Trent joins race for district court

BY JONATHAN WEAVER
SALISBURY POST

Local attorney Lucretia Trent has filed to run for the district court seat Ted Blanton is vacating.

Trent, who specializes in criminal and family law, said she felt like the time is right.

Through her experiences, “I have seen things from both sides, and Ifeel Ican see all the angles,” Trent said. “Ifeel like my life experiences give me some depth and knowledge Ithink Icould apply”on the bench.

Blanton announced earlier this month he would not seek re-election and would resume a more active part in politics.

Trent has a master’s degree in human development and learning from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and a law degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

She has been an attorney in Rowan County since 1990.

From 1991 through 1997, Trent was a staff attorney for the Rowan County Department of Social Services, serving in the child support, adult protective services and child protective services area.

From 1984 through 1987, she served as assistant director for the Family Crisis Council in Salisbury. There she did counseling and program development for the domestic violence agency.

Trent also has counseled at Hospice of Rowan and was a social worker at Nazareth Children’s Home in Rockwell.

In 1975, Trent was the first woman to become a uniformed police officer for the Salisbury Police Department.

In 2000, she served as president of the 19C District Bar.

Trent is a lifelong resident of Rowan County. She lives in Gold Hill and is a member of Gold Hill United Methodist Church.

This is Trent’s first run for a judge’s seat.

So far, her only opponent in the non-partisan election is attorney Kevin Eddinger.
