East girls win easily over Mooresville

BY BRET STRELOW
SALISBURY POST

MOORESVILLE—East Rowan girls coach Randy Bingham left the locker room and quickly disguised himself with the ever popular black-rimmed-glasses-and-fake-nose combo.

Bingham hid his identity, but the real Mustangs showed up this time against 3A North Piedmont Conference cellar- dweller Mooresville.

East Rowan, which struggled to an eight-point win against the Blue Devils on Jan. 12, dominated Mooresville in a 48-36 win on Tuesday night.

The score might not indicate such a sound beating, but Bingham called off the dogs in both the second and fourth quarters.

“It just felt smooth and easy,” East guard Tiffany Ingold said. “Last time it was real choppy, with a lot turnovers and not taking care of the ball. This time everybody got into it and felt the rhythm.”

East (16-2, 6-1) led only 11-10 with 1:12 left in the first quarter, but the Mustangs ran off 13 unanswered points over the next 8 minutes, 46 seconds before Bingham pulled his starters.

East led only 24-14 at halftime, but the Mustangs’ outscored Mooresville (2-15, 0-7) 20-4 in the third quarter.

Maggie Rich led the Mustangs with 14 points, and Jordan Huffman scored 10.

They couldn’t have done it without the help of Ingold (five assists) and Christal MacLamroc(four assists).

“They’re looking for each other more,”Bingham said. “Tonight was probably the best as far as looking for each other.”

Ingold, along with backup guard Haley Shaw, also gave the Mustangs a boost with their shooting.

Ingold hit one of two attempts in the first half but looked ready to go during intermission, when she impatiently waited for several minutes with a ball in her hand as Mooresville’s dance team performed near midcourt.

Ingold hit both of her 3-point attempts in the second half and finished with eight points.

“A lot of times at halftime I get cold, so I want to hurry up and shoot and get back into the game,”joked Ingold, who also had five boards.“I was just waiting for them to get off so we could go play.”

Shaw wasn’t shy about shooting. She attempted 11 shots — most of which came from the left wing — and hit four jumpers to finish with nine points.

“I try to put it up when I’m open,” Shaw succinctly said. “If not, I try to get it out.”

Rich and Huffman often headline for their scoring, but the already-imposing Mustangs are tough to top when Ingold and Shaw join the fray.

“It’s all the difference,” Bingham said. “When Haley and Tiffany hit, we’re hard to beat. It’s hard to guard us because Maggie’s going to score inside and outside.

“I got these two cats shooting outside, and they’re going to bust games open.”
