James Wesley Baity
MOCKSVILLE — The funeral will be Saturday for James Wesley Baity, 74, N.C. Highway 801 North, who died Wednesday (Jan. 23, 2002) at his home.
Born May 15, 1927, in Davie County, Mr. Baity was a son of the late Flake and Blanche Burgess
Baity. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he served during World War II. He was a heavy equipment operator.
Mr. Baity was a lifelong member of Courtney Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Julia Odolczyk Baity, in 1998.
Survivors include sons James W. and Kenneth W. Baity, both of Mocksville; daughter Patricia B. Boyd, Soda Springs, Idaho; brother William R.
Baity, Mocksville; sisters Frances Warner, Lydia Shore, Betty York and Gaynell Lawrence, all of Mocksville; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Services: 11 a.m., Saturday, Courtney Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. John Brown. Burial, church cemetery.
Visitation: 10 a.m., Saturday, at the church.

Ethel Evans Brandt
KANNAPOLIS — Ethel Eleanor Evans Brandt, 92, 411 Idlewood Drive, died Thursday (Jan. 24, 2002) at Transitional Health Services.
Born Oct. 22, 1909, in Martins Ferry, Ohio, Mrs. Brandt was a daughter of the late Harry and Mary Janet Huck Evans. She lived in Follansbee, W.Va., where she was active with Follansbee Presbyterian Church, prior to moving to Kannapolis in 1994. She was an active member of Second Presbyterian Church in Kannapolis.
Her husband, Clifford Henry Brandt, died Oct. 28, 1996.
Survivors include daughter Karleen Warnix, Kannapolis; 3 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services: 2 p.m., Saturday, Second Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. Brant Piper. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.
Visitation: 12:30-2 p.m., Saturday, in the church parlor. At other times, the family will be at the home. Whitley’s Funeral Home is in charge.

Mary ‘Helen’ Canupp
KANNAPOLIS — Mary “Helen” Weast Canupp, 69, 1217 Burke St., died Thursday (Jan. 24, 2002) at her home.
Born April 6, 1932, in Cabarrus County, Mrs. Canupp was a daughter of the late Paul Wright and Effie Lambert
Weast. She retired from Fieldcrest Cannon Inc. Plant 4 in 1990 and was a member of West A Tabernacle Baptist Church.
Her husband, J.D. Canupp, died Jan. 10, 1984.
Survivors include sons Johnny, Ricky and Jimmy Canupp, all of Kannapolis; brothers William “Bill,” Ray and Kenneth V.
Weast, all of Kannapolis; four grandchildren; 10 stepgrandchildren; and 14
stepgreat-grandchildren.

LEXINGTON — William Bryant Martin, 83, Mendota Avenue, died Wednesday (Jan. 23, 2002) at Lexington Memorial Hospital.
Services were held this morning at Davidson Funeral Home, with burial in Lexington City Cemetery. Military graveside rites were by District 11 Memorial Honor Guard.

‘J.D.’ Powell
Jackson “J.D.” Dallas Powell, 85, Salisbury, died Wednesday (Jan. 23, 2002) at Magnolia Gardens, Spencer.
Born Sept. 12, 1916, in Pickens, S.C., Mr. Powell was a son of the late R.K. and Bertha Galloway Powell. Educated in the Transylvania County schools, he retired from Cannon Mills Plant 1. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theater and received the Purple Heart. He was a member of Faith American Legion Post 327.
A member of Mount Hope United Church of Christ, he was former chairman of the Consistory. Active with Boy Scouts, he received the Silver Beaver Award and volunteered at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico.
Survivors include wife Ruby Katherine Jones Powell, whom he married April 9, 1947; sons A.D. Powell, Salisbury, and Lee K. Powell, China Grove; daughter Phyllis P. Surprise, Key West, Fla.; brothers Fred Powell, Suffolk, Va., Alfred Powell, Spartanburg, S.C., and Earl Powell, Horseshoe; sisters Christine Newton, Pisgah Forest, and Frances
Huneycutt, Brevard; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
