Catawba and Livingstone officials plan to share worship services and start monthly meetings “to begin the process of healing” after a Catawba student’s shooting death Friday.
Emerging from an hour-long meeting Monday, officials announced they will schedule monthly meetings between representatives of both schools, including students and faculty.
“ ... As church-related institutions, we believe it is our duty to work together to overcome death with life,” Catawba Dean William Christie said in a statement prepared after the meeting.
The meeting was called Saturday following the Friday night shooting death of senior football player Darris Morris, 21. Morris was shot in the chest when a fight broke out at a party on Catawba’s campus.
Six Livingstone freshmen are charged with Morris’ murder.
“We are taking very positive steps,”said State Alexander, Livingstone’s executive vice president and chief of staff, after the meeting. Alexander represented
Livingstone, along with Catrelia Hunter, vice president for advancement, and Quentin Johnson, vice president of student affairs.
Those representing Catawba included Christie, Dr. Kenneth Clapp, chaplain and senior vice president andTonia Black-Gold, chief communications officer. Catawba President Fred Corriher Jr. was vacationing in Europe at the time of the shooting and is on his way back.
Officials would not comment on the specifics discussed at the meeting. Clapp said it’s too early to tell the make-up of the delegations but added that students will play a vital role.
“The group won’t have the same composition all the time,” Clapp said. “We’ve got to continue the relationship we have built with each other.”
The funeral for Morris is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Batesburg-Leesville High School gym in Batesburg, S.C., where his mother lives. Walter Davis Funeral Home, on U.S. 1 in Batesburg, 803-532-9541, is in charge.
