A.L. Brown star Chris Carter has verbally committed to play football at Clemson.
Carter, who took his official visit to Clemson this past weekend, rushed for 1,321 yards and caught 28 passes for 597 yards during the 2001 season. He scored 27 touchdowns as a senior.
Western Carolina was also after Carter, who could play defensive back in college.
- Hill knots career-high in win
ROANOKE — Courtney Hill exploded for a career-high 28 points on Wednesday night in Guilford’s 78-72 women’s basketball win over Hollins.
Hill, a freshman forward from North Rowan, shot 12-for-15 from the field and 4-for-5 from the line. She added seven rebounds and five steals in 32 minutes of action.
Guilford improved to 11-2 with the win.
- Honeycutt has seven in win
GREENSBORO — Megan Honeycutt scored seven points — a career-high — and had three rebounds as UNC Greensboro’s women’s basketball team pounded North Carolina A&T 88-45 on Wednesday night.
Honeycutt, a sophomore wing player, is a North Rowan grad.
- Former Cav nabs nine in win
Bryan McCullough, last season’s Rowan County Player of the Year, scored nine points on Wednesday night as UNC Asheville’s men’s basketball team beat High Point University 83-72.
McCullough hit four of his eight shots from the floor for Asheville.
- AAU hoops tryouts Saturday

Catawba’s Hit and Run baseball camp will be held Saturday at Newman Park.

- Reid named Player of Week
Pfeiffer junior guard Shannon Reid has been named the CVAC Player of the Week for women’s basketball.
Reid scored 52 points in Pfeiffer’s wins over Mount Olive and Barton.
GRANITE QUARRY — The East Rowan jayvee boys basketball team defeated A.L. Brown 54-41 on Tuesday.
Leading scorers for the Mustangs (9-2, 2-1) were Alstin Vanderford with 16 and Brian Honeycutt with 10.
Michael Lefko, Craig Beasley, Collins Weber, and Justin Hammonds each added six points. Leading rebounders were Honeycutt with eight and Beasley with six. Weber had four steals.
South Rowan’s Spring Fling Jamboree for baseball players ages 9-12 will take place on March 1-3 at the China Grove baseball fields.
Registration will be held each Saturday at the China Grove Middle School gym, from Jan. 19-Feb. 23. The fee is $10.
Players will be assigned to teams by random draft.

The Jr. Sting Basketball program is for girls ages 7-15 and the co-ed league is for boys and girls ages 5-6.
Cost is $25 for city residents and $50 for non-residents.

Registration hours are Monday- Thursday from noon-7 p.m; Friday from noon-5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

Locals captured honors this weekend at the Salisbury Parks & Recreation Department’s annual Charlotte Hornet
2-Ball Local Competition.
A total of 28 participants teamed up for the basketball competition on Sunday at Hall Gym.
Winners were:
Boys 8-11: 1st, Alex Pope-Austin
Flynn; 2nd, Damian Beaver-Brandon Edwards; 3rd, Matt Sheets-Clay Browning and Spencer Carmichael-James Kyger.
Boys 12-14: 1st, Howard Hurt-Kurt Misenheimer; 2nd, Nick Smith-Andy Smith; 3rd, Zachary Rose and Zach Robertson

First-place finishers advance to the sectionals at Newton.
The Salisbury Parks and Recreation Department will host a USSSA umpire clinic on Sunday, Feb. 3, at the Salisbury Civic Center.
Directors will meet at the Center (315 South Boundary Street in Salisbury) at 11 a.m.
The clinic will be held at 1p.m.
Cost for the clinic is $45.
All umpires who want to officiate at Salisbury Parks and Recreation events must be USSSA certified.

Rowan County Youth Soccer Association is taking registrations for its spring 2002 boys recreation league and girls recreation league.
Players can register now at Strictly Soccer, 101 South Main Street, Salisbury.
The cost for early registration is $40 for players returning from the fall 2001 season and $50 for new players. The registration fee includes the team jersey. After Feb. 8, the cost for registration will increase by $10.
Both leagues feature age divisions for kindergarten through grade 5, trained volunteer coaches, USSF certified referees, and an emphasis on player development.
Practice will begin on Feb.14 and the playing season begins on March 9.
The RCYSA recreation leagues practice at the Salisbury Community Park and the Hurley Soccer Complex. All games will be played at the Salisbury Community Park.

Catawba College will offer two fast-pitch softball clinics in January.
The clinics will be held the next two Saturdays, Jan. 20 and Jan. 27 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. The cost is $15 per person.
Hitting and catching fundamentals will be emphasized along with beginning and intermediate pitching skills.

- Hornet jayvees top Warriors
Salisbury beat West Iredell 37-30 in jayvee girls basketball on Tuesday.
Alicia Gray scored 14 to lead the Hornets (3-10, 2-2). Kelly Brown scored 10. Other scorers were Kaylan Blackburn, Katie Garner and Lanesha George.
- China Grove sweeps Jackets
China Grove Middle School won both games of a basketball doubleheader against Corriher-Lipe.
The Red Devil girls won 34-7. The high scorer was Charle Lynn with eight points. Kristen Brown and Erin Morton scored seven each.
Kassie Watson had five for the Yellow Jackets.
China Grove’s boys won 31-15. Leading scorers were Clint Fontenot and Matt Hensley with six each.
Justin Lane scored eight for Corriher-Lipe.
- Rowan 11-&-under baseball
The Rowan 11-&-under AAU/USSSA baseball team will hold tryouts for the 2002 season at the Salisbury Sports Complex on Hurley School Road at 1 p.m. on Saturday and at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday.
The new coach is Gabby Smith, who has recently coached the Kannapolis Cougars 15-17 AAU team.
A busy tournament schedule is expected, so only serious players are encouraged to try out.
