Sports briefs: Erwin Middle School team finishes season undefeated

WINSTON-SALEM — Erwin Middle School’s undefeated seventh-grade boys basketball team closed out its regular season with a 59-46 triumph over Forsyth Country Day here Thursday. It was the 14th straight win for coach John Cherry’s Eagles.

Erwin, the No. 1 seed for the Mid-South Conference Tournament at Erwin on Saturday, had three players in double figures — Ross Steedley with 19, Howard Hurt with 18 and Kurt Misenheimer with 16.

Hurt was 4-for-7 on 3s, and Steedley made two 3s. Misenheimer, Hurt and Steedley were a combined 18-for-18 at the foul line.

Hurt and Steedley led the rebounding with seven and six, respectively, and Misenheimer had five rebounds and five steals.

Erwin’s girls fell to Forsyth for the second time this season, 35-23, and finished 9-5. Rebecca Cooper led the Eagles with 12 points, six rebounds and two blocked shots. Gina Loflin scored eight points. Amanda Dunaway had eight rebounds and two blocks. Leeanne Shaver had five boards.

  • Pfeiffer teams drop pair of tough games

Pfeiffer lost both games in a CVAC basketball doubleheader by a single point on Thursday night.

Lees-McRae escaped with wins over the Falcons, taking the women’s game 47-46 and the men’s game 94-93.

Michelle Atkins led the Pfeiffer women, who dropped their second straight in the league, with 11 points.

Pfeiffer’s struggling men squandered a 21-point halftime lead and fell despite 28 points by Tyree Harris. Terrence McCutcheon had 11 rebounds.

  • Thompson wins twice for Hornets

Jacque Thompson led the way for Salisbury’s indoor track team in a meet at South Rowan, winning the 1000 meters in 3:33 and the 1600 in 5:40.

Finishing second for the Hornets were Meredith Martin in the 1000 at 3:48 and Anna Griffis in the 1600 at 5:42. Griffis reached her state qualifying time in the 1600.

Salisbury competes at North on Wednesday.

  • Softball tryouts

The Carolina Dream Team 14&under ASA and NSA fast-pitch softball team will have tryouts on Saturday, Jan. 26 from 1-4 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 3, from 1:30-4 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 10, from 1:30-4 p.m.
