Merle Hartline Barger
FAITH — Merle Hartline Barger, 87, Faith, died Monday (Jan. 7, 2002) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.
Born May 29, 1914, in Iredell County, Mrs. Barger, a daughter of the late Charles and Mary Litton Barger, was educated in the Iredell County schools. She retired from Cannon Mills plant 1, Kannapolis, where she worked in the washcloth and sheet departments.
She was an active member of Shiloh United Church of Christ as long as her health permitted.
Her husband, Fred Kluttz Barger, died Aug. 28, 1981.
Survivors include sons Fred Allen Barger, Arlington, Neb., Jimmy Lee Barger, Faith, and Randy J. Barger, Salisbury; daughter Patricia McCombs, Faith; brothers Frank Hartline, Ridgefield, S.C., and Charles Hartline, Cypress Heights, Calif.; sister Janie Kapral, Milford,Conn.; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, Shiloh United Church of Christ, conducted by the Rev. Lawrence Bolick. Burial, church cemetery.

Mosell S. Beane
LINWOOD — Mosell Smith Beane, 88, N.C. Hwy. 150 S., died Monday (Jan. 7, 2002) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.
Born July 26, 1913, in Davidson County, Mr. Beane was a son of Ardenis Beane and Lillith Mae Smith Beane. In 1975, he retired after 30 years from Dixie Furniture. He later worked as a security guard at N.C. Finishing Co., Spencer.
He was a member of Churchland Baptist Church, Masonic Lodge 473, the Scottish Rite, Charlotte, Oasis Shrine Temple, Charlotte, and Chapter 98, Order of the Eastern Star.
Survivors include wife Kathleen Hartley Beane; son Larry Wayne Beane, Lexington; brother Neil R. Beane, Mocksville; sisters Pauline Hendrix, Mocksville, Bonnie Jean Black, Winston-Salem, and Fannie Mae Younts, Lexington; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Jay Nathan Caldwell
The funeral will be Friday for Jay Nathan Caldwell, 74, Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation, who died Saturday (Jan. 5, 2002) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.
Born July 10, 1927, in Rowan County, Mr. Caldwell, a son of the late Levi and Stella Stewart Caldwell, attended Dunbar High School, East Spencer.
A veteran, he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a shipping and receiving foreman at Cone Mills.
He was a member of J.C.Price American Legion Post 107 and Gethsemane Missionary Baptist Church, where he was on the trustee and usher boards.
His wife, Ella Mae Bratcher Caldwell, died March 28, 2000.
Survivors include sons Derrick and Shawn Bratcher and Javon Caldwell, all of Salisbury, and Michael Bratcher, Hopewell, Va.; daughters Jeannine Holmes, St. Leonard,Md., and Felicia Cook, Washington, D.C.; brother Sylvester Caldwell, Baltimore, Md.; and 13 grandchildren.
Services: 12 p.m. Friday, Gethsemane Missionary Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. James L. Stowe. Burial, National Cemetery at Hefner VA Medical Center, Salisbury. Military rites by Rowan County Veterans Council.
Visitation: 11 a.m.-noon Friday at the church. At other times the family will be at the home at 520 S. Clay St.

Laura G. Dishman
MOUNT ULLA — Laura Goodson Dishman, 71, Dishman Road, died Tuesday (Jan. 8, 2002) at Brian Health and Rehabilitation Center, Mooresville.
Born Nov. 20, 1930, in Iredell County, Mrs. Dishman, the daughter of the late Otis O. and Jessie B. Duckworth Goodson, was a 1950 graduate of Brawley High School.
She retired as an inspector with Burlington Industries, Mooresville, after 38 years. She was a member of Back Creek Presbyterian Church.
Her husband, Kenneth E. Dishman, preceded her in death.
Survivors include children Ron Dishman, Salisbury, Renaye D. Jarrett, Concord, Denise D. Ervin, Mooresville, and Patricia D. McDaniel, Cross Hill, S.C.; brothers Harvey Goodson, Davidson, and John Goodman, Mooresville; sisters Elizabeth Brooks, Mooresville, and Delores Kiser, Mount Ulla; 15 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Jessie P. Melton
GREENVILLE, S.C. — Jessie Pittman Melton, 89, formerly of East Hillcrest Drive, died Jan. 8, 2002, at Belaire Place.
Born in Tybee Island, Ga., Mrs. Melton, the daughter of the late Henry Speed and Argyle Blalock Pittman, was reared in Salisbury, N.C. She retired from Country Manor. Earlier, she was employed as an interior designer with Piedmont Paint and Wallpaper.
She was a locally known artist and a member of Buncombe Street United Methodist Church.
Her husband, Dewey P. Melton, and a daughter, Edna Anne Melton Garrett, preceded her in death.
Survivors include three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Annie Bernice Parker
EAST SPENCER — The funeral will be Friday for Annie Bernice Parker, 83, 1565 N.Long St., who died Sunday (Jan. 6, 2002) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, after a period of serious illness.
Born May 11, 1918, in East Spencer, Ms. Parker was a daughter of the late Fred Harrison and Mattie Clement Parker. She was a Dunbar High School graduate and a 1938 graduate of Livingstone College.
Retired after 44 years as an educator, she was employed with the Salisbury Rowan School System. She was a lifelong member of New Hope AME Zion Church, Parent Body Missionary, the board of trustees and a vacation Bible school teacher. In 1997, she was honored as Woman of the Year.
She is survived by her nephews.

Born Aug. 13, 1917, in Fairbank, Iowa, Mr. Reinhold, a son of the late Carl Oscar and Nora Decker Reinhold, was educated in the Medford, Wisc., schools.
Since retiring as a dairy farmer, he has worked in the security field in Iowa and Florida. A former member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Medford, Wisc., he was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Salisbury and Knights of Columbus.

Mr. Shrewsbury was employed as a machine operator with Clark Equipment, Statesville. He was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church, Advance.

Dr. Richard Wright Jr.
Dr. Richard Brandon Wright Jr., 85, Salisbury, died Tuesday (Jan. 8, 2002) at Regency Hospital, Florence, S.C.
Born June 6, 1916, in Salisbury, Dr. Wright was a son of the late Richard Brandon and Ida Mae Wright. He was a graduate of Boyden High School.
In 1938, he graduated with a bachelor of science degree from Davidson College, which he attended on a music scholarship. He graduated from Tulane University Medical School, New Orleans, La., in 1942 and served his internship at City Hospital, Winston-Salem.
During World War II, he served from 1943-1946 with the U.S. Army Air Force as a Major in the Medical Corps. He was a surgeon with the 337th in the Pacific Theater. While in the military, he was selected as a top ranking junior medical officer. He took advanced courses in tropical medicine at Walter Reed Hospital, Washington D.C. Dr. Wright served with the Medical Corps in Okinawa and Iwo Jima.
Dr. Wright began his medical career in 1946. He practiced general family practice and anesthesiology in Salisbury for over 40 years. In 1960, he was named chief of staff at Rowan Regional Medical Center. He was the coroner for Rowan County from 1950-1962.
In 1973, he was named to the American Academy of Family Physicians. He was a member of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and the Association of Military Surgeons of the United States. A past president of the Rowan County Chapter of the Academy of General Practice, he was a fellow of the American College of Anesthesiologists and held membership in the American Society of Anesthesiologists; American Academy of General Practice; Southern Medical Society; and North Carolina State Medical Society.
In 1956, he was vice president of the North Carolina State Academy of General Practice. He was president of Rowan-Davie County Academy of General Practice in 1961.
Dr. Wright was a member of the advisory committee of the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Awards. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Salisbury.
His wife, Marjorie Bradley Wright, died Oct. 28, 1983.
Survivors include son Richard “Dick” Brandon Wright III, Raleigh; daughters Sandra Wright Bridgers, Florence, S.C., Susan Wright, Richmond, Va., and Heather Wright, Chicago, Ill.; and four grandchildren.
