Morancie’s free throw wins it for Catawba women

BY HORACE BILLINGS
SALISBURY POST

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. — A free throw by Lynn Morancie with two seconds left gave Catawba’s nationally ranked Indians a hard-earned 67-66 victory over Tusculum in the South Atlantic Conference here Wednesday night.

Morancie, a 5-5 junior guard, was fouled shortly after the Pioneers had tied the score at 66-all on a 3-point goal by Kristen New with 17 seconds left to play.

Morancie was fouled as she drove down the middle of the court as time was running out. She made the first of two free throws, and that decided the contest.

Her free throw came at the right time. Tusculum got the rebound after Morancie missed the second free throw and moved the basketball to mid-court. New sank a long goal that didn’t count just a second after time had expired.

It was the 11th win against two losses for the Indians, ranked 17th nationally among Division II teams, against a pair of losses. It was their fourth straight win. It also gives them a 2-0 start in the SAC chase.

It was the second time the Indians, defending SAC champions, won with a comeback. They defeated Lenoir-Rhyne last Saturday by a second-half rally after trailing at intermission.

Coach John Duncan’s crew charged back to jump ahead by 49-48 at halfway point of the second half. It was a close battle down to Morancie’s winning free throw.
