Faye H.Abernathy
KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Saturday for Faye Hendren Abernathy, 94, formerly of 428 S. Main St., who died Wednesday (Jan. 9, 2002) at Universal HealthCare, Concord.
Born Feb. 13, 1907, in Iredell County, Mrs. Abernathy was a daughter of the late Hicks and Pearl Baker Hendren.
In 1984, she retired from Kannapolis City Schools Food Service. She had worked at Aycock School. Earlier, she was employed by Cannon Mills.
She was a member of North Kannapolis Baptist Church for many years.
Her husband, James Fred Abernathy, died in 1959. Son Paul Abernathy died in 1971, and son James W. “Bill”Abernathy died in 2001.
Survivors include daughter Barbara Ann Hardin, Kannapolis; sister Ann Dellinger,Hiddenite; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Services: 3 p.m. Saturday, Whitley’s Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. David Myers, the Rev. Jim Abernathy and the Rev.Coy Privette. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Margaret I. Alexander
COOLEEMEE — Margaret Ijames Alexander, 88, Center Street, died Wednesday (Jan. 9, 2002) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.
Born Aug. 2, 1913, in Cooleemee, Mrs.Alexander was a daughter of the late Jerry and Pearl Koontz Ijames. She was employed in the housing department at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
A member of Cooleemee Episcopal Church, she was affiliated with the VFW Auxiliary.
Survivors include her husband of 61 years, Roy F. Alexander; son Roy F. Alexander Jr., Hillsborough; two grandsons; and a great-granddaughter.
Services: Graveside, 11 a.m. Saturday, Center United Methodist Church cemetery, Mocksville, conducted by the Rev. Perry Bradshaw.

Ethel Shuffler Brown
KANNAPOLIS — Ethel Juanita Shuffler Brown, 60, formerly of 704 Laura Ave., died Wednesday (Jan. 9, 2002) at Kindred Hospital,Greensboro.
Born April 10, 1941, in Rowan County, Mrs. Brown, a daughter of the late Atticus Vernon and Bessie Poplin Shuffler, was educated in the Rowan County schools.
She retired from China Grove Cotton Mills and was a member of Pine Ridge Baptist Church.
Survivors include husband Ernest Daniel Brown; brothers Brady Shuffler, Rockwell, C.M. Shuffler, Salisbury, and Wayne Shuffler, Asheboro; and sister Joyce Williams, Jacksonville, Fla.

Marcella F. Heyd
Marcella F. Heyd, 91, of Shell Point Village, Fla., a former Salisbury resident, died Saturday ( Jan. 5, 2002).
Born March 22, 1910, in Jersey City, N.J., Mrs. Heyd was a daughter of the late Benjamin and Marcella Darling. She graduated from Douglas College for Women in New Jersey.
She married her husband of 59 years, Edward H. Heyd, on June 16, 1934. A resident of Salisbury from 1956-1968, her late husband was administrator of Rowan Regional Medical Center. She attended St. Luke’s Episcopal Church.
A resident of Fort Myers Beach, Fla., for many years, she moved to Shell Point Village in 1991. She was an active member of Iona Hope Episcopal Church in Fort Myers.
Her husband died in 1993. She was also preceded in death by a son, Edward Heyd.
Survivors include sons John Heyd, Riverside, Conn., and Peter Heyd, Charlotte; sisters Elizabeth Hantke, Gables-by-the Sea, Fla., and Martha Brennesholtz, Wilmington, Dele.; 9 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren.
Services: Memorial, 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, Iona Hope Episcopal Church, Fort Myers. A private burial will follow the service.

Betty Cauble Parks
ROCKWELL — Betty Myers Cauble Parks, 65, Rockwell, died Thursday (Jan. 10, 2002) at her home.
Born Feb. 3, 1936, in Rowan County, Mrs. Parks was a daughter of the late Steele and Ethel Myers Myers. She was educated in the Rowan County schools.
A member of Southside Baptist Church, she was a day care director.
Her first husband, Robert C. Cauble, died July 15, 1970, and a son, Robert C. Cauble Jr., died in May 1986.
Survivors include husband George Parks, Marion; son, Milas F. Cauble, Clemmons; daughters Kathy Van Norman, Rockwell, Amy Theye, Salisbury, and Debra Lomax, Lexington; stepsons Robert L. Cauble,Norwood, Phillip Cauble, Salisbury, Johnny Yarboro, Greer, S.C., and David Parks, Marion; brother Tommy Myers, High Point; sisters Blondie Howard, Landis, and Gaynell Fisher, Evelyn Kluttz and Clara Rogers, all of Salisbury; and eight grandchildren.

Hoyle Brown Rodgers
KANNAPOLIS — Hoyle Brown Rodgers, 81, 808 E. 22nd St., died Thursday (Jan. 10, 2002) at his home after a period of declining health.
Born Feb. 10, 1920, in Rowan County, Mr. Rodgers was a son of the late Luke and Minnie Rodgers. He was a graduate of Landis High School.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. A longtime Cannon Mills employee, he later was a gate security guard for Wackenhut. At the time of his death, he was employed by Barton Security Services with Pillowtex.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Landis, and Woodmen of the World and was a past master of Eureka Lodge,China Grove.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Caroline Reavis Rodgers, and daughter, Carolyn Diane Rodgers.
Survivors include son Donald H. Rodgers, Kannapolis; sister Ishmael Gardner, Kannapolis; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Esther G. Shepherd
RALEIGH — Esther Gordon Shepherd, a former Spencer resident, died Tuesday (Jan. 8, 2002) at Springmoor Life Center Health Care.
Born Aug. 9, 1909, in Decatur, Ala., Mrs. Shepherd was a daughter of the late Rev. Myron Wilcox and Mary Crook Gordon.
She was a 1926 graduate of Spencer High School and in 1930 graduated with a home economics degree from Catawba College, Salisbury. In 1940, she received a master’s degree from Cornell University, Ithaca,N.Y., where she was awarded the Ana Cora Smith Fellowship.
A home economics teacher in Alexander County from 1930-1936, she operated a lunchroom for underprivileged children there. She was the Alexander County Home Agent from 1936-1937.
After her May 29, 1937, marriage to Marshal LeRoyce Shepherd, she taught at city junior high schools in Raleigh from 1956-1971. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma in Raleigh and Phi Lambda Theta at Cornell.
She also had homes in Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Land Harbor in Linville. She was a telephone operator for one of only two phones available in Myrtle Beach in the late 1920s and a hostess for the Welcome Wagon Organization there in the 1950s.
Her husband preceded her in death.
Survivors include son M. Gordon Shepherd, Jamestown; daughters Sarah Shepherd Lyon, Manassas, Va., and Mary Shepherd Seith, Irvine, Calif.; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; and one stepgreat-great-grandson.
Services: Graveside, 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Raleigh Memorial Park. Memorial service, 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Springmoor Life Care Center Auditorium.
