Etta Louise Bass

Etta Louise Karriker Bass, 78, of Salisbury, died Saturday (Jan. 26, 2002) at her residence.

Summersett Funeral Home is serving the Bass family.

 

‘Hugh’ Fesperman

Manlus “Hugh”Fesperman, 72, of Salisbury, died unexpectedly Friday at Presbyterian Hospital.

Born April 9, 1929, in Rowan County, he was the son of the late Luther Adam and Minnie Foutz Fesperman. He was educated in the Rowan County Schools.

He retired from Cannon Mills Plant #1 in 1994 after 47 years of service.

He was a member of Union Lutheran Church and served actively on the Church Property Committee.

He is survived by his wife, Stella Louise Cauble Fesperman, whom he married on Dec. 21, 1947; sons Larry Wayne Fesperman and Gary Hugh Fesperman, both of Salisbury; sisters Mae Tille and Katie Cook, both of China Grove, Nora Kirkman, Landis, and Nancy Ridenhour, Salisbury; and four grandchildren.

Services: 4 p.m. Wednesday at Union Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. L. Darrell Norris, pastor. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Visitation: 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Powles Funeral Home. Other times, the family will be at the home of son, Gary Fesperman, of Salisbury.

Memorials: Building Fund, Union Lutheran Church, 4470 Bringle Ferry Road, Salisbury, NC 28146.

 

Lillian Deal Hargett

CONCORD — Lillian Deal Hargett, 89, 413 Winecoff School Road, formerly of 105 W. 21st St., Kannapolis, died Saturday (Jan. 26, 2002) at Five Oaks Nursing Center.

Born May 16, 1912, in Rowan County, Mrs. Hargett was a daughter of the late Walter M. and Cora Bostian Deal.

Educated at the Farm Life School, China Grove, she worked in the wrapping department at Cannon Mills for 50 years. She was a member of the U.S. Army’s Women Army Corp. and Mount Zion United Church of Christ.

Her husband, James Hargett, died in 1985.

Survivors include brother Preston Deal, Kannapolis, and sister Sadie Cress, Salisbury.

Services: 3 p.m. Monday, Linn Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove, conducted by the Rev. William Campbell. Burial, Greenlawn Cemetery.

Visitation: 2-3 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Memorials: Mount Zion United Church of Christ, Box 1298, China Grove, NC 28023.

 

Teddy Fraser Leonard

ROCKWELL — Teddy Fraser Leonard, 47, of Rockwell, died Saturday (Jan. 26, 2002) at Rowan Regional Medical Center. Death was unexpected.

Born Oct. 2, 1954, in Stanly County, Mr. Leonard was a son of Barbara Ann and Theodore Wilbur Leonard Jr., Rockwell.

A 1974 graduate of East Rowan High School, he was owner/operator of Teddy’s Bicycle Shop for 29 years and was an avid cyclist.

He attended Gold Hill United Methodist Church and was a member of the Antique Engine Association of Reidsville.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday, Gold Hill United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Carlton Lucas, pastor. Burial, Gold Hill Cemetery.

Visitation: 1-2 p.m. Monday at the church and at other times at the residence. Powles Funeral Home is in charge.

Hall Roach

KANNAPOLIS — Hall Roach, 83, 314 S. Juniper St., died Saturday (Jan. 26, 2002) at NorthEast Medical Center.

Born Feb. 28, 1918, in Royston, Ga., Mr. Roach was a son of the late Dock William and Sallie Elizabeth Crowe Road.

He served in combat with the U.S. Army in France and Germany during World War II and was a member of the American Legion and VFW Post 8989.

He was a retired supervisor with Martin Marietta Stone Co. and attended Blackwelder Park Baptist Church.

Survivors include wife Vassie Lou “Casey” Jordan Roach; step-sons Balus Chastain, Arden, and Robert Glenn Chastain, Salisbury; and six step-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Lady’s Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Stan Welch. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park with rites by DAV of Concord.

Mary Williams Waugh

EAST SPENCER — Mary Williams Waugh, 90, 703 Tanglewood Drive, died Friday (Jan. 25, 2002) at Brian Nursing Center, Salisbury, after a period of declining health.

Born Sept. 22, 1911, in Davie County, Mrs. Waugh was a daughter of the late Effie C. Williams and Charles Harper.

Educated in the Davie County Schools, she retired from M&S Cleaners, Salisbury, and was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church, Mocksville, where she was a Sunday school teacher for many years and sang in the choir.

Her husband, William Waugh, died in 1968, and daughter Johnsie Jackson died July 2, 1976.

Survivors include foster son Ammitt “Bo” Scotton, of the home.

Services: 1 p.m. Tuesday, New Bethel Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Thomas White, pastor. Burial, Oakwood Cemetery.

Visitation: 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Noble & Kelsey Funeral Home is in charge.
