William Brady Barney

MOCKSVILLE — Funeral services will be held today for William Brady Barney, 82, Cornatzer Road, who died Wednesday (Jan. 16, 2002) at his home.

Born June 6, 1919, in Davie County, Mr. Barney was a son of the late Charlie Cooper and Bashie Doby Barney.

He retired from P.H. Hanes Knitting Co. and had worked for Erwin Mills and as a self-employed carpenter. He was a life member of Cornatzer Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, church treasurer and member of the Grounds Committee.

Survivors include wife Lucy B. Barney and two grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. today, Cornatzer Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Richard Whiteheart and the Rev. B.A. Carroll. Burial, church cemetery. Eaton Funeral Home is in charge.

Visitation was held earlier.

James Cook

NEW LONDON — James Cook, 87, 707 Ditmas Ave., Brooklyn, N.Y., formerly of Stanly County, died Monday (Jan. 14, 2002) at Community Hospital, Brooklyn, N.Y.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, McDonald Chapel AME Zion Church, Badin, conducted by the Rev. Curtis Long, pastor. Burial, Oak View Cemetery, New London.

Visitation: 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the church. Kelsey Funeral Home, Albemarle, is in charge.

 

Mamie S. Cuthrell

MOCKSVILLE — Mamie Lue Stimpson Cuthrell, 92, formerly of Harmony, died Sunday (Jan. 13, 2002) at Brian Center, Statesville.

Survivors include sons Olander “Landis” Cuthrell, Mocksville, and Jessie Cuthrell, Lexington; daughters Mamie Jones, Mocksville, Helen Pruitt and Molly Redmond, both of Harmony; 35 grandchildren; 83 great-grandchildren; and 40 great-great-grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Sunday, Piney Grove AME Zion Church, Harmony. The body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8 p.m. Saturday, Graham Funeral Home. The rest of the time, the family will be at 301 Galliher Road, Harmony.

 

The Rev. Asa Dyson

ALBEMARLE — The Rev. Asa Ray Dyson, 79, 30471 B Cane Drive, died Thursday (Jan. 17, 2002) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Stanly Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Sid Martin and the Rev. Ronnie Dyson. Burial, Stanly Gardens of Memory with military rites by Stanly County DAV Ritual Team.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight at the funeral home.

 

Anna Potts Elkins

LEXINGTON — Anna Lynn Potts Elkins, 68, 710 Davidson Ave., died Wednesday (Jan. 16, 2002), at Forsyth Memorial Hospital, Winston-Salem.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Friendship United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Randy Lucas. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 5-7 tonight, Davidson Funeral Home. The rest of the time, the family will be at the home.

George C. Frizzell

LEXINGTON — George Collins Frizzell, 73, Leonard Road, died Thursday (Jan. 17, 2002) at Forsyth Medical Center after an extended illness.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Davidson Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Frankie Matthews. Burial, Forest Hill Memorial Park with military graveside rites.

Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home, and at other times, at the home on Leonard Road.

 

Albert C. Johnsen

Albert Christian Johnsen, 91, Salisbury, died Wednesday (Jan. 16, 2002) at Genesis Eldercare.

Born Aug. 31, 1910 in Sidney, Mich., Mr. Johnsen was a son of the late Chris and Emma Carlson Johnsen. He graduated from Western Michigan University and received a master’s degree from the University of Michigan.

He was a school superintendent for 35 years in Michigan.

He also played minor league baseball with the Cincinnati Reds and is in the Sports Hall of Fame in baseball.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include wife Jean I. Johnsen; sons Dr. David Johnsen, Iowa City, Iowa, and Dr. Eric Johnsen, Albemarle; daughter Harriet Jernquist, New Jersey; brother Axel Johnsen, Michigan; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, First Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. Randy Kirby. The body will be cremated.

Visitation: None. Evergreen Cremation Services is in charge.

Memorials: Donor’s choice.

 

James ‘Jim’ Phifer

ALBEMARLE — James “Jim” Harry Phifer, 79, 313 Harwood St., died Sunday (Jan. 13, 2002) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.

Born June 28, 1922, in Rowan County, Mr. Phifer was a son of the late Nannie Phifer Donahue.

He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II and was a retired, self-employed auto mechanic.

Survivors include wife Dottie Ann Horn Phifer and son James Tucker, Albemarle.

The funeral was held Wednesday at Hartsell Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Wiley Rutledge. Burial, Stanly Gardens of Memory.

 

Julia C. Ridenhour

ROCKWELL — Julia Calloway Ridenhour, 78, Rockwell, died Thursday (Jan. 17, 2002) at Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation, Salisbury.

Born April 20, 1923, in Iredell County, Mrs. Ridenhour was a daughter of the late William Stamey and Addie Fisher Calloway. She was educated at Enochville School.

A homemaker, she was a member of Ursinus United Church of Christ.

Her husband, Clyde M. Ridenhour, died June 4, 1987.

Survivors include brothers Vernon Calloway, Cleveland, Ohio, and Ernest Calloway, Spencer, and sisters Jessie C. Rogers, Salisbury, and Tinnie C. Carpenter, Landis.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, graveside, Ursinus United Church of Christ, conducted by the Rev. Jim Staunton, pastor.

Visitation: 10-11 a.m. Saturday, Powles Funeral Home.

 

Mary Ellerbe Smith

Mary Johnson Ellerbe Smith, 77, 225 S. Link Ave., formerly of Wadesboro, died Tuesday (Jan. 15, 2002) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born Aug. 19, 1924, in Forsyth County, Mrs. Smith was a daughter of the late William Thomas and Fannie Landrum Johnson.

Survivors include sons William Ellerbe, Fayetteville, Charles Ellerbe, Sterling, Va., Walter Ellerbe, Wadesboro, and Anthony Ellerbe, Norwood; daughters Margaret Cooper, Upper Marlboro, Md., Bobbie Jean Smith, Sterling, Va., Donnie M. Thompson, Pittsburgh, Pa., Carolyn Ellerbe, Wadesboro, Sonya Ellerbe, Salisbury, Myrtle Page, Washington, D.C., Julia Marion Ashe, San Bernardino, Calif., and Bessie Mae Allen, Greensboro; sister Myrtle Doby, Winston-Salem; 15 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Services: Noon Saturday, United Christian Fellowship Church. Public viewing, 2-8 p.m. today, Harris Funeral Home, Monroe. Burial Westview Memorial Park, Wadesboro.

Visitation: 11 a.m.-12 p.m., Saturday at the church.

 

Lawrence T. Steelman

KANNAPOLIS — Lawrence Thomas Steelman, 89, 8475 Freeze Road, died Wednesday (Jan. 16, 2002) at his home after a number of years of declining health.

Born Sept. 15, 1912, in Davie County, Mr. Steelman was a son of the late Harding and Minnie Jane Sharpe Steelman.

He retired after 48 years in the sewing room of Cannon Mills Plant 1, where he was a machine mechanic. Mr. Steelman was also a “gentleman farmer” and member of West Point Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and trustee and was director of the Sunday school and training union.

Two sons, Earl Dean and Roger Wayne Steelman, and a grandson preceded him in death.

Survivors include wife Lucille Reavis Steelman; daughter Lu Ann Campbell, Cleveland; son Harvey L. Steelman, Laurinburg; brother Bill Steelman, Advance; sister Dora Eads, Yadkinville; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, West Point Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Greg Barefoot. Burial, South Oak Ridge Baptist Church cemetery.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Lady’s Funeral Home.

ALBEMARLE — Lula B. Talbert, 101, 520 Anderson Road, died Friday (Jan. 18, 2002) at her home.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Hartsell Funeral Home chapel. Burial, Laton Family Cemetery.

Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. The rest of the time, the family will be at the home of nephew Bill Talbert at 520 Anderson Road, Albemarle.

 

Lency Roper York

ALBEMARLE — Lency Roper York, 88, 141 S. Cotton Ave., died Wednesday (Jan. 16, 2002) at her home.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Saints Delight Church, conducted by Elder James E. Richardson, pastor. Burial, Thomasville Missionary Baptist Church cemetery, Mount Gilead.
