SPENCER — North Rowan’s girls basketball team remains trapped in a season-long nightmare.
The lost-at-sea Cavaliers could use a compass after Friday’s 71-40 blowout loss to visiting Central Davidson. They were a team without a plan, seemingly making it up as they went along.
“We just don’t seem to be clicking,” junior Moriah Jones said after North (1-5 CCC) suffered its 14 loss in 15 games. “It isn’t much fun right now.”
It was for Central (7-8, 3-3 CCC), which opened a 13-0 lead in the first three minutes and owned a 26-3 advantage after one quarter.
“They came out with a lot more intensity than we did,” said Cavs coach Mike White. “I thought we were gonna match them, based on how we looked in the warm-up. But our defense wasn’t good and the girls starting getting frustrated, committing bad fouls, missing free throws and easy shots. There’s only so much you can do.”
While the Cavs were ping-ponging shots off the glass, Central was executing its run-and-gun offense with precision. The guests limited North to four baskets in the first half, extending their lead to 45-14 at the break.
“We got several steals, pushed the ball up the floor and really took care of it,” said winning coach Kevin Hudson. “We didn’t do anything silly.”
It didn’t take long for North forward Crystal Craige to realize something was terribly wrong. “Once they got a lead on us, we just broke down,” she said. “We didn’t try hard. That’s something we have to stop. We need to get our heads on straight and find a way to win.”
Their heads were too busy spinning. North, which suffered a 39-point loss at Ledford on Tuesday, trailed by as much as 67-24 late in the third quarter.
“We’re a little shell-shocked,” said White. “You look at our record, you look at our last two games, and you might not think we’re improving. But we are. It’s been tough, but we’re starting to play like a team.”
