Salisbury’s DanielButner has been named North Carolina’s soccer player of the year by Gatorade.
Butner, who has signed with UNCWilmington, scored 22 goals and had 41 assists this season on his way to Rowan County Player of the Year honors.
The Gatorade award is based on academics as well as athletics, and Butner’s 4.47 GPA is just as impressive as his scoring numbers.
Butner, No. 2 in state history in assists, is a finalist for national player of the year honors. That award will be announced in March.
The Falcon men’s basketball team picked the right team to face on Senior Night.
Fifth-seeded Pfeiffer rolled to a 94-82 victory over No. 12 St. Andrews (2-25) in the first round of the CVAC Tournament on Monday at Merner Gym.
Pfeiffer got 20 points from senior Tyree Harris and another 16 points from senior Terrence McCutcheon.
Rico Grier added 15 points for the Falcons, who improved to 16-11 overall and 12-8 in the CVACheading into a second-round matchup at Barton.
Pfeiffer’s golf team stands in first place, 12 strokes ahead of Catawba, after one round of the Pine Needles Invitational at Southern Pines.
Pfeiffer’s team score of 285 is one stroke better than Guilford. The final round is today.
- South Rowan girls win on penalty kicks
South Rowan won the play-in game in the Rowan County girls soccer tournament, downing East Rowan on Monday night.
The match was decided on penalty kicks.
Semifinals are tonight at North. South plays top seed West at 5 p.m.. Then North plays Salisbury at 7.
- North-East baseball today at Staton Field
The first head-to-head meeting of Rowan County baseball teams provides a major attraction right off the bat, so to speak, when touted East Rowan hosts a veteran North Rowan squad at Staton Field today at 4 p.m.
East is stacked with four returning all-county players, while North counters with sluggers Jimbo Davis and Aaron Rimer and veteran right-hander Brandon
Doby.
The East Rowan YMCA is taking registration for lifeguard classes.
Classes will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-9 p.m. from April 9-May 16.
Upon successful completion of this class, participants will receive certifications for CPR for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid and Lifeguarding. Cost for Y members is $100. It’s $140 for non-members.

The East Y is also taking registration for swimming classes.
Parent/child and 3-5-year-old swimming lessons are on Mondays and Wednesdays from March 4-27.
Youths, 6-15, have classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays from March 5-28.

- Intimidators garage sale is set for March 2
The Kannapolis Intimidators will hold their second annual Garage Sale on March 2 to raise funds for Speedway Children’s Charities.
The sale, which will include player autographs, photos, cards, uniforms will be held in conjunction with the Intimidators Fan Fest. The sale begins at 7 a.m. and Fan Fest begins at 10.

Glen Padgett, former Salisbury High head football coach, is leaving Northwest Cabarrus after guiding the Trojans to a 22-14 record in three seasons.
Padgett is heading to North Mecklenburg, where he’ll replace coach Scott Sherrill, who is taking the reins at the new Lake Norman High School.
- New RJR football coach hired
Mike Propst has been named the new head football coach at 4A Central Piedmont Conference member R.J. Reynolds.
Propst, 32, is a former coach at Watauga High and coached in S.C. last season.
Reynolds struggled to a 1-10 campaign last season under David Atkins.
- Coaches of year named in CIAA
Peggy Davis of Virginia State (women) and Luke D’Alessio of Bowie State (men) have been named CIAA basketball coaches of the year.
