Feb. 27, 2002) at the nursing center.

Born June 30, 1910, in Kings Mountain, Mrs. Freeman was a daughter of the late Larkin A. and Lorena Jeanette Williams Kiser. She was a graduate of Lenoir-Rhyne College, where she was named Lenoir-Rhyne College Alumna of the Year in 1975.

A teacher for 38 years, she taught at Wiley School for 28 years.

She was a member of the Haven Lutheran Church Choir and the Walt Wagoner Sunday School Class, Delta Kappa Gamma, the North Carolina Association of Educators, the National Education Association and the Salisbury Woman’s Club.

Her husband, Glenn D. Freeman, died March 18, 1991.

There are no immediate survivors.

Services: 11 a.m., Saturday, Haven Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Ron Fink. Burial, Mount Vernon Baptist Church cemetery,Rutherfordton.

Visitation: 6-7:30 tonight, Summersett Funeral Home.

Lois H. Haden

The funeral will be Monday for Lois Hoffman Haden, 80, 819 Crane Creek Road, who died Wednesday (Feb. 27, 2002) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born Jan. 26, 1922, in Rowan County, Mrs. Haden was a daughter of the late George Monroe and Fannie Lou Wilhelm Hoffman. A homemaker, she was a member of Second Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include husband James Edward Haden; daughter Barbara Haden Reavis, Kannapolis; sister Grace Hoffman Talbert, Chattanooga, Tenn.; brother Raymond Hoffman, Charlotte; and one grandson.

Services: Service, 1 p.m. Monday, National Cemetery at Hefner VA Medical Center, Salisbury, conducted by Dr. Dan Thornton.

Visitation: 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Lady’s Funeral Home,Kannapolis.

Rellie E. Huneycutt

ALBEMARLE — Rellie Eudy Huneycutt, 84, 33426 Old Salisbury Road, died Thursday (Feb. 28, 2002) at Britthaven of Piedmont Nursing Home.

‘Hoot’ Johnston

MOORESVILLE — Houston Lafayette “Hoot” Johnston, 75, East Center Avenue, died Thursday (Feb. 28, 2002) at his home.

Georgia P. Lash

The funeral will be Saturday for Georgia P. Lash, 89, 526 W. Monroe St., who died Tuesday (Feb. 26, 2002) at her home.

Born April 21, 1912, in Georgetown, S.C., Mrs. Lash was a daughter of the late Daniel Lewis and Lucinda Steward Poinsette. She was educated in the Georgetown, S.C., schools and graduated from Howard High School.

She received a bachelors of home economics from South Carolina State College, Orangeburg; a master’s degree from Teachers College, Columbia University; and attended Morehouse and Spelman Colleges. A Fulbright Grant recipient, she spent a year in Baghdad, Iraq, at Queen Aliyah College.

She was a member of Crown In Glory Lutheran Church.

Her husband, Wiley L. Lash, was a former mayor of Salisbury.

Survivors include daughters Dr. Adrienne Jones, Cleveland, Ohio, and Elaine Sutton, Xenia,Ohio; stepson the Very Rev. Wilbur N. Thomas, Asheville; seven stepgrandchildren; and 14 stepgreat-grandchildren.

Services: 11:30 a.m., Saturday, Crown In Glory Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Donald E. Anthony. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: 11 a.m., Saturday at the church.

Astor Thompson “Tom” Lynn, 87, Salisbury, died Thursday (Feb. 28, 2002) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Mary Mason

MOCKSVILLE — Mary Mason, 99, 235 Mason Drive, died Thursday (Feb. 28, 2002) at Autumn Care Nursing Home after a period of declining health.

Born in Davie County, Mrs. Mason was a daughter of the late Samuel and Mollie Hairston. She was a member of Cedar Grove Baptist Church, where she was Mother of the Church.

Survivors include son Ernest Mason Jr.; daughter Virga Marie Frost, Lexington; and 12 grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m., Saturday, Cedar Grove Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. James Clement. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 2:30 p.m., Saturday at the church.

Neva Angie Morgan

The funeral will be Saturday for Neva Angie Morgan, 101, Salisbury, who died Wednesday (Feb. 27, 2002) at Liberty Commons and Rehabilitation of Rowan after a short illness.

Born Sept. 28, 1900, in Rowan County, Ms. Morgan, a daughter of the late Julius Alexander and Lula Jane Basinger Morgan, was educated in the Rowan County schools.

She retired from Cannon Mills after more than 40 years of employment. Earlier in life, she worked on the family farm. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church.

Survivors include sister Ruby Hopkins, Salisbury.

Services: 3 p.m., Saturday, Grace Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Woodrow Frick. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: At the church fellowship hall after the service.

Beulah W. Propst

KANNAPOLIS — Beulah Wakefield Propst, 93, formerly of Brantley Road, died Thursday (Feb. 28, 2002) at Transitional Health Services after a number of years of declining health.

Born Feb. 26, 1909, in Cabarrus County, Mrs. Propst was a daughter of the late Andrew J. and Elizabeth Eddleman Propst.

In 1972 she retired from Cannon Mills set department after 47 years. She was a member of Center Grove Lutheran Church.

Survivors include brother Eugene M.Propst, Kannapolis.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Lady’s Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Hoke Ritchie. Burial,Center Grove Lutheran Church cemetery.

Visitation: 1-2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

GRANITE QUARRY — Dr. C. Foy Sherman, 79, Granite Quarry, died Thursday (Feb. 28. 2002) at his home from an apparent heart attack.

‘Shorty’ Washington

BADIN — Earnest “Shorty”Washington, 79, 218 Lincoln St., died Thursday (Feb. 28, 2002) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Born Nov. 20, 1922, in Worth County, Ga., Mr. Washington was a son of the late Franklyn and Bytha Washington. He was educated in the Worth County schools.

Retired from Alcoa Badin Works, he was a member of the 25 Year Service Club. He was a member and former trustee at Mount Zion Baptist Church and a former Mason.

His wife, Ina McLendon Washington, preceded him in death.

Survivors include sons Earnest Washington Jr., New London, and Jonathan R. Washington, of the home; daughters Patricia W. McKenzie, Salisbury, and Nicole R. Washington, of the home; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday, Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. David L. Thompson. Burial, Pleasant Hill Baptist Church cemetery, Ansonville.

Visitation: 1:30 p.m. Monday at the church.

Jerry Wayne Whisonant, 50, 1450 Sells Road, died Thursday (Feb. 28, 2002) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after two months of serious illness.
