Sports briefs: Todd Parnell leaves Intimidators, Mueller steps in

The Kannapolis Intimidators lost their general manager, but it didn’t take them long to find a replacement.

Former GM Todd Parnell has accepted an executive position with the double-A Altoona Curve, and he will be replaced in Kannapolis by Tim Mueller, the team’s director of sales and marketing.

Mueller, 28, worked for the Fayetteville Generals and Cape Fear Crocs before arriving in Kannapolis in 2000.

“Tim is a tremendous baseball executive that I know will combine his talents and desire with those of this extremely capable, experienced staff to take this team to the next level,”Parnell said.

The Intimidators also named Mike Pacheco as their director of media relations and broadcasting. Jamie Pruitt has been promoted to the assistant general manager for stadium operations, while David Spano will be the director of ticket operations.

  • All-NPC wrestling

West Rowan and East Rowan combined to place seven wrestlers on the NPC all-conference list.

The Falcons were represented by Kyle Riddenhour (103 pounds), Brent Painther (125), Joel Hopler (135), Brandon McCarty (140) and Charlie Aldridge (215).

Mustangs that made the list were Caleb Kittrell (130) and state champion Hunter Land (171).

  • Playoff tickets

Tickets for West Rowan’s second-round playoff game tonight cost $5. No passes are allowed except North Carolina coaches, principal and superintendent passes.

  • West softball rolls over Raiders

LANDIS — West Rowan’s girls softball team scored seven runs in the second inning and opened its season with a 13-5 win over South Rowan on Tuesday.

Lyndsey Gay had three hits and scored three runs for West, while Brittany Harkey and Hillary Hampton had two hits apiece.

Emily Wallace drove in three runs, while Devon Williams and Harkey had two apiece.

  • Catawba splits baseball twin bill

MOUNT OLIVE — Catawba split a baseball doubleheader with Mount Olive on Wednesday, winning 7-3 and losing 10-9.

Josh Jordan’s two RBIs and the pitching of Matt Fairweather and Chris Abernathy sparked the Indians (7-5) in the first game.

Matt Smith and Curt Motsinger had two hits apiece in the second-game loss.

It was not a nice day to be taken out to the ballgame. Official attendance was listed at 11 for the opener and 14 for the nightcap.

  • Cycle for Reynolds, honor for Snyder

On Tuesday, Catawba junior Blair Reynolds become only the second Catawba player to hit for the cycle as the Indians hammered Belmont Abbey 23-15 .

“Red” Richardson is the only Catawba player to have been credited with hitting for the cycle. He accomplished the feat in 1948.

Reynolds, the SAC Position Player of the Week, singled in the second, doubled in the fourth, homered in the fifth and tripled in the sixth. He drove in six.

Catawba’s Zach Snyder was named pitcher of the week for two wins and 11 scoreless innings.

  • Catawba softball sweeps twin bill

Catawba swept a softball doubleheader from visiting Wheeling Jesuit on Tuesday afternoon at Whitley Field.

The Indians (6-3-1) won 4-0 and 4-2 .

Liz Corbett tripled home two runs in the first game, while Jackie Carson connected for a two-run homer in the fifth. It was the first homer for Catawba since Jennifer Pittman homered on April 18, 1999.

Catawba pitcher Katie Phelps allowed just one hit, while striking out eight.

Megan Wilson pitched the second game for the Indians and scattered eight hits.

  • Pfeiffer wins golf tourney by 10 shots

Pfeiffer won its sixth golf tournament in seven tries, posting a 10-shot victory in the Pine Needles/Pfeiffer Invitational.

Pfeiffer’s Andrew McArthur shot 68-69-137 and won medalist honors in a playoff with Guilford’s Savio Nazareth.

Pfeiffer’s Will Cannon finished sixth at 143 and Luke Poulter was eight at 144.

  • Final registration for Landis league

Final registration for the Landis Pony Baseball League (ages 6-12) will be today from 5-8 p.m. at Landis Recreation Department.

  • West Middle sweeps Jackets

West Rowan swept Corriher-Lipe in middle school basketball action on Tuesday.

The West boys, led by 11 points from Ronnie Cuthbertson and 10 rom Robert Wyrick, defeated C-L 57-9.

Wesley Turner added eight points for West, and Michael Gore led Corriher-Lipe with three.

The West girls won 44-20 behind 13 points from Rashonda Mayfield and eight from Nicole Graham.

Tanunika Imes added six for West, while Serena Smith led C-L with 10 points.

Both West teams are 11-1.

  • Knox sweeps SouthDavie teams

The Knox Middle School eighth-grade girls basketball team defeated South Davie 53-37 behind 19 points from Eric Imes.

Saybah Sammy added 17 points, and Ashley Watkins scored 15. Shankia Brown led South Davie with 14 points.

  • China Grove league registers Saturday

China Grove Youth Baseball will hold its final registration for the Cal Ripken League on Saturday at Dale’s Sporting Goods for players ages 6-12.

  • Track meeting

All parents of North Rowan or Rowan Express AAUtrack and field athletes are asked to attend a meeting at the high school Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Topics for the meeting will include hosting the North Rowan Invitational and the beginning of AAU practice.

  • Dragons fall in opener to Central

West Davidson ran into a buzzsaw on opening day of its baseball season.

Central Davidson’s Russ Story struck out 15 in a no-hitter and also went 2-for-3 from the plate with a two-run homer and two-run double.

The Green Dragons return to action Friday at Lexington.

  • Mars Hill coach turns in resignation

Mars Hill men’s basketball coach Steve Roberts has resigned his position.

Roberts coached the Lions for three seasons.

  • AAU Cardinals hold baseball tryouts

The Carolina Cardinals AAU11-under baseball team will hold tryouts Saturday, March 2.

  • Salisbury Parks tennis programs

The Salisbury Parks and Recreation Department will begin registration for its tennis programs beginning March 1.

Group and individual lessons are available for beginners, intermediate and advanced levels. All classes will be held at the City Park Tennis Complex in Salisbury.

Dates and rates vary from March through August. The annual Spring tennis tournament is scheduled for April 26- 28 and summer tennis camps will start in early June.

  • SalisburyParks softball programs

Registration continues through March 8 for Girls Coach-Pitch (ages 8 -10) and Girls Fast-Pitch (ages 11-13) softball leagues sponsored by Salisbury Parks and Recreation.

Teams play on Mondays and Thursdays (Coach-Pitch) and on Tuesdays and Fridays (Fast-Pitch).

Both leagues begin play the week of March 25 at the Salisbury Community Park and Athletic Complex.

  • March Madness

The Salisbury Parks and Recreation Department invites youth, ages 10 -15, to join in the March Madness of the NCAA Tournament.

Youth participants can complete the 2002 men’s NCAA tournament bracket on Wednesday, March 13, from 6-7 p.m. at the Salisbury Civic Center.

Winner will be determined by the most team wins in their bracket and will receive a Spalding leather basketball.

There is no charge to enter, but only one entry per youth participant will be accepted.
