Sports briefs: Track club members shine

Four members of the Rowan Express Track and Field Club have qualified for the National Scholastic High School Championships on March 9-10 in Landover, Md.

North Rowan sophomores Terry Wood and Andre Tillman, who have both won national age group titles in the triple jump, will compete in that event.

West Rowan’s Sherina Steele and Mark Sturgis will also compete at the championships.

  • Helms records hole-in-one

Leonard Helms, 75, shot a 74 at Warrior Golf Club recently, which included a hole-in-one.

Helms made the shot on No. 12, a 154-yard par-three, with a 6-iron. Watching the feat were Bobby Parker, Scott Miller and Harry Hammer.

  • A.L. Brown boys topple North Iredell

MOORESVILLE — Third-seeded A.L. Brown crushed North Iredell 74-47 in a first-round boys game in the 3A North Piedmont Conference basketball tournament.

Soph Avery Patterson and veterans Brandon Thomas, Timmy Allison and Justin Robinson led the Wonders.

The Wonders will take on Mooresville at 8 p.m. on Thursday night at Statesville High.

  • Winford will run for Lenoir-Rhyne Bears

Lenoir-Rhyne has signed Mooresville football star Chris Winford, one of the area’s top running backs and a Shrine Bowl participant.

Winford ran for more than 4,500 yards in a three-year varsity career and was twice named Iredell County Offensive Player of the Year.

  • Catawba baseball loses to Anderson

ANDERSON, S.C. — Anderson beat Catawba’s baseball team 5-1 on Tuesday afternoon.

Catawba (3-3) scored its lone run in the first inning when Israel Morrow’ single scored Blair Reynolds, who had doubled.

  • Pfeiffer basketball sweeps Knights

Shannon Reid scored 21 points as Pfeiffer’s women’s basketball team (18-7, 15-5) defeated St. Andrews 83-67 on Tuesday night.

Michelle Atkins added 15 points.

Pfeiffer’s men (14-10, 11-7) rolled 82-60 over the Knights.

Antoine Wilkerson paced the Falcons with 14 points.

  • Pfeiffer baseball falls to Mars Hill

Mars Hill downed Pfeiffer’s baseball team 5-1.

Mark Schleicher had two hits for the Falcons (3-5), continuing a torrid stretch of 14-for-16.

  • Catawba women’s golf finishes fifth

HICKORY — Catawba finished fifth out of six teams at the Carter Intercollegiate Women’s Golf Tournament held at Oliver’s Landing.

Kristen Kyle led the Lady Indians, finishing third with a two-round total of 165.
