John H. Barringer
LITTLE RIVER, S.C. — Funeral services will be held Jan. 19 for John H. Barringer, 66, Little River, a native of Granite Quarry, N.C., who died Monday (Dec. 17, 2001).
Mr. Barringer, a son of the late Virgil and Jane Barringer, was a veteran of the U.S.Navy.
He retired from Kinney Shoes and Charleston Shipyard.He was a past member of Charleston Elks, Charleston Moose Lodge, Salisbury Moose Lodge, Salisbury, N.C., and American Legion Post 147, James Island.
Survivors include wife Jo Ann Sawyer Barringer; sons Ronnie Joe Hardee, Tabor City, N.C., and William C. Hardee, Charleston; brother George C. Barringer, Hackensack, N.J.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services: Memorial, 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 19 on Folly Beach Pier. Lee Funeral Home is in charge.

Margaret N. Carter
CONCORD — Funeral services for Margaret N. Carter have been postponed until Friday at Hartsell Funeral Home.
Visitation has been moved to Friday also, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home.
Gertrude L. Dyson
CHINA GROVE — The funeral will be Friday for Gertrude Lois Orbison Dyson, 94, 217 W. Vance St., who died Wednesday (Jan. 2, 2002) at Liberty Commons Nursing Home.
Born March 21, 1907, in Iredell County, Mrs. Dyson was a daughter of the late John and Sally Vendora Huffman Orbison.
Educated in the Iredell County schools, she retired from Cannon Mills. She was a member of VFW Post 3006 and First United Methodist Church, where she was a member of Adult Bible Sunday School Class.
Mrs. Dyson was the oldest member of the South Rowan Historical Society.
Her husband, Grover McCoy Dyson, who she married on Nov. 16, 1925, died in 1983, and son Graham Dyson died in 1990.
Survivors include son Gilbert “Tunnie” Dyson, Salisbury; brothers Fred Orbison, Landis, and Allen Orbison, Charlotte; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, First United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Rusty Inman and the Rev. Jennifer Kerns. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park.
Visitation: 7-8:30 p.m. Friday, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove.

Helen F. Elwood
KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Friday for Helen Furr Elwood, 403 N. East Ave., who died Tuesday (Jan. 1, 2002) at Avante of Concord.
Born June 7, 1926, in Cabarrus County, Mrs. Elwood, a daughter of the late George P. and Minnie Clontz Furr, was a member of Sunrise Freewill Baptist Church. She retired from Cannon Mills Co. Plant 4 card room.
Her husband,Ralph Gilbert Elwood, died in 1995.
Survivors include daughter Carol Sue Stegall, Kannapolis; sons Ralph “Sonny” Elwood, Quincy, Mass., and Ronnie Elwood, Kannapolis; half sister Frances Lefler, Kannapolis; half brother George Tucker, Kannapolis; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Services: 11 a.m.Friday, Whitley’s Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Harry Ferguson. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park, China Grove.
Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the home on North East Avenue.

Albert Glenn Harwood
ALBEMARLE — Albert Glenn Harwood, 76, 120 S. Hill Ave., died Wednesday (Jan. 2, 2002) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.
Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, South Albemarle Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Jesse Dennis. Burial, Fairview Memorial Park with military rites by Stanly County DAV Ritual Team.

‘DJ Nick’ Mando
MOCKSVILLE — The funeral will be Friday for Dominic J. “DJ Nick” Mando, 84, North Main Street, who died Wednesday (Jan. 2, 2002) at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, Winston-Salem.
Born Jan. 13, 1917, in Erie, Pa., Mr. Mando was a son of the late Patrick and Louisa Penna Mando. A graduate of East High School, Erie, Pa., and Lenoir-Rhyne College, he was a teacher at Rural Hall and Mocksville High School. He worked at C.C. Sanford Co. until he opened his own plumbing and heating business. He retired in 1981 as assistant principal at Davie County High School.
Mr. Mando was a former member of the Mocksville Town Board and served as mayor for 30 years. He was a charter member of Mocksville Rotary Club and Mocksville Jaycees. A longtime member of First Presbyterian Church, he served as deacon, elder and teacher.
Survivors include Ethel Ledford Mando, his wife of 60 years; son Joseph A. Mando, Mocksville; daughter Jane M. Meeks, Athens, Ga.; sisters Mathilda M. Turano, Alice M. Rajs and Elinora Mando, all of Hemet, Calif.; and four grandchildren.
Services: Memorial service, 11 a.m. Friday, First Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. Neal Carter. Private burial, Rose Cemetery.

MOORESVILLE — Frances June Oates, 79, Landis Highway, died Wednesday (Jan. 2, 2002) at her home.

KANNAPOLIS — John Ransom Puntch, 2102 Bertha St., died Wednesday (Jan. 2, 2002) at NorthEast Medical Center.

Mary Ellen Smoot
The funeral will be Friday for Mary Ellen Kee Bryant Smoot, 72, 820 Old Concord Road, who died Monday (Dec. 31, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after two months of serious illness.
Born Nov. 19, 1929, in Rowan County, Mrs. Smoot, a daughter of the late Florence and George Kee, was a graduate of J.C. Price High School.
She retired from American and Efird, where she was employed as a winder. A member of Antioch Baptist Church, Granite Quarry, she sang in the church choir.
Her husband, the Rev. Samuel Smoot, died Jan. 23, 2000.
Survivors include stepmother Queena Mae Lomax Kee, Newark, N.J.; sons Robert Lee Bryant and Johnny Matthew Smoot, both of Salisbury, and the Rev. Bernard P. Smoot, Orange Park, Fla.; daughter Zandra Louise Bryant Byrd, Cleveland; brothers George Kee Jr., Durham, and Victor Kee, New Jersey; sisters Berniceand Miriam Kee, both of Newark, N.J.; seven grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
Services: 1 p.m. Friday, Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Rufus Wyatt. Burial, U.S. National Cemetery.
Visitation: 12:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the home of granddaughter Ebony Bryant, 224-B Carolina Blvd., Salisbury.
