Dixon leading Hokies in scoring

Despite his injury problems this season, Carlos Dixon, a sophomore swingman who played at South Rowan High, is leading Virginia Tech in scoring.

Dixon, who is averaging 12.9 ppg for the Hokies (6-12 overall, 0-6 Big East), scored a career-high 25 points last week in a last-second loss to Villanova.

Dixon averages 3.1 rebounds, 2.9 assists, 1.7 steals and 1 block per game. He’s made 29 3-pointers and is shooting 83.3 percent on free throws.

Sifford getting time at Greensboro College

West Rowan product Terris Sifford, a freshman at Greensboro College, has played in every game and is averaging 3.8 ppg and 4.1 rebounds per game for the Pride (7-7).

Heggins helps WCU knock off Apps

Former South Rowan star Janetta Heggins scored nine points in Western Carolina’s 68-65 Southern Conference win over Appalachian State on Saturday.

Western is 11-5, 4-4.

  • East jayvee boys win at West

MOUNTULLA — The East Rowan jayvee boys basketball team defeated West Rowan on Friday by a score of 61-55.

Leading scorers for the Mustangs were Michael Lefko with 17; Craig Beasley with 14; Alstin Vanderford with 10; and Brian Honeycutt with 9.

Leading rebounder was Collins Weber with 8 . Weber also led the team in assists.

East (10-2 overall, 3-1 NPC Conference) hosts on Tuesday, Jan. 22.

Owens will miss several more weeks

UTEP senior Leonard Owens, who played at Salisbury High, has been diagnosed with a fracture in his right knee and will be out several more weeks.

“ Leonard is a guy who can help you in a lot of different ways,” Miners coach Jason Rabedeaux said at his weekly press conference. “He’s a senior and he’s a leader. That’s what makes it the hardest. But injuries are the one part of the game that are out of your control.”

Erwin boys stay hot in first round

GRANITEQUARRY — Howard Hurt and Kurt Misenheimer scored 16 points each on Saturday, as Erwin’s boys pounded Corriher-Lipe 53-16 in the first round of the Mid-South Middle School tourney.

It was the 15th straight win for the top-seeded Eagle boys.

South Davie’s girls, also undefeated and top seeded, rolled over North Rowan 32-24 behind Brittini Young’s 18 points.

Rebecca Cooper scored 11 points and had 21 rebounds, as the Erwin girls beat China Grove 32-15.

In other girls games, Portland Abel hit two fourth-quarter 3-pointers to lead the Knox girls to a 33-31 upset of West Rowan. Jenny Mann scored 17 to lead North Davie to a 58-34 win over Southeast.

Doug Campbell’s 15 points led Knox past China Grove 34-31.

In other boys games, North Rowan routed West Rowan 49-14 behind Keegan Linza’s 12 points and Zach Mills scored 13 to lead Southeast to a 34-32 upset of North Davie.

Semis are today. Finals are tomorrow. All games are at Erwin.

YMCA hosts bench press championships

The Salisbury YMCA’s annual bench press championships will be held on Feb. 16.

There will seven divisions.

Entry fee is $5 for high schoolers, $7 for college and $30 for open and masters participants.

Softball tryouts

The Carolina Dream Team 14&under ASA and NSA fast-pitch softball team will have tryouts on Saturday, Jan. 26 from 1-4 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 3, from 1:30-4 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 10, from 1:30-4 p.m.

Sherrill named coach at Lake Norman

Lake Norman High School’s first-ever head football coach is Scott Sherrill, who has been head coach at North Mecklenburg the past four years.

Lake Norman will compete in the 3A North Piedmont Conference next school year.

East Rowan and West Rowan will try to fit Lake Norman into the football schedule this fall.

A.L. Brown won’t be able to play Lake Norman until 2003, when the Wildcats are expected to replace South Point on the Wonders’ schedule.

Pfeiffer game is postponed

Pfeiffer’s basketball doubleheader against Longwood on Saturday was postponed due to bad weather in Virginia.

The game will be made up on Thursday, Feb. 21.
