Lucille Rhoades Ayers

LEXINGTON — Lucille “Granny” Rhoades Ayers, 72, Pineland Avenue, died Tuesday (Jan. 1, 2002).

Services: 11 a.m. Friday, Piedmont Funeral Home chapel.

Visitation: 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

 

Willie Clyde Barber

EAST SPENCER — The funeral will be Friday for Willie Clyde Barber, 90, 1008 Hunt Lane, who died Sunday (Dec. 30, 2001) at 203 Clement St., Cleveland, after several days of serious illness.

Born Aug. 13, 1911, in Great Falls, S.C., Mr. Barber was a son of the late Rev. Hattress and Daisy McCollough Barber. He was educated in the Great Falls, S.C., schools and retired from Norfolk Southern.

A member of Southern City Tabernacle AME Zion Church, he was on the trustee board and lay council.

His wife, Hager Patterson Barber, died Nov. 22, 1985.

Survivors include son William “Billy” Barbour, Philadelphia,Pa.; daughters Daisy Barbour, New York City, and Lula Mae Barbour, Oldham, N.Y.; brother Hattress Barbour, New York City; sisters Chappelle Holman, East Spencer,and Maddie Gibson, Cleveland; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services: 2:30 p.m. Friday, Southern City Tabernacle AME Zion Church, conducted by the Rev. Rollins Graham. Burial, Oakwood Cemetery, Salisbury.

Visitation: 2 p.m.Friday at the church. At other times, the family will be at the home of Chappelle Holman, 1005 Hunt’s Lane.

Hoyle Bost

MOORESVILLE — William Hoyle Bost, 78, 333 Field Trace Road, died Tuesday (Jan. 1 2002) at Liberty Commons Nursing and Rehabilitation.

Amie Lea Brown

WOODLEAF — Amie Lea Brown, 3-month-old daughter of James Anthony and Lela McGuire Brown, 1995 Hwy. 801, died Sunday (Dec. 30, 2001) at her home.

Survivors, in addition to her parents, include brother Michael Anthony Brown, of the home; sisters Cassidy Lynn and Ashley Brenna Brown, both of the home; maternal grandparents Robert and Esther Dickerson, Faith, and Billy and Peggy Smith, China Grove; paternal grandmother Amie Lea Brown, Salisbury; great-grandmother Herma Claypoole, Faith; great-great-grandmother Ola Mae McGuire,Beckley,W.Va.

Elizabeth Chockley

Private funeral services will be held at a later date for Elizabeth Ruth Luthi (Luther) Chockley, 91, 851 Mocksville Ave., who died Monday (Dec. 31, 2001) at her home.

Born Dec. 20, 1910, in Nashville, Tenn., Mrs. Chockley was a daughter of the late Edward Charles Luthi and Mary Ann Roser Luthi (Luther). She was educated in the Rutherford and Bedford county schools.

A homemaker and an artist, she was a member of Milford Hills United Methodist Church.

Her husband,Charles Lincoln Chockley, died in 1981.

Survivors include daughter Barbara C. Lockert, Salisbury; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The body will be cremated and services held at a later date at Spring Hill Cemetery in Nashville,Tenn.

MOORESVILLE — Charles Stephen Edwards, 63, Mooresville, died Monday (Dec. 31, 2001).

KANNAPOLIS — Helen Furr Elwood, 75, formerly of 403 N.E. Ave., died Tuesday (Jan. 1, 2002) at Avanté at Concord.

Harry Gaither

CHINA GROVE — The funeral will be Thursday for Harry Douglas Gaither, 82, 230 Homer Corriher Road, who died Tuesday (Jan. 1, 2002) at Genesis ElderCare, Salisbury, after several years of declining health.

Born Feb. 17, 1919, in Rowan County, Mr. Gaither was a son of the late Clarence Edward and Maggie Graham Gaither. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served during World War II and was a member of VFW Post 8989.

Retired after 47 years from Cannon Mills No. 6 weave room, he was a member of First United Methodist Church,Landis.

Survivors include wife of 57 years Allene Self Gaither; daughter Yvonne Gaither Birdsong, Winston-Salem; son Douglas Wayne Gaither,Oriental; sister Margaret Fisher,Charlotte; brother Clarence E. Gaither Jr., Winston-Salem; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Richard ‘Dick’ Hale

The funeral will be Friday for Richard “Dick” Morrison Hale, 87, Salisbury, who died Monday (Dec. 31, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after two months of serious illness.

Born Jan. 6, 1914, in Roanoke County, Va., Mr. Hale was a son of the late W. Abe and Ella Taylor Hale. He was educated in the Rowan County schools and was a graduate of the University of Virginia, where he received a civil engineering degree.

A veteran of the U.S.Army, he served during World War II and retired from the U.S. Coast Guard Civil Service after 36 years. He was a Lutheran.

Survivors include wife Lucy Troutman Bailey Hale; son Richard Clark Hale, Charlottesville, Va.; stepsons Troy Bailey, Salisbury, Frank Bailey, Spencer, and Robert Bailey, Fairfield,Calif.; brother Benjamin D. Hale, Glendale, Calif.; sisters Emolyn Grubb, Miami, Fla., Ruth Magney, Chandler, Ariz., Audrey Edwards, Charlotte, and Mae Hale and Mildred Kelley, both of Los Angeles, Calif.; five stepgrandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.

Vera Mae McAnulty

ALBEMARLE — Vera Mae White McAnulty, 79, 416 Coble Ave., died Monday (Dec. 31, 2001) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Hartsell Funeral Home chapel. Burial, Stanly Gardens of Memory.

Visitation: 12:30-2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the home on Coble Avenue.

 

Richard J. Rendleman

uichard James Rendleman, 81, Salisbury, died Tuesday (Jan. 1, 2002) at his home after a 9-month illness of leukemia.

Born Nov. 21, 1920, in Salisbury, Mr. Rendleman was the son of the late John Luther and Allie B. Ware Rendleman. He graduated from Boyden High School in 1937 and Catawba College in 1941. He was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church.

During World War II, he was a lieutenant with the U.S. Navy at Port Chicago, Calif., and in the Pacific Theatre.

He was on the board of directors and vice president of sales with Proctor Chemical Co. He was later with National Starch and Chemical Co. until he retired. Active in commercial real estate development, he was a member of the board of directors of Merritt Innes Corp.

Mr. Rendleman was president of the Country Club of Salisbury and recently completed a term on the board of directors. He was an advisor to the architect and board during the recent renovation of the back nine.

An avid golfer, he scored 11 holes in one and held 10 club championships. He was also a member of The Linville Golf Club. From 1938 to 1941, he was on the Catawba College golf team and led the team to the conference championship in 1940.

Mr. Rendleman qualified for the U.S. Open Championship in 1948 and advanced to the third round to match play in the USGAAmateur Championship in 1951. He was credited with saving the Labor Day Memorial Tournament during the 1960s, an event he chaired and which he and his partner won six times.

In 1993, he was honored by Catawba College with the Distinguished Alumnus Award and in 1987 was the first golfer to be inducted into the Catawba College Sports Hall of Fame. A supporter of the Catawba College men’s golf team, the college named its annual tournament in his honor.

Since its beginning in 1974, Mr. Rendleman was a member of the board of directors of The Proctor Foundation. He was a past member of the Catawba College Wind Ensemble.

Survivors include wife Patricia Proctor Rendleman; sons Richard J. Rendleman Jr., Raleigh, and John Proctor Rendleman, Wilmington; daughter Patricia Proctor Rendleman, New York City; sister Allie B. Carty, Rosemont, Pa.; brother William Jacob Rendleman,Tampa, Fla.; and two grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, First United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Thomas Griffis. Burial, Chestnut Hill Cemetery.

Mae Daniels Rogers

The funeral will be Thursday for Mae Daniels Rogers, 95, Unity Church Road, who died Monday (Dec. 31, 2001) at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center,Mooresville, after three months of declining health.

Born Sept. 11, 1906, in Iredell County, Mrs. Rogers was a daughter of the late Silas Nicator and Lulu Eller Daniels. She retired from Cannon Mills Plant 1 after 45 years.

She was the oldest member of Unity United Methodist Church.

Her husband, Gillie Jerome Rogers, died May 17, 1978.

Survivors include daughter Corine R. Self, Kannapolis; brothers Arthur B. and Carl E. Daniels, both of Mooresville; one grandson; and two great-grandsons.

Services: 3 p.m. Thursday, Unity United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Carl Settle. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 2-3 p.m. Thursday at the church.

KANNAPOLIS — P.W. Sipe, 86, 303 W. 22nd St., died Wednesday (Jan. 2, 2002).

Elizabeth M. Steele

The funeral will be Friday for Elizabeth McNeely Steele, 85, Charlotte, formerly of Salisbury, who died Monday (Dec. 31, 2001) at Presbyterian Matthews Hospital in Charlotte.

Born June 14, 1916, in Cherryville, Mrs. Steele, a daughter of the late Samuel E. and Nell Maxwell McNeely, was a graduate of Cleveland High School. She attended Appalachian State Teachers College in Boone, where she majored in home economics and played girls basketball. She was Miss Cleveland in 1934.

A long-time Salisbury resident, she attended Park Avenue United Methodist Church, where she was in charge of the nursery for several years.

Her husband, Carl Fraley Steele, died Aug. 6, 1990.

Survivors include son Carl F. “Butch” Steele, Charlotte; daughters Elizabeth “Maxie” Swindler, Carole Eagle and Sandra Bradshaw, all of Charlotte; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday, Third Creek Presbyterian Church, Cleveland., conducted by the Rev. S. David Carriker. Burial, church cemetery.
