Sports briefs: Courtney Hill named ODAC’s top rookie

Guilford freshman Courtney Hill has been named the ODAC Women’s Basketball Rookie of the Year.

Hill, a 5-foot-7 forward, is second on the Quakers in scoring (10.7 ppg) and leads the team in rebounding (5.8) and field-goal percentage (57.3).

Hill led the Quakers in rebounding 10 times and in scoring five times, including a league-high 30 points against Virginia Wesleyan.

Hill has helped Guilford to a 21-3 record. The Quakers are ranked No. 4 in the South Region in Division III.

  • McCullough, Bulldogs fall

CHARLESTON, S.C. — Charleston Southern beat North Carolina-Asheville 77-68 on Wednesday and prevented the Bulldogs from clinching the Big South Conference title outright.

Former North Rowan star Bryan McCullough had 10 points for the Bulldogs (13-13, 10-3).

  • Rabon the most valuable lifter

Curtis Rabon won the Most Valuable Lifter award in the Salisbury YMCA Annual Bench Press Championships held on Saturday.

Twenty-five participants entered in six divisions. Five champs were crowned in the Teen division.

Theo Allen took first in the Under 150-pound class with a lift of 235 pounds. Brandon Livengood was second. In the 175 class, Steven Eldridge landed first by pressing 220 pounds. Ryan Lesley took second.

In the 200 class, Leonard Atkins won with a lift of 365. Jay Phillips was second. Jimbo Davis cleared 275 pounds to win the 225 class. In the heavyweight division, Justin McIntyre tossed up 330 pounds to win.

In the Collegiate division, Matt Agner won by lifting 405 pounds. David Everhart was second. In the Sub-masters under 200 division, Thurman Whitted won with a lift of 235 pounds.

In the over 200 class, Rabon’s lift of 560 topped Bryan Everson. In the Masters division, James Davis won with a lift of 340 pounds. Stan Osteen placed second.

In the Open division, Brandon Livengood won the 150-pound class with a lift of 150. Dwayne Earnhardt won the 181 class with a lift of 315. Phillips was second.

Chris Ashbury won the 198 class by clearing 395 pounds. Darren Pruitt won the 220 class with a lift of 310 pounds. Mike Rathbone was second. Lance Miller won the 242 class with a lift of 395 pounds. Second was Everson. Rabon was the heavyweight winner with James Davis second.

  • Knox Middle girls hoops

The Knox Middle eighth-grade girls defeated Corriher-Lipe 45-25 behind 18 points from Erica Imes.

Ashley Huffman added 16 points for Knox, and Saybah Sammy scored seven.

Serena Smith scored 13 points for Corriher-Lipe, while Kayla Hubbard and April Hodges each had six.

  • South basketball clinic

South Rowan High School will conduct a basketball clinic on Saturday. The clinic for girls and boys in grades 1-5 will be held from 8 a.m. to noon, while the session for participants in grades
6-8 will be held from 1-5 p.m.
