Rock Hill passes over David Treme

BY MARK WINEKA
SALISBURY POST

The Rock Hill, S.C., City Council this morning offered its city manager job to a Daytona Beach, Fla., man and he accepted.

Salisbury City Manager David Treme was one of four finalists for the position and said he got a call late this morning that Daytona Beach’s Carey Smith had accepted Rock Hill’s offer.

“I have peace about it,” Treme said. He added that he felt led to apply for the position.

Hours before he got the phone call from Rock Hill officials, Treme said, “... The candidates are all very good.”

Except for a telephone call to inform him that he was still in the running, Treme said earlier he hadn’t had contact with Rock Hill since his daylong visit there several weeks ago.

Treme had thought that Rock Hill officials might narrow their to two candidates and have them visit Rock Hill again, he said. Then he got the call about the decision.

A South Carolina native, Treme, 54, has been city manager in Salisbury for 16 years. This is the first time he has applied for a job elsewhere.

Other candidates for the job were Jerry Cox of Huntersville and Steve Sorrell of Hamilton, Ohio.

Salisbury Mayor Susan Kluttz and Rock Hill Mayor Doug Echols attended the same U.S. Council of Mayors meeting last week.
