Carson-Newman upset 20th-ranked Catawba 95-77 in men’s basketball action on Wednesday night at Goodman Gym and moved into a three way tie atop the league standings.
The loss snapped a nine-game win streak for Catawba, dropping the Indians to 16-3 overall and 6-1 in the SAC.
Carson-Newman won for the 15th time in the last 16 games in improving to 15-4 and 6-1.
Brian Carter, the league’s leading scorer, led Catawba with 24 points and added seven rebounds. Kevin Petty tallied 14 and Terrence Hamilton added 13 points and five assists.
Carson-Newman placed all five starters in double figures, led by Kyle Gribble with 20. Lorenzo Davis added 15 and Dustin Edwards scored 13 points and added eight rebounds.
Catawba women 70, Carson-Newman 63
Catawba College got double-doubles from Danyel Locklear and Dorthell Little to move back into a tie for second place in the South Atlantic Conference with a 70-63 victory over visiting Carson-Newman on Wednesday night at Goodman Gym.
Catawba improves to 14-4 overall and 5-2 in the SAC, while Carson-Newman falls to 9-8 and 5-2.
Carson-Newman led by seven in the early stages of the second half, but freshman Isiaette Darden put Catawba ahead to stay on a layin with 4:15 to play.
Locklear finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Little added 11 points and 12 rebounds.
Darden reached double figures for the fourth straight game with 10 points.
