This letter is in reference to the Salisbury Post’s lack of coverage for non-money generating high school sports. As a parent I look forward to supporting my children in their sporting activities, whether in victory or a hard-fought loss. I’ve always thought high school sports are a great way to round out a solid education. I find it hard to comprehend why a paper of your stature would slight the sports that are non-money generating. All students can’t play football, basketball, and baseball.
Thankfully, high school athletic departments realize this and offer many other sports. Unfortunately, your paper ignores the fact that there are other children out there working as hard, if not harder, to succeed in their particular sport. It seems the only time you acknowledge these kids is at playoff time or if there is a crisis situation such as the mixup with the county swim meet.
Last year I used to look forward to reading the weekly summaries about tennis, soccer, volleyball, cross country, wrestling, swimming, and track. This year the summaries have all but disappeared. I am not the only parent who feels this way, and, hopefully, after there was no coverage of the county swim meet more parents will realize your biased reporting and let you know about it.
A Sunday sports column said, “When you are a sports writer, you don’t just cover the sports. You cover the athletes, too.” Well, it is apparent to me the Post “sportswriting” staff must not be sportswriters. Unless you feel covering only the select few is doing the job.
