Roger D. Bateman

LEXINGTON — Roger Dan Bateman, 61, Lexington, died Sunday (Dec. 30, 2001) at his home.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Davidson Funeral Home chapel. Burial, Parklawn Memorial Gardens.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight at the funeral home.

 

Mary Kathryn Brooks

ROCKWELL — Mary Kathryn Kuykendall Brooks, 87, Rockwell, died Monday (Dec. 31, 2001) at the home of a daughter.

Born March 9, 1914, in Sturgis, Ky., Mrs. Brooks was a daughter of the late Robert H. and Laura Workman Kuykendall.

Educated in the Sturgis, Ky., schools, she graduated from Sturgis High School and was a homemaker. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Sturgis, Ky., where she sang in the choir.

Her husband, Harry B. Brooks, died Dec. 31, 1998.

Survivors include daughters H.K. Gaster, Rockwell, and Berry B. Craig, Knoxville, Tenn.; brother Robert Kuykendall Jr., Sturgis, Ky.; and two grandchildren.

Services: A memorial service will be held at a later date. Burial, Pythian Ridge Cemetery, Sturgis, Ky.

Clifford L. Byerly

LEXINGTON — Clifford Lamson Byerly, 89, Frye Bridge Road, Clemmons, died Sunday (Dec. 30, 2001) at The Oaks at Forsyth.

Services: 3 p.m. Wednesday, Union Grove Baptist Church. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Davidson Funeral Home and at other times, at the home.

 

Ruth L. Chockley

Ruth L. Chockley, 91, Salisbury, died Monday (Dec. 31, 2001) at the home of her daughter, Barbara C. Lockert.

Evelyn L. Clifton

LEXINGTON — Doris Evelyn Locklair Clifton, 73, Breman Drive, died Monday (Dec. 31, 2001) at her home after a nine-month illness.

Services: Memorial, 2 p.m. Saturday, Trinity United Methodist Church.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Friday at the home on Breman Drive.

Marie Coley Corn

DURHAM — Marie C. Corn, 82, 231 Latta Road, died Sunday (Dec. 30, 2001) at Durham RegionalHospital.

Born in Stanly County to the late Bart J. and Lillian Coley, Mrs. Corn moved to Rockwell as a child and was educated in the Rockwell public schools.

Mrs. Corn had been a secretary and teacher’s assistant at Carrington Middle School, Durham, for many years and a member of Braggtown Baptist Church, where she served as church librarian for many years. She was a member of the King’s Daughters.

Her husband, Ray V. Corn, preceded her in death.

Survivors include daughter Debra C. Patterson, Chapel Hill; son Randall Corn, Beech Mountain; sisters Barbara C. Earnhardt and Ruth C. Peeler, both of Salisbury, Jewell C. Elium, Winston-Salem, and Frances C. Thompson, Charleston, S.C.; brother Ray H. Coley, Ormond Beach, Fla.; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Braggtown Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Scott Eaton. Burial, Maplewood Cemetery.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Clements Funeral Home.

Dr. Charles E. Cress

CHINA GROVE — Dr. Charles Edwin Cress, 67, died Sunday (Dec. 30, 2001) at Heartland/Manor Care, Lexington, S.C., after a lingering illness.

Son of the late J. Frank and Mary Patterson Cress of China Grove, Mr. Cress served in the Navy from 1956 to 1959 in Bermuda and Norfolk, Va. From Bermuda, he tracked the recovery of an Atlas space rocket containing a monkey. He served in the Naval Reserves, retiring as a lieutenant commander.

Cress received bachelor’s and master’s degrees from N.C. State University and a Ph.D. in statistics/plant breeding in 1965 from Iowa State University. He taught at Rutgers University and then at Michigan State University from 1966 until his retirement. He also served for three months at the Ag Institute in Rampur, Nepal.

In 1990, Mr. Cress received the Michigan Teaching Award. He was active in the Kiwanis and his church.

Survivors include wife Joan Cress, Okemos, Mich.; son Andrew Cress, Lexington, S.C.; daughter Cynthia Nipper, Lincoln, Neb.; brothers Duard and James Cress; sisters Louise Grubb, Pauline Grant, Frances Linn and Martha Williamson; and two grandchildren.

Services: 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Mount Zion United Church of Christ.

Thompson Funeral Home, West Columbia, S.C., is in charge.

 

Pauline Crisco

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Thursday for Pauline Trexler Crisco, 90, formerly of 2700 Woodsdale Ave., who died Sunday (Dec. 30, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord. A resident of Big Elm Nursing Center, she was in declining health for several years and seriously ill for a week.

Born Sept. 28, 1911, in Rowan County, Mrs. Crisco was a daughter of the late Wilburn Tildon and Atha Frances Snyder Trexler. In 1973, she retired from Cannon Mills plant 1 sheet department.

An active member of First Baptist Church, she was secretary of her Sunday school class. She was a member of Concordia Shrine 14 White Shrine.

Her husband of 51 years, Roy Mclver Crisco, died May 16, 1982.

Survivors include daughters Barbara Robinette, Kannapolis, and Gloria Drake, Bakersville; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, Lady’s Funeral Home chapel, conducted by Dr. Tom Cabaniss. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of daughter Barbara Robinette, 300 York Ave.

W. Dewey Frye

KANNAPOLIS — W. Dewey Frye, 74, 7600 Karriker Road, died Monday (Dec. 31, 2001) at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center, Mooresville.

Born July 9, 1927, in Cabarrus County, Mr.Frye, a son of the late Nash and Elizabeth Suther Frye, served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

In 1974, he retired due to ill health from Fiber Industries, Salisbury. He was a member of St. Enoch Lutheran Church, where he was a Scoutmaster in his earlier years.

Survivors include wife Faynell Freeze Frye; daughter Robbie Powell, Kannapolis; son Keith Frye, Stanly; brothers Luther and Craig Frye, both of Kannapolis, and Linn Frye, Norwood; sister Ruth Smith, Concord; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services: Memorial, 11 a.m. Wednesday, St. Enoch Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. John Mark Beam.

Visitation: 6:30-8:30 tonight, Whitley’s FuneralHome. At other times the family will be at the home on Karriker Road.

Harry Douglas Gaither

CHINA GROVE — Harry Douglas Gaither, 82, 230 Homer Corriher Road, died Tuesday (Jan. 1, 2002) at Genesis Elder Care, Salisbury.

Lady’s Funeral Home, Kannapolis, is in charge.

 

Mary E. Hillman

KANNAPOLIS — A private service will be held Wednesday for Mary Elizabeth Honeycutt Morgan Hillman, 73, 2704 Alexander St., who died Sunday (Dec. 30, 2001) at her home.

Born Jan. 17, 1928, in Iredell County, Mrs. Hillman was a daughter of the late Ira Henderson and Maude Overcash Honeycutt.

Educated in Rowan County, she retired as a sales clerk from Rose’s Department Store and was a member of God’s Church of Faith.

Her first husband, Fred Allen Morgan, died in 1968.

Survivors include husband Tommy Hillman; sons Steve Morgan, Lynchburg, Va., Jack Morgan, China Grove, and Leo Morgan and Charles “Bud” Rogers, both of Kannapolis; daughters Dianne Pittman, Kannapolis, and Linda Hartsell, Old Hickory, Tenn.; brother Albert Bostian, Concord; 16 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

Services: Private service, Wednesday, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove, conducted by the Rev. Jeff Upright. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Lelia ‘Mae’ Holland

The funeral will be Thursday for Lelia “Mae” Jackson Hosch Holland, 62, 623 Linn Lane, who died Sunday (Dec. 30, 2001) at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem.

Born Nov. 9, 1939, in Salisbury, Mrs. Holland was a daughter of the late Sylvester and Leatha Blackwell Jackson.

A graduate of Dunbar High School, East Spencer, she was a retired employee of Rowan Manufacturing and a member of Gethsemane Baptist Church.

Survivors include husband Johnny Holland Jr.; sons James Thomas Hosch Jr. and Amer Willie Hosch Sr., both of Salisbury; daughters Thelma Allen, Margaret Kelly, Marilyn Hosch, Sharon Coleman and Jill Gaither, all of Salisbury; brother Hubert Blackwell, Anaheim, Calif.; sisters Margaret Caldwell, Landis, and Clara Maxine Sadler, Brooklyn, N.Y.; 16 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services: 1 p.m. Thursday, Gethsemane Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. J.L. Stowe, pastor. Burial, National Cemetery, Hefner VA Medical Center.

Aaron Lee Lorch

NORWOOD — Aaron Lee Lorch, 72, 9364-B Allen Lee Road, died Monday (Dec. 31, 2001). He was the brother of Joseph Lorch Jr., Badin, and Barbara Lester and Bertha Andrews, both of Albemarle.

KANNAPOLIS — Mae Daniels Rogers, 95, Unity Church Road, died Monday (Dec. 31, 2001) at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center, Mooresville.

Mary Ellen Kee Bryant Smoot, 72, 820 Old Concord Road, died Monday (Dec. 31, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after a serious illness of two months.

Elizabeth M. Steele

Elizabeth McNeely Steele, 85, formerly of Salisbury, died Monday (Dec. 31, 2001) at Presbyterian Hospital, Matthews.

‘Frank’ Wagoner

The funeral will be Wednesday for James Franklin “Frank”Wagoner, 75, Salisbury, who died Saturday (Dec. 29, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born May 27, 1926, in Rowan County, Mr. Wagoner was a son of the late Clarence and Alice Shuping Wagoner. He was educated in the Rowan County schools and was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Retired from Cannon Mills, he attended Salisbury Church of God.

Survivors include wife Frances Morris Wagoner, whom he married July 9, 1949; son Johnny Wagoner, of the home; daughters Eunice Brown, Germanton, Frankie Taylor, Woodleaf, and Mary Foutz, Salisbury; 12 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Wednesday, Lyerly Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Joseph LaFrage, pastor, Salisbury Church of God, and the Rev. Billy Huffman, pastor, Parkdale Baptist Church. Burial, City Memorial Park. Military rites by Rowan County Veterans Council.

Carolyn H. Winfree

ALBEMARLE — Carolyn Louise Hatley Winfree, 59, 37320 Melton Road, died Sunday (Dec. 30, 2001) at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem.
