The Lexington boys are about flash, evident by the team’s alley-oop dunks and Patrick White’s shiny, orange shoes.
But there’s a whole lot of substance to the Yellow Jackets, too.
Lexington put on an impressive show of athletic ability and skill and handed Salisbury’s boys an 89-40 defeat on Friday night.
The Yellow Jackets (6-0, 12-4 in the CCC) connected on 16 fields goals in the first quarter alone, then held the Hornets (5-10, 3-3) to a combined four makes in the next two periods to blow the game wide open.
“One day we’ll be that good at Salisbury High School,” Hornet coach Drew Mathews said with a smile. “They are a very athletic and talented team, and our goal here at Salisbury High School is to play at that level.”
Mathews and his Hornets got a courtside view of just how impressive the Yellow Jackets are.
Lexington hit 16 of its 25 shots in the first quarter, including a one-handed, alley-oop slam from Corry Holt, to take a 31-15 lead.
The Hornets fell into a bigger hole after that by making only 3 of 22 shots in the second quarter and 1 of 13 in the third quarter.
Lexington had a 68-30 advantage after three periods and led by as many as 52 points.
“One of the things we have established is the inside game, and this week I met with the outside people,” Mathews said.“They’re going to have to start looking for their shots and making baskets to open it up for Matt (Butler) and Sharmari(Spears).”
Spears scored a season-low five points, but Butler finished with a team-high 17. He hit his first five shots for 10 points in the opening quarter and had 15 at the half.
“I just came out ready to play,”Butler said. “I had to step it up against Lexington.”
Butler, Spears and the rest of the starters sat for most of the second half. Lexington led 45-27 at the break, then scored scored nine consecutive points to open the third quarter.
Mathews replaced all five starters with 4:40 left in the quarter and didn’t put them back in until 5:19 remained in the fourth.
Less than two minutes later, Mathews put his reserves back in, this time for the remainder of the contest.
“When you’re down 30 points, those kids need to be put in a situation so I can see if they can do anything to help us down the stretch,”Mathews said.
Julian Greene and Patrick Doleman scored seven and four points, respectively, for the Hornets off the bench. Ulyses Ashe scored 25 points for Lexington, and Michael Hogan had 21.
“(Ashe) was doing it all tonight,” Lexington coach Don Corry said. “If he plays like that, we’ll be real tough to beat.”
