Sports briefs: Davie County’s Stevens hits 33 in victory

Sean Stevens set a personal milestone and helped Davie County pull out a win all in the same night.

Stevens scored 33 points to lead the War Eagles to a 89-71 win against North Davidson.

Stevens collected the 1,000th point of his career in the third quarter, and the game was stopped so coach Jim Young could present him with a honorary basketball.

The War Eagles (11-4, 3-2 CPC) led only 31-30 at the half, but they used a full-court press to produce 59 second-half points. Stevens scored 14 in the decisive third quarter.

Nemanja Kreckovic chipped in with 21 points for Davie, while Dan Sullivan had 16 points and 11 rebounds.

  • Whitaker third-team pick

UNC-Wilmington pitcher Brian Whitaker has been picked as a third-team preseason All-America by Collegiate Baseball.

Whitaker, a senior right-hander from North Rowan High, has been projected by the Collegiate Baseball as the Colonial Athletic Association’s Pitcher of the Year.

Whitaker was 10-3 last season with a 2.20 ERA in 102 innings.

UNC-Wilmington opens the season on Feb. 9 against UNC-Charlotte.

  • West Middle hoops sweeps

The West Middle Bulldog eighth-grade basketball teams earned home wins Thursday.

The girls (5-0) won 52-13 behind 11 points from Rashonda Mayfield and nine each from Tanunika Imes and Nicole Graham.

Lindsey Barrier paced Southeast with five points.

West’s boys (4-1) picked up a 62-19 victory, getting 11 points from Bradley Reid and eight from Robert Wyrick.

Zach Brown led the Patriots with 10.

  • North Hills girls get big win

The North Hills Christian School girls basketball team knocked off first-place Cramerton Christian 60-48 on Thursday.

Lindsey Pullen paced the upset with 29 points. Hollie Holder scored 18 and Carolina Cohen added nine.

  • Club wrestlers open slate

Catawba College’s club wrestling team toppled Georgia Tech in a recent home quad meet.

Catawba got a pin from Connor Coleman at 157 pounds in the win over Georgia Tech.

Anthony Coulson picked up a decision at 235 pounds in a loss to Belmont Abbey, and Nick Wallace posted a couple of forfeit wins at heavyweight.
