Louis A. Brown

STATESVILLE — Louis Alexander Brown, 87, formerly of East Front Street, died Saturday (Jan. 5, 2002) at N.C. Memorial Hospital, Chapel Hill.

Mr. Brown published a history of the Confederate military prison at Salisbury, “The Salisbury Prison, A case Study of Confederate Military Prisons, 1861-1865.” The book was published with a grant from the Johnson Foundation of Salisbury.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Forest Park PresbyterianChurch. Burial, Concord Presbyterian Church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Nicholson Funeral Home.

Jay Nathan Caldwell

Jay Nathan Caldwell, 74, Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation, died Saturday (Jan. 5, 2002) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Rowan Funeral Service is in charge.

 

Mary G. Edmonds

LEXINGTON — Mary Graham Edmonds, 56, William Lane, died Sunday (Jan. 6, 2002) at Lexington Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Mount Carmel Freewill Baptist Church. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Davidson Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home on William Lane.

 

Maude B. Everhart

LEXINGTON — Maude Bullaboy Everhart, 93, Hillcrest Circle, died Sunday (Jan. 6, 2002) at her home from a brief illness.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Davidson Funeral Home chapel. Burial, Lexington City Cemetery.

Visitation: 1-2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home on Hillcrest Circle.

‘G.S.’ Abernathy Jr.

Grier Summerell “G.S.” Abernathy Jr., 68, Salisbury, died Monday (Jan. 7, 2002) at his home.

Born Oct. 27, 1933, in Rowan County, Mr. Abernathy, a son of the late Grier Summerell “Sump” and Margie Cauble Abernathy, was educated at Faith School, Faith.

He had been a meat cutter for A&P and Food Lion. He drove a truck for Akers Motor Line and retired as a truck driver from Food Lion.

A member of Christiana Lutheran Church, he was a former member of the church council and a former building and grounds committee co-chairman. He was a member of Lutheran Men in Mission.

Survivors include wife Dorothy Lowder Abernathy, whom he married April 10, 1976; sons Kenneth Doyle Abernathy, Clearwater, Fla., and Kelly Dean Abernathy, Salisbury; stepdaughters Judy Jones, Faith, and Joy Wilson, Woodleaf; brother Gene Abernathy, Salisbury; sister Betty Ann Abernathy Bare, Salisbury; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Christiana Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Carl M. Haynes. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Powles Funeral Home, Rockwell, and from 1:30-2 p.m. Wednesday at the church. At other times, the family will be at the home.

Joyce Yates Henry

KANNAPOLIS — Joyce Colleen Yates Henry, 72, 1007 Kentucky St., died Monday (Jan. 7, 2002) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born June 10, 1929, in Cabarrus County, Mrs. Henry was a daughter of the late W.P. “Bill” and Fannie Clampett Yates. She was educated in the Kannapolis city schools.

A member of First Street Baptist Church, Concord, she was a homemaker.

Her husband,Rufus Henry, died in 1999.

Survivors include son William “Bill”Henry, Kannapolis; daughters Joyce McCool and Joan Honeycutt, both of Kannapolis; brothers Price and Wayne Yates, both of Kannapolis; sister Willie Mae Palmer, Kannapolis; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Whitley’s Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Leon Smith.Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 2-3:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.At other times the family will be at the home of daughter Joyce McCool, 1005 Kentucky St.

Naomi Frances Hill

LEXINGTON — Naomi Frances KennonHill, 68, Cedar Grove Drive, died Sunday (Jan. 6, 2002) at Lexington Memorial Hospital after several years of declining health.

Services: Graveside, 3 p.m. today, Forest Hill Memorial Park.

Visitation: 2-3 p.m. today, Davidson Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home on Cedar Grove Drive.

 

Sallie T. Hopkins

NEW LONDON — Sallie Talbert Hopkins, 91, 38161 Hopkins Road, died Sunday (Jan. 6, 2002) at Britthaven of Piedmont, Albemarle.

Born March 7, 1910, in Stanly County, Mrs. Hopkins was a daughter of the late Press Talbert and Celia Randall Talbert Fraley. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include sisters Ruby Snotherly, New London, and Minnie Howard, Denton.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Hartsell Funeral Home chapel, Albemarle, conducted by the Rev. Boyd Joyce. Burial, Bethel United Methodist Church cemetery.

Visitation: 12:30-2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of sister Ruby Snotherly, 44550 Ledbetter Road.

 

Chase Cameron King

MOORESVILLE — Chase Cameron King, 21, 1145 Mill Chase Circle, died Saturday (Jan. 5, 2002).

Born April 2, 1980, in Cabarrus County, Mr. King was a son of Darlene Lovett King and Jack G. King Jr. of Kannapolis. He was employed with T &T Moving Systems, Charlotte, and helped part-time with his father-in-law’s business, Paramount Builders, China Grove.

He attended Mount Zion First Freewill Baptist Church, Kannapolis.

Survivors, in addition to his parents, include wife Jamie Bond King; son Izaac King, of the home; sister Shelley Nicole King, Kannapolis; paternal grandfather Edward Lovett, Kannapolis.

Services: 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Mount Zion First Freewill Baptist Church, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Joe Rahme and the Rev. Bill Coughlin. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis.

Lois G. Lanaghan

CONCORD — The funeral will be Thursday for Lois Ann Guyeske Lanaghan, 65, 651 Main St., who died Sunday (Jan. 6, 2002) at NorthEast Medical Center.

Born June 30, 1936, in Elyria,Ohio, Mrs. Lanaghan, a daughter of the late Herman and Helen O’Neil Guyeske, was educated in the Elyria, Ohio, schools. She was a homemaker and a member of Solid Rock Baptist Church, China Grove.

Survivors include husband JackLeroy Lanahan, Concord; sons Lenny Lanaghan, China Grove, and Jack Lanaghan Jr., Kannapolis; daughters Kathy Cole, China Grove, and Patty Covak, North Olmstead, Ohio; brother Bob Guyeske, North Ridgeville, Ohio; sister Lila Beckloff,Elyria,Ohio; and four grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday,Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home chapel, China Grove, conducted by the Rev. Bobby Bailey. Burial, Sunset Cemetery, Kannapolis.

Roger Dale Mayhew

MOCKSVILLE — Roger Dale Mayhew, 57, Pool Drive, died Monday (Jan. 7, 2002) at Forsyth Medical Center, Winston-Salem.

A native of Forsyth County, Mr. Mayhew was a son of Leonard Mayhew and the late Margaret Myers Mayhew. He was a member of Yadkin Valley Baptist Church, Advance, and an employee at Trimark Foodcraft, Winston-Salem.

Survivors, in addition to his father, include wife of 37 years Bonnie Ratledge Mayhew; son Shannon Mayhew, Hickory; daughter Theresa Church, Harmony; brothers Bob Mayhew, Wilmington, L.C. Mayhew, Georgia, and Wayne and David Mayhew, both of Harmony; and sisters Betty Lou Bledsoe and Margie Gobble, Mocksville, and Shirley Long, Advance.

Services: Tonight after the 6:30-8:30 p.m. visitation at Yadkin Valley Baptist Church, Advance. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, in the church cemetery.

Visitation: 6:30-8:30 tonight at the church.

Miles West Moss

KANNAPOLIS — Miles West Moss, 84, 1204 Lane St., died Monday (Jan. 7, 2002) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born Aug. 10, 1917, in Catawba County, Mr. Moss was a son of the late Stamey Enoch and Nannie Lou Brown Moss. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II.

An active member of Jackson Park United Methodist Church for over 50 years, he retired in 1979 after 20 years as a finance manager with Blazer Financial Services.

Survivors include wife of 64 years Bertha Braswell Moss; son Michael West Moss, Germany; daughter Cherie Milene Moss, Concord; brother Marshall Moss, Taylorsville; and two grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Whitley’s Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Skipper Watwood.Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 12:30-2 p.m Wednesday at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home on Lane Street.

Nellie Nifong

LEXINGTON — Nellie “Nan” McAbee Nifong, 64, Lanier Drive, died Sunday (Jan. 6, 2002) at Forsyth Medical Center after six months of serious illness.

Services: Graveside, 11 a.m. Wednesday, Bethesda United Methodist Church cemetery.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Davidson Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home on Lanier Drive.

Dennis A. Peoples

CLEVELAND — The funeral will be Wednesday for Dennis Allen Peoples, 42, 260 Indian Springs Road, who died Saturday (Jan. 5, 2002) at his home.

Born Jan. 23, 1959, in Davie County, Mr. Peoples was a son of Helen Mitchell Peoples, Salisbury, and the late William Silas Peoples. He was a graduate of Salisbury High School and an Eagle Scout.

A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he served four years aboard the USSDwight D. Eisenhower. He was employed at Jim’s Barbecue, Salisbury.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include wife Cynthia Darlene Marlow Peoples; brothers William S. Peoples Jr., Salisbury, Randy Dean Peoples, Rockwell, and James Edward Peoples, Morganton, W.Va.; and sister Carol P. Godwin, Longwood, Fla.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Summersett Funeral Home chapel, Salisbury, conducted by the Rev. Bruce Graham, pastor, Canaan Baptist Church. The body will be cremated.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.

Edna W. Swicegood

LEXINGTON —Edna Ann Williams Swicegood, 88, 4609 S. N.C. Hwy. 150, died Sunday (Jan. 6, 2002) at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, St. Luke’s Lutheran Church.

‘Jimmy’ Lee Younts III

LEXINGTON — James “Jimmy” Lee Younts III, 38, Jeanette Drive, died Sunday (Jan. 6, 2002) at Wake Forest Baptist MedicalCenter from injuries sustained in an auto accident.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, Davidson Funeral Home chapel. Burial, Forest Hill Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of George and Judy Huffman, 379 Swicegood-Waitman Road.

 

Ronald ‘Ronnie’ Dyer

GOLD HILL — The funeral will be Thursday for Ronald Louis “Ronnie” Dyer, 38, Gold Hill, who died Sunday (Jan. 6, 2002) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Born Jan. 28, 1963, in New Britain, Conn., Mr. Dyer was a son of Sandra Allen Rummage, Gold Hill. He was educated in the New Britain, Conn., schools.

A Catholic, he worked at FoodLion Inc. as long as his health permitted.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include brothers Ed Dyer, New Britain, Conn., and John Kockanowski, Bristol, Conn.; stepfather Bill Rummage,Gold Hill; and step-grandparents Clyde and Nancy Rummage,Gold Hill.
