Regarding the flags at Team Chevrolet:
First of all, in response to all of the letters to the editor, I strongly suggest people find all the facts prior to making judgments. If they have a computer, the entire flag ordinance can be found on the city’s web page (www.ci.salisbury.nc.us).
The part that applies to the flags is found in Section 9.04 (10). These are considered antenna toppers and not flags if they have no staff which will allow them to stand alone and are designed to attract attention as a sales means.
Also, the Federal Flag Code (Public law 94-344), section 3(b) and section 4(i) stipulates uses for the American flag, especially placement on vehicles, and clearly states the flag should never be used for advertising.
Team Chevrolet’s use of the flags is a direct abuse of our American flag. As for private vehicles, the ordinance does not apply to them; individuals can demonstrate their patriotism because they are not using this as a sales device.
For years, car dealers have been informed that antenna toppers are illegal. I’m sure they were informed by zoning and code-enforcement officers that these toppers could be legal if they were on staffs or could stand alone.
People need to know the city ordinances and federal flag codes so as not to disrespect either one. My father served this country and protected the flag, and I’ve had friends who died for it. Anyone with respect would know the proper display for the U.S. flag.
