John Greene Benson
MOCKSVILLE — John Greene Benson, 82, of Lexington Road, died Friday (Jan. 4, 2002) at Forsyth Medical Center.
He was born in Davie County to the late Janes Isabelle Thompson and Felix K. Benson.
He was employed with J.P. Milling Co. as a salesman. He was of the Baptist faith.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Lucille Smith Benson, six brothers and three sisters.
Survivors include son Mark Benson, Mocksville; brother William H. Benson, Charlotte; sister Dorothy B. Keller, Mocksville; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services: A graveside service will be held today at Rose Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Darrell Cox and the Rev. Rex Podunvac.
Visitation: Today at Davie Funeral Service, Inc. from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and also at the home of Sharon Lashmit, Salisbury Street.
Memorials: Trinity Baptist Church Building Fund, 2722 US Hwy 601 S., Mocksville, NC.
Leonard Odell Collette
MOCKSVILLE — Leonard Odell Collette, 74, of Yadkinville Road, died Saturday (Jan. 5, 2002) at his residence.

William Gaither
MOCKSVILLE — William Eugene Gaither, 70, of 1938 Hwy. 64 East, died Thursday (Jan. 3, 2002) at the Katie B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston Salem after being seriously ill for several weeks and in declining health for one year.
Born March 17, 1931, in Mocksville, he was the son of the late Frank E. and Ruth Barker Gaither. He was a graduate of Davie County Training School and attended St. Augustine College and NC A & T State University in Greensboro.
He retired from Wachovia Bank and Trust in Winston Salem.
A member of St. John’s AME Zion Church, he was chairman of the Trustee Board, a member of the Usher Board and Men’s Booster Club. He was also a member of Corinthians Lodge #17, PHA and the Davie County Chapter of the NAACP.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Survivors include wife, Magalene Dulin Gaither, of the home; step-son Eric Hudson Sr., Salisbury; step-daughter Shanlon Hudson, Winston Salem; brothers Nathaniel Williams, Mocksville, Bishop Milton Williams, Maryland, and Barry Williams, Greensboro; sisters Brenda White, Kernsville, NC, and Julia Banks, Greensboro; three step-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.
Services: 3 pm. Tuesday at St. John AME Zion Church, Mocksville, conducted by the Rev. Anthony Freeman, pastor., and the Rev. Dr. Milton White, eulogist. Burial will be at the church cemetery.
Visitation: 2:15 p.m. Tuesday at the church before the service.

KANNAPOLIS — Robert Lee “Rabbit” Harrington, 86, of 515 Spring Garden Ave., died Saturday (Jan. 5, 2002) at NorthEast Medical Center.

Harve Hartford
CLEVELAND — Harve Clarence Hartford, 68, of Cleveland, died Thursday (Jan. 3, 2002) at his residence after a period of declining health.
Born Feb. 19, 1933, in Appalachia, Va., he was the son of the late Thomas Jackson and Kathleen Reynolds Webb Hartford.
A veteran of the U.S. Army, he was a union contractor painter. He was also formerly employed with the Rowan County Parks and Recreation. He attended Northwest Salisbury Kingdom hall of Jehovah’s Witness.
He is survived by his wife, Helen Louise Rigsby Hartford of the home; sons Roy Allen Hartford, Glen Burnie, Md., John White Hartford, Bedford, Va., and Patrick Earl Hartford, Pasadena, Md.; daughters Joan McDevitt, Baltimore, Md., Kathy Sue Woodworth and Pamela Gaye Hartford, both of Salisbury; brothers Roy Lee Hartford, Gold Hill, and Bruce Allen Hartford, Cookeville, Tenn.; sisters Margaret Lowery, Rockwell, and Linda Hartford, Bakersville, Ca.; and nine grandchildren.
Services: 1 p.m. Monday at Northwest Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness, on Hurley School Road, conducted by Mr. Jerry Blackwell. Mr. Hartford will be cremated.
Visitation: There will be no visitation. The family will be at the home in Cleveland.
