MOCKSVILLE— Thanks to a miserable second quarter, the numbers don’t do justice for what the Davie County girls basketball team did Friday night to South Rowan.
In the second half, however, the War Eagles simply couldn’t miss. They outscored the Raiders 45-30 in the final two quarters and raced away to a 66-57 victory.
“The shooting was good and my team played OK, we just weren’t persistent and consistent on defense all night long,”South head coach James Greene said. “I just didn’t expect for them to shoot the ball that well, and they really did.”
Led by senior Sarah Williams’ 27 points, 16 from sophomore Allison Schafer and 15 by junior Brittany Walker, Davie stormed back from a 27-21 halftime deficit and 38-28 third-quarter hole. The trio scored nine straight points midway though the third period to give Davie a 39-38 edge, but the War Eagles were just getting started.
“The thing we had to do was be patient in our half-court offense — not to be confused with ‘slow,’ but patient,”Davie head coach Carole Cozart joked. “We had to keep moving the ball and looking for our chances.”
Davie (8-7 overall, 2-1 Central Piedmont Conference) scored several points inside against the taller Raiders, but did most of its damage with its jump shots and free throws.
Walker scored six straight points midway through the fourth quarter to give Davie a 54-51 edge. Williams then took over, scoring nine straight points for the War Eagles to extend the gap to 63-55 with 1:17 remaining.
Williams hit 11 of 11 free throws for the game and nailed four 3-pointers. Schafer scored 10 points alone in the third quarter after going scoreless in the opening half. South (10-6, 2-1) kept switching defenses in a vain attempt to stop the Davie shooters, who went 13-for-23 (57 percent) in the second half.
“... Trying to find what worked and keep a little pressure on the ball,”Greene said.
Sophomore Paris Rucker paced South with 16 points in the middle two quarters and 20 for the game. She scored on a variety of moves in the lane and added eight rebounds. Fellow soph Sade Jordan tallied 14 points and 15 rebounds.
