Walter Warren Canup

OAKBORO — Walter Warren Canup, 81, 15564 Pecan Grove Road, died Saturday (Jan. 19, 2002) at his residence.

Born Nov. 16, 1920, in Faith, Mr. Canup was a son of the late William Walter Canup and Pearl Lefler Canup Hagler.

He was a retired crane operator from Teledyne-Alvac Steel Mill and served in U.S. Army in the European Theatre during World War II.

He was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, where he a deacon and Sunday school teacher and member of Pleasant Grove Treasured Friends.

His son, Rodney Warren Canup, died on on Dec. 23, 2001.

Survivors include wife Ruby McIntyre Canup; daughters Delaine Eddleman, Concord, and Judy Barbee, Locust; brothers Jimmie Canup, Kannapolis, and Craig Canup, Durham; sisters Oleta Wright, Willie Shaver and Garnell Thompson, all of Kannapolis, and Johnsie Dunn, Greenville, SC; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday, Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Barry Whitley. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 12:30-2 p.m. Monday at the church. At other times, the family will be at the home. Hartsell Funeral Home, Albemarle, is in charge.

 

Flora Belle Crepps

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Monday for Flora Belle Gaddy Crepps, 96, 14400 Buckton Lane, Matthews, formerly of North East Avenue, who died Friday (Jan. 19, 2002) at Presbyterian Hospital, Matthews.

Born May 25, 1905, in Rockingham, Mrs. Crepps was a daughter of the late Jerome Winfield and Mary Elizabeth Gulledge Gaddy.

She retired 30 years ago from the No. 4 weave room of Cannon Mills Plant 1. She spent most of her life in Kannapolis and moved to Matthews five years ago. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church.

A daughter, Mildred “Micky”Groscup, died in 1983, and a son, William L. “Bill” Crepps Jr., died in 1991.

Survivors include daughter Carol Edmiston, Matthews; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday, Lady’s Funeral Home, conducted by Dr. Joseph R. Crawford and Kris Edscorn. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 1-2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home and at other times at the home of daughter Carol Edmiston, 14400 Buckton Lane, Matthews.

Memorials: First Presbyterian Church, 201 Vance St., Kannapolis, NC 28081.

 

Clyde Davidson

LINWOOD — The funeral will be Wednesday for Clyde Baxter Davidson, 70, 442 Clark Road, Lot 3, who died Friday (Jan. 18, 2002) at his residence after several years of declining health.

Born March 5, 1931, in Davie County, Mr. Davidson was a son of the late Hiram and Nellie Tenor Davidson. He was educated in the Davie County Schools, retired from Duke Power Co. and was a member of the Church of Christ, Salisbury.

Survivors include wife Biddie Smith Davidson; sons Clyde Baxter Staton, Voorheese, N.J., Richard Louis Davidson, of the home, Rondol Lee Davidson, Greensboro, and Elvis Jerome Davidson, High Point; daughters Wanda Davidson-Hughey, Charlotte, and Tammy Hairston, Lexington; brother Fred Davidson, Salisbury; sisters, Gloria Whitaker, Boston, Mass., Annette Wilkins, Salisbury, the Rev. Hattie Williams, Mocksville, and Maenell Tatum, Greensboro; 14 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services: 1 p.m. Wednesday, Noble & Kelsey Funeral Home, conducted by Brother John L. Hall. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home and at other times at the home of daughter Tammy Hairston, 600 Liberty Ave., Lexington.

 

Bethune J. Fortson

KANNAPOLIS — Bethune J. Forston, 78, 1301 Mt. Vernon Ave., died Saturday (Jan. 19, 2002) at his residence.

Whitley’s Funeral Home is in charge.

 

James ‘Duck’ Mullis

KANNAPOLIS — James “Duck”Mullis, 78, 205 Dale Ave., died Saturday (Jan. 19, 2002) at his residence.

Services: Tuesday, Central Baptist Church.

Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Monday, Whitley Funeral Home.

 

Ethel Norris Sloop

Ethel Norris Sloop, 87, Salisbury, died Saturday (Jan. 19, 2002) at N.C. Lutheran Home.

Born April 28, 1914, in Gaston County, Mrs. Sloop was a daughter of the late Fred and Nancy Morris Norris.

Educated in the Rowan County Schools, she had worked at Cannon Mills as a spinner and at Linn Mills, Landis.

She was a member of St. Matthews Lutheran Church, where she was a member of the Challengers Circle, Hazel Trexler Sunday School Class and St. Matthews Senior Citizens Club.

Her husband, Herman R. Sloop, died on Feb. 20, 1988.

Survivors include son Jimmie R. Sloop, Salisbury; daughter Nancy Williams, Salisbury; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday, St. MatthewsLutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Bill Jeffcoat, former pastor. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 4-6 p.m. today, Powles Funeral Home.

Memorials: St. Matthews Lutheran Church, Memorial Fund, 9275 Bringle Ferry Road, Salisbury, NC 28144.

 

Bob Surratt

DENTON — Robert W. “Bob”Surratt, 89, N.C. 109 South, died Saturday (Jan. 19, 2002) at Autumn Care Nursing Home, Salisbury.

Briggs Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Ruth Thomason

Ruth Baker Thomason, 81, Salisbury, died Saturday (Jan. 19, 2002) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after a period of declining health.

Born Jan. 22, 1920, in Rowan County, Mrs. Thomason was a daughter of the late Samuel E. and Annie Goodnight Baker.

Educated in the Rowan County Schools, she was a member of Franklin Presbyterian Church and retired from Cannon Mills.

Her husband, Wilburn Turner Thomason Sr., died on Jan. 30, 1968.

Survivors include son Wilburn Turner Thomason Jr., Salisbury; daughter Ann Pruett, Salisbury; brothers, Frank “Bub” Baker, Mooresville, and Tom Baker, Salisbury; sisters, Betty Simpson, China Grove, Jean Wooten, Cleveland, Dot Shaver, Rockwell, and Bea Litaker and Jane Shaver, both of Salisbury; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday, Summersett Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Larry Summey. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.
