R.J. Reynolds dunks Davie 89-51

BY BRET STRELOW
SALISBURY POST

CLEMMONS — Sean Stevens needed only two 3-pointers Thursday night to set the North Carolina single season record.

Davie County coach Jim Young wasn’t surprised that Stevens only tied the mark against powerful R.J. Reynolds.

The Demons defense shut down Stevens and his War Eagles teammates, and the Reynolds offense played with extreme efficiency to knock off Davie 89-51 in the CPC semifinals at West Forsyth.

Davie, which scored 117 points in 40-point win on Tuesday, dealt with the other extreme on Thursday.

“We’ve kicked some butt this year, and we’ve got our butt kicked,”Young said. “We’ve been on both sides of it.”

The Demons (20-4) dominated from the outset, even though Stevens gave Davie(16-8) a brief 3-2 lead with a 3-pointer 67 seconds into the game.

Stevens’ make gave him 123 long-range bombs for the season, but he didn’t connect on his final seven attempts of the contest.

Stevens, who has been handcuffed by the Demons, finished with seven points on 2-for-10 shooting from the floor.

“He uses screens so well that it’s difficult to keep him from getting the ball,” Reynolds coach Howard West said. “You want to be there when he catches it because he loads it up and gets it off real quick.”

Demon guard Frank Brown did an admirable job chasing Stevens around, but his teammates weren’t slouches by any means.

Reynolds held Davie to six points in the first quarter, 19 in the first half and 33 through three periods.

The super-sized Demons led 71-33 heading into the fourth against the War Eagles, who had hit just 10 of 39 field-goal attempts up to that point.

Nemanja Kreckovic led Davie with 15 points. Dan Sullivan had 11 points and seven rebounds, and Chris Stein contributed 10 points and eight boards.

“We were playing midgets against giants,”Young said. “That’s tough in basketball.”

The War Eagle offense was hurt by the loss of point guard Micah Garner, who injured his right ankle in the game’s opening minutes.

When Garner went down, Davie trailed only 8-5. The deficit quickly grew due to 15 first-half turnovers by the War Eagles.

Reynolds capitalized, hitting 17 of 30 shots in the first half to take a 43-19 lead into the break.

Keith Foster, who had a game-high 22 points, exploded after that. He made 6 of 7 shots in the third quarter — including three thunderous dunks.

Reyshawn Terry scored 18 points and Eddie Greene added 17 for the Demons, who will take on West Forsyth in tonight’s CPC final at 7:30 p.m.

The War Eagles took a pounding on Thursday night, but they can look ahead to the the 4A playoffs, which begin next week.

“We just have to regroup,” Young said.“It’s like a good golfer. About eight seconds after your bad shot, you have to wipe it out and get ready for the next shot.”
